1935 Australia-New Zealand (May 15) flight which developed engine trouble with most of the circa 28,000 covers carried being jettisoned. This is one of the approximately 1,000 surviving covers, which was sent by sea and backstamped with Wellington ‘23MY35’ datestamp, Cat $175. Airmail Society of NZ expertising handstamp on reverse; also a prepared return flight cover sent by sea when Southern Cross failed to arrive with attractive multiple franking including Silver Jubilee set. (2) 1940 (Jan 22) KNILM Bali Crash survivor (AAMC #888) which originated in Mass, US, on Dec 29 1939, intended for TransAtlantic route but showing handstamped ‘Insufficiently Prepaid For/Trans-Atlantic Air Mail Service’, and sent westbound, meeting up with ill fated KNILM service departing Batavia Jan 21 1940 for Sydney, very fine strike of handstruck ‘RECOVERED FROM/LOST FLYING BOAT’, trauma consistant with misadventure.
