1915 Australian Expedtionnary Force colourfully illustrated PPC, addressed but not postally used. Most attractive. 1915 (Apr 14) cover to Private Ralph Summers of the 1st Infantry Brigade based at Mena Camp Cairo, mss “Recd 10/5/16” in red ink, however by this time the brigade had departed for Gallipoli where Pte Summers was killed in action on May 2 1915 reflected in the manuscript marking “Missing” signed “A R Dignam Capt” and boxed handstamp ‘UNABLE TO TRACE/RETURN TO SENDER’, subsequently backstamped on return ‘RETD LETTER SECTION/15MY16/BASE RECORDS MELB’ and returned to sender in Woollahra. [Private Summers is buried at 6 Lone Pine Cemetry, Gallipoli. Captain Arthur Reginald Dignam was court-martialled at Gallipoli on 27th July 1915, just prior to the Lone Pine assault, for being drunk on duty. He was found guilty, dismissed and returned to Australia. In 1917 he re-joined the AIF as a private in the 54th Battalion, and ended the war as a sergeant in the 53rd.]
