“ . . . that which we are, we are, One equal temper of heroic hearts, Make weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.” from “U L Y SSE S” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE

DR. JOEL C. MONELL

To The Class of 1985 This book will serve as a constant reminder of the variety of experiences you have had at Phoenix Country Day School. It is an important milestone in your life cycle. Treasure it. Mr. Schweikher, the College Counselor, has called your class “ambitious, adventur ous, and flexible” in terms of its college applications. I trust that these qualities along with those of intellectual curiosity and perseverance have been nurtured at P.C.D.S. and will remain with you throughout your lives. Rollo May said that “the most effective way to ensure the value of the future is to confront the present courageously and constructively.” I think you have done this and I wish you the best in whatever future you pursue. Sincerely,

Headmaster

OVERALL RECORD 9-3-1 The Varsity association football team recent ly concluded it’s season, compiling an overall record of 10 victories, 3 defeats, and 1 draw. Defending it’s State Championship title from last year, the team finished with a record of 8 wins and 2 defeats in the league, giving it sec ond place in the league and a place against Judson in the championship final. The final proved to be a close and exciting game which ended in a 3-2 victory and a second State Championship in two years for the PCDS team. Chuck Bain was the team ’s leading scor er, and valuable performances were turned in by Seniors Peter Cove, John Snead, John Morey, Henry Sargent, Robert Portnoy, and John Marcarelli who was the M VP in the final. The championship was a great way for the Sen iors to finish their soccer careers at PCDS, and though they will be missed next season, its reas suring to see the talent o f this year’s 9th, 10th, and 11th graders, which will be so valuable to next year’s team. Congratulations!

This year’s Senate was probably the most active Sen-;, ate P.C.D.S. had had m a whi le This .was due to ihe addition of an extra representative from each class, much work on their.part, and a general!} move active student body. Events such as the ski trip and others got students involved in fun and excitement while things like sponsoring a deprived child and a community service group gave the Senate a chance to give others some help. In material terms, the Senate provided the Upper School with many new items, and did its best to do the most lor the school in general. David Rigberg President
