Welcome to Phoenix Auctions Auction No.38 This is our third Auction for 2015. We are holding this one on Saturday, as we usually do. On Friday 29th May we will also be holding another Boxlot auction. An excellent place to aquire those smaller collections and miscellaneous lots. Please note the early starting time of 9:30am due to the number of lots this auction. The auction is divided into three sessions and we will not start a session before the advertised time. Session 1 starts at 9:30 am. This section is devoted to ‘Rest of the World A-Z’ and through to the end of the Australian Colonies. There is strength in British Commonwealth material which has a number of collections and specialised items. Canada and GB are both strong with some rare and difficult items. There is another selection of Las Bela sheets and part sheets. The Australian Colonies has a good representation of lots, including some rare early WA covers and Revenues. Session 2 will commence no earlier than 12:30am and contains some Australian general collections, Kangaroos and KGV Sidefaces. There is a good group of the ever-popular State/Roo combination covers as well as Imprints, Monograms, varieties and a nice range of CTOs and Specimens. In the KGV section there is a fine selection of expertised 1d red shades and another selection of the popular 1½d Die I Cracked Clichés and other varieties. Session 3 will commence no earlier than 2:30pm and comprises the rest of Australia and the Australian Territories. There are varieties and a wide range of stamps on cover showing various usages. The booklets section is stronger than normal and there are some rare Stationery items being offered. The postal history and military sections is quite solid and this time we have introduced a section for military concession mail for British servicemen serving in Australia. The Territories section has a couple of early Cocos items and a wide range of New Guinea and Papua, including a number of difficult items. As you can see there is something for almost everyone in this auction. Viewing for this Auction. Saturday Monday Wednesday Friday Saturday

My Auction 38 Bidsheet. As mentioned earlier My Auction Bidsheet is the most important part of the website when you have placed bids in the auction, because it provides everything you need to manage your bidding. With this screen you can change your bids, add limits to ensure you don’t overspend, enter Credit Card details or other special instructions. And it always shows you the current status of your bids. The lot is highlighted when you have the top bid so it is easy to see the current situation with your bids. As well as being able to modify your bids there is a +5% button which increases your bid to 5% above the current starting price. At the bottom of this webpage there is also a field to globally increase all your bids by any percentage amount. Very useful when your bids are all way below the starting price or you want to give yourself that extra level of safety. The website is there to help you get the most when dealing with Phoenix Auctions. We hope you take a little time to use it to your advantage. Remember that we are always happy to help if you have a problem or questions.
Terms and Conditions: These are found on the rear of your printed bidsheet and on the Phoenix website. At this auction Buyer’s commission is 19.25%

How to Get the Most from Our Catalogue These notes are offered as a guide to understanding the information given as symbols. 1.
Firstly, we have the lot number. Most lots have at least one illustration in the catalogue and on our website many will have multiple illustrations.
2.
The second column contains a symbol, which represents the item(s) in the lot: ** Mint, unmounted o.g. * Mint, mounted o.g. V Used, Very fine. F Used, Fine G Used, Good H Used, Heavy U Used, quality unspecified W D Unused, no gum Piece * Cover, card or S Stamp (“Postmarks” lots) PS Postal Stationery B Booklets or Booklet Panes
3.
The 3rd column contains the general description of the lot and should be self-evident with one exception. When a catalogue value is extrapolated the value is followed by a ↕, e.g. $2000↕. Typical extrapolations are 40% of the catalogue value for hinged mint when the catalogue only provides values for MUH, 200% for MUH when the catalogue value is for mint hinged. The following notes apply specifically to postmark description. Whenever possible postmarks will be described in full, except that the top portion of a postmark is only spelt out when it differs from the post office name or requires some clarification. Bracketed shaded text within a description indicates that these characters cannot be read, while greyed characters are hard to read or are only partly present, as is the case when part of the postmark is on the edge of a stamp. Very large or small letters are represented by large and small fonts respectively; small fonts are particularly used to indicate the presence of small nylon wheels in the datestamp. The following example illustrates these points: '[POST] OFFICE/21DE86/GARAH'. After the forscription of the postmark we will indicate the overall quality of the cancel with a bracketed 2 character code. The first character is A-D where A is a fine clear postmark through to D which is barely legible. The second character is a number from 1 to 4 where 1 is complete including all the frame through to 4 where only 25% or less of the cancel is visible. For exceptional strikes we will further qualify the quality code with a ‘+’ and for items which are light etc the code will be qualified with a ‘-’. For postmark lots the condition of the postmark is the most important aspect of our descriptions. Minor defects in the stamp or cover are mentioned only when the value of the item is significant. Naturally, major defects will always be described.
4.
The symbols in the second column, and the illustrations of lots, form part of the lot description.
5.
The last column is the estimate. The reserve is almost always 75% of the estimate and bids below the reserve will not usually be considered.
6.
No GST is added to the hammer price. The vendors have accepted responsibility for any tax payable.
7.
We use the following standardised abbreviations: o.g. original gum opt(d) overprint(ed) d/s datestamp cds circular datestamp h/s handstamp mss manuscript; handwritten ERD earliest recorded date LRD latest recorded date o/o opened-out RLabel registration label M/S(s) miniature sheet(s) PPC picture postcard impt imprint mtd mounted provl provisional wmk watermark LDL large dateline (postmarks) SDL small dateline (postmarks) TLC,TRC,LLC,LRC Top Left Cnr, Top Right Cnr, Lower Left Cnr, Lower Right Cnr

1868 First Royal Visit (10 Feb) use of Government House, Sydney, envelope (embossed on flap), addressed in hand of H.R.H. Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, second son of Victoria and Albert, to Richard Hengist Horne (nom de plume of poet, Richard Henry Horne), warden of Blue Mountain Goldfield, Trentham, Victoria, bearing Diadem 6d tied by Sydney duplex. Horne had celebrated with a cantata, Galatea Secunda, the arrival in the Colonies of the Prince. An endorsement, “From Prince Alfred”, possibly in Horne’s hand, appears on reverse of cover. Four weeks after this item was posted, during this first Royal Visit to the Colonies, and whilst attending a picnic at Clontarf, the Prince was shot at close range, the bullet entering about two inches to right of his spine. A team of six nurses, trained by Florence Nightingale, attended upon the Prince, who recovered from the incident within a fortnight. This was Australia’s first conventional assassination attempt. Accompanying are photocopies of biographies and photographs of the Prince, and Horne, and reproduction of cabinet photo of Prince late in life, signed and with handwritten details. [Aside from the importance of this item historically, and its particular desirability to Royal Visit specialists, there is considerable philatelic significance attached. Prince Alfred was one of the early philatelists in the Royal Family; he was elected honorary president of The Philatelic Society, London, in 1890. This is believed to have inspired his nephew, George, later King George V, who benefited from the sale by Alfred of his collection to his brother, the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). This merging of collections gave birth to the Royal Philatelic Collection.]

1859 cover from Serpentine to Kettering England with 6d black (cut-square with 2 good margins and the others just touching), 6d cancelled with a poor strike the old Mandurah Void Grid, a nice black undated oval ‘POST OFFICE/[crown]/(“13 7 59”)/ MANDURAH/WESTERN AUSTRALIA’ handstamp on face, there is an unfortunate wax stain in the centre of the address.
