1937 Unissued KEVIII 2d Scarlet P13½x14, BW #174E(2), single from the top left corner of the block of 6, originally owned by Lord Vestey, A wonderful exhibition item and one of the great rarities in Australian philately. Reserved at $150,000. [In honour of the Governor of Victoria Lord Huntingfield's visit to the The Note Printing Branch of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia on September 29th 1936 he was presented with a sheet of the new KEVIII stamps, which he had witnessed the production of, as a momento. Following the abdication of KEVIII on November 16th the PMG's Department advised that the stamps were not to be issued, and that all materials relating to the printing including stamps, dies and equipment were to be destroyed. This advice prompted John Ash to write to the Governor asking for the return of the sheet he had been presented with. Huntingfield returned the sheet, less six stamps, which had been sent to England as a gift to his friend Lord Vestey, advising that he was doubtful that he would be able to retrieve the missing stamps. This is acknowledged by Ash in a subsequent letter. This lot includes photocopies of original correspondence between the two parties] Note: Of the remaining five units the vendor has advised that a block of 4 will be bestowed to an institution with the vendor retaining the remaining single. $150,000
