P.C.D.S. CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY The 20th Anniversary year of PCDS was inaugurated at the 1981 Arizona Dinner Meeting of the Newcomen Society in North America. The evening’s festivities were co-sponsored by PCDS and the Newco men Society an organization with the purpose of studying and publi cizing business and institutional history and achievement. Guests included PCDS parents, alumni, trustees, faculty, and Phoenix busi ness leaders. The Reverend Mr. James C. Roof, former Dean of Faculty at PCDS gave the invocation. The guest of Honor and Speak er for the evening was Dr. Joel Monell,

Mrs. Peter S. Firestone and Mrs. John I. Yellott.

Mrs. Peter Wray was also present at the 20th Anni versary Dinner. Speakers for the evening were: Dr. Joel Monell, Mr. John I YU lott, and Mr. Charles Penrose.

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON PETER S. FIRESTONE UPPER SCHOOL COMPLEX At a special meeting of the Business and Finance as well as the Buildings and Grounds Committees held last June, unanimous approval was given to begin construction on the Peter S. Firestone Upper School Complex. The Upper School complex will contain eight classrooms, a lecture hall, two art rooms, the Douglas A. Bean Mathematics and Computer Center, a conference room, and faculty offices. These will be housed in four seperate wings, all facing a central quadrangle. Construction is scheduled to be completed in the spring. Occupancy is slated for September, 1982. There will be two memorial plaques prominently located in the complex. One will list all donors to the Peter S. Firestone Memorial Fund. The other will name individuals and foundations having made donations of $25,000 or more for the construction of the complex.

HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE

To The Class of 1982: The 1981-1982 school year marks the 20th Anniversary of Phoenix Country Day School. In September, the school was honored by the Newcomen Society of North America for its accom plishments during the past twenty years. These accomplishments have been significant — a growth rate from 93-470 students, grade expansion from 3-9 to our present K-12, and the many new facilities necessary to house this increasing population. More important than these favorable statistics, however, are those who made them possible. As students, your contributions have been vital to our success. Some of you have been here for thirteen years, others for only one or two. Just as growth and change play a key role in P.C.D.S. accomplishments, so do tradition and stability. Regardless of the length of your time with us, I’m sure you have all benefited from P.C.D.S.’s traditional emphasis on the five basic academic disciplines, small classes, personal attention, and excellent teaching. These qualities have not changed in twenty years and will continue to characterize the school in the future. If past experiences of P.C.D.S. graduates are any guide, they will stand you in good stead throughout your careers. Each of you will leave with a strong sense of the P.C.D.S. Community. Though you will graduate without occupying the new Peter S. Firestone Memorial Upper School complex, I hope that you will come back and see it next year. And in the next twenty years, I hope you will become active members of our alumni group. It is, after all, the combined effects of the continuity and change that have made our history worthy of celebration. Good Luck!

Joel C. Monell Headmaster

CARNIVAL 81’ The school grounds were crowded with families enjoying eating cotton candy, popcorn, and other “ fair” food, while playing electronic games, testing their strength on the High Striker, and trying their skill on cork gun alley. Baseball pitching hopefuls enjoyed the sponge throw and the dunking booth. Such P.C.D.S. celebrities as Dr. Moneli, Dr. Adank, George Baker, Chuck Toll, and Dave Raymond paid the price after every direct hit. Younger children frequented the Mash Tent, Space Walk, sandpainting booth, and pony rides. For the more adventurous, the Hot Air Balloon ride was a favortie. Inside Burch Hail, parents could buy items at the Gourmet Booth, Used book sale, the Boutique, and the plant sale,

THE UPPER SCHOOL

P.C.D.S. WELCOMES NEW UPPER SCHOOL DEAN Mr. Chuck Toll

The excitement my family and I have felt about PCDS began during a typical New England spring mud season as we anticipated our western move. It grew during a summer trek which, though it contained no tornadoes or buffalo stampedes, still amply justified the trucking company’s slogan, “ Adventure in Moving” . Since our arrival the excitement has only increased: meeting new colleagues, whose friendliness has made easier the separation from good friends and family; working with lively students and their interested, involved parents; learning about the schools background and contemplating its future. Despite several eastern acquaintances” sotto voce muttering about the rigors of southwestern life, we have found the region’s temperature swings, dust storms, floods, and other exotic features stimulating. We have also begun to explore the state’s rich historical and prehistorical legacy. It’s great to be here!

Within Within the field, bright and gold, I will hear your old story told. Within the churchyard I stand within, I will forget all our sin. And deep in the night, deep in my sleep, My memories will seep back in. And when I walk in the deep forest, Though you will be far in my past I will still recall and call for you. And I will reach out to you, My dearest, dear friend We are together forever in each ones mind. We promise this to each other. -by Karen Bean

If you can balance dreams with practicality And deal infacts, but never lose ideals, If you can face the harshness of reality, And find the truths that prejudice conceals; If you can be courageous when defeated And humble in the face of victory, Or give your best until a task’s completed, However difficult that task may be; If you can temper facts wth understanding And seek to gently guide, not to control, And neither be too lax nor too demanding, But keep in mind the worth of every soul.

SOLITUDE To wander off along some tinkling rill And lie in grass beside the daffodil, Or sprawling in the clover, where the bee Hums on his round of ceaseless revelry, To gaze off into depths of summer blue Where not a single cloud floats on the view, To track the forest when the billowy breeze Flows outward over bending tops of trees, While shadowy clouds like noiseless couriers run To catch the glory of the setting sun, To gaze down on some rock-bound mountain pool Whose placid bosom seems as pure and cool And deep as Heaven above it: and whose share, Which immemerial ages have pass’d o’er, Remains untrodden still, as when at first From out the dark abysm of the earth it burst, Seeming that God to Earth an eye had given Wherewith to gaze forever into Heaven, While all things round about it sit and brood In death-like silence;-This is Solitude. Finally, to PCDS I leave too much money, fond memories, and many more benedictions that could not be expressed in a whole yearbook, let alone 250 lousy words; those who f love, you know who you are, and those who I hate, you know who you are. (May a large and uncomfortable object be inserted into some inconvenient portion of your anatomy) If you infer that I did not have an entirely good time at PCDS, you’re right, but that’s life, and that’s herd instinct.
