1½d Red Die II scarce Plate 1a Mullett imprint pair part BW #91(1a)za (cat $1,000 as block of 4), the imprint with very distinctive damaged ‘A’ of ‘AUSTRALIAN’ and position 1aL60 with right frame compartment marks, later state, without the further deterioration of the imprint and other BSAP-listed features. [See Lot 439] 1½d Red Die II scarce Plate 1a Mullett imprint pair part BW #91(1a)za (cat $1,000 as block of 4), the imprint with very distinctive damaged ‘A’ of ‘AUSTRALIAN’ and position 1aL60 with right frame compartment marks, later state, with further deterioration of the imprint and appearance of other BSAP-listed features. [See Lot 438] 1½d Red Die II two contiguous blocks of four each 2*/2** [2L2-3,8-9,13-14,19-20], several containing BSAP-listed minor varieties (mostly 2nd states). More importantly, each block illustrates two indented roughly parallel line inking flaws running top to bottom slightly at an angle through posns 2-3, 8-9, 14 and 20 plus another less pronounced single line with similar profile at right in posn 9. Very noticeable from the back and would appear to have been caused by some foreign matter (threads of some sort) on the printing plates. Striking blocks. (8)

1922 Herald Weekly Times 1d red-purple KGV pair carried on Herald and Weekly Times experimental air mail flight Melbourne to Geelong, bearing alongside the indigo Herald Air Mail etiquette, mandatory addition for articles flown on the event, the whole cancelled on arrival (17 Apr 1922) by Geelong machine cancel. Paying regular 2d Letter rate for surface mail from Geelong to destination, minor blemishes, unusually fine for this iconic item. Outstanding for either first flight or KGV 1d usage collection.

1929 Perth-Adelaide group of scarce S. Mitchell processed covers carried on intermediary flights, comprising AdelaideKalgoorlie, Adelaide-Forrest, Ceduna-Forrest, and Kalgoorlie-Forrest, signed Pilot N. Brearley, AAMC #137a. (4) 1930-31 Sydney-Brisbane first flights, comprising 1930 A.N.A. and 1931 New England Airways events, AAMC #148 and #224 (98 carried). (2) 1930 Daly Waters - Camooweal three folded and pilot-signed (FNeale) envelopes inscribed for intermediaries to Camooweal (from Newcastle Waters, Anthonys Lagoon and Brunette Downs) each addressed Adram Ersle in Perth and franked 1929 3d Airmail and 9d Roo SM wmk (cat $180 on cover), one additionally with KGV 4½d SM wmk P14. All stamps tied by Camooweal cds, two on Feb 21, one Feb 23; no backstamps but the pilot signature almost certainly shows they were among the 30 recorded as having been carried on these sectors. PLUS a long registered envelope inscribed as being for the first Camooweal - Daly Waters service but not in fact carried until July 30! (4)

1930 Dave Smith ‘City of Sydney’ Crash Cover. On 24th March Dave Smith & Wally Shiers departed Sydney for England. After a forced landing in WA, they resumed their flight on 28th April. They landed safely in Singapore & then crash landed in the jungle near Bangkok, where the flight was abandoned. This cover was posted in Bangkok with a note from Dave Smith on the back apologising for not being able to deliver the mail in England. AAMC #156b and notes that no mail is known from this flight, making this the only recorded cover from this flight. Pictures of the plane and reports on Dave Smith included. An essential item for collectors of this fascinating period of Aerophilately.

1931 Kingsford Smith Melbourne - Sydney set of 3 Kingsford Smith & 3d Airmail on large illustrated cover. 1933 2nd Mackay Aerial Survey 2d red KGV & 3d Air cancelled with ‘OODNADATTA/25JE33/S.A.’, poor ‘ROY HILL/ 21JE35/W.A.’ on face. A total of 26 covers carried, only 4 of which were cancelled at Roy Hill, this one is addressed to England. A map of the survey flights and small biography of Donald Mackay are included. 1933 Currie - Melbourne 2d KGV & 6d brown KSmith ‘OS’ on registered air cover to Ashfield, odd small tone spots. Only 30 covers carried. 1934 (April 10-14) Australia-NZ-Australia “boomerang” AAMC #371 with astonishing franking of KGV OS overprinted ½d x2, 1d, 2d (appears SM wmk) and 3d with latter cat $1,200 on cover (a prominent collector states that he has only seen this stamp on about 6 covers of any description). The return franked NZ KGV 9d with ‘OFFICIAL’ opt SG #O104 (cat from £190 on cover). Philatelic in spades but likely to be unique. 1936 Brisbane - Adelaide Air Race signed by “John WF Collins”, AAMC #664, who won the Speed Section. Only 18 covers flown. Some biographical notes included.

Undated Berlin censor label reseal probably applied in Kiel before being forwarded to Red Cross in Copenhagen where held till reposted ‘3.2.19’. [Comes with copy of ‘Forces Postal History’ Article No. 2666 by K Humphreys published June 1995 and which provides much detail about mail carried on the S.S. MATUNGA including specific reference to this cover.]
