T h e U niversity! So he h ad passed beyond th e ch a lle n g e of the sentries who h a d stood as guardians of his boyhood and h ad sought to k eep h im am ong th e m th a t he m ight b e su bject to th e m and serve th eir ends. Pride a fte r satisfactio n u p lifte d h im lik e long slow w aves. T he end he had b e e n born to serve y e t did n o t see h ad le d h im to escape b y an unseen path: and now it b eckoned to h im once m ore and a new adventure was about to b e opened to h im . It seem ed to h im th a t he h eard notes of fitful m usic leap in g upwards a to n e, and downwards a d im in ish ed fourth, upwards a to n e , and downwards a m ajo r th ird , lik e trip le -b ra n c h in g flam es leap in g fitfu lly fla m e a fte r fla m e , out of a m idnight w ood. It was an e lfin prelude, endless and form less; and as it grew w ild er and faster, th e flam es lea p in g out of tim e , he seem ed to h e a r from under th e boughs and grasses w ild creatu res ra c in g , th e ir fe e t p atterin g lik e ra in upon th e leav es. T h eir fe e t passed in p atterin g tu m u lt over his m in d , the fe e t of hares and rabbits, th e fe e t of harts and hinds and antelopes, u n til he h eard th e m no m ore and re m e m b e red only a proud c ad en ce from N ew m an: "Whose fe e t are as th e fe e t of h arts and u n d ern eath th e ev erlastin g a rm s." M aybe these old cartoons refer to my childhood and not to his (T he ogres in th em w ear M ussolini's fa c e ), so th a t w hen m ice are swallowed by skeletons or em pty suits of arm or, when a trib e of savage N egro m ice is put through a w ringer and stacked fla t in the c e lla r, he can tak e th e objective and c ritic a l view , w hile I a m shaken to see the giant picassoid parents eatin g and voiding th e ir little m ice tim e and again. And w hen the cheery announcer cries, "W ell, kids, th a t's the end, " m y son gets up o b e 足 d ie n tly and runs outside to pla.y. I hope he w ill ride over this world as w ell, and th a t his crudest and most terrifying dream s w ill not return w ith such wide p u b licity.
