Head's Message
It has been with pride and pleasure that I have observed increasing interest and responsibility assumed by students and faculty of PCDS for the environment, local and universal. Man made and natural disasters, either current or potential, belong to all residents of earth and must be solved by cooperative efforts. Every effort made, no matter how small they may seem like recycling cans or paper, can and do make a major difference when combined with similar acts worldwide. We must continue to conserve and protect the environment for our future and that of genera足 tions to come. Bravo for the growing role of PCDS on this important issue.
Margaret J. Madden

"What is REAL?" Asked the Rabbit one day..."Does it happen all at once, or bit by bit?" "It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a lone time. That's why it doesn't happen to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once your Real you can't be ugly, except to those who don't understand."-The Velveteen Rabbit

LEADERSHIP Leadership is an important part of PCDS. Junior leaders meet once a week to learn how to be a leader, trust each other as well as others, talk to each other about problems, and much more. These meetings are the training a junior must go through in order to become a Senior leader. Senior leaders go and help out on the freshman and seventh grade trips.

World Issues
The World Issues Club meets every other Monday after school. At these meetings we discuss issues such as animal rights, the environment, and human rights. We also raise money through bake sales and other fundraisers and give the profits to charity.
One of the jobs of the World Issues Club is to empty the recycling bins around campus. Above, Rebecca Chornenky is taking care of that job.
At the World Issues bake sale, sixty-five dollars was raised and donated to a charity. To the left are Julie Levenberg, Rebecca Chornenky, and Anne Salzmann selling; while Yen Tran waits to buy a doughnut.

The Apple Macintosh Advantage. Macintosh computers are used at nearly all grade-levels at Phoenix Country Day School. By getting a Macintosh computer for home, you will be able to write papers, learn Spanish, and even do your Calculus homework right in the convenience of your own home. Long hours after school in the computer room would become a thing of the past. Macintosh computers are the preferred choice in many fine universities. Whether you are trying to get through English, Math, or Science class, the Macintosh is the ideal computer. All over the world, more people than ever are buying Apple® Macintosh® computers. And with good reason: Macintosh is one of the most graphically intuitive, most understandable personal computers ever invented. Macintosh computers are easy to set up and easy to learn. They come with system software installed, so all you do is plug in your Macintosh computer and turn it on. And Apple makes it easy to expand your system as your needs grow— with scanners, hard disk drives, modems, displays, and printers. Applications for the Macintosh all work in essentially the same way, too. They’re intuitive, consistent, and designed to let you spend more time working and less time figuring out how your computer works.
Apple Macintosh PowerBook Computers The Apple® Macintosh® PowerBook™ computers give you Macintosh power with notebook convenience. PowerBook computers are fully compatible Macintosh computers, so they let you run virtually all Macintosh software. And with a program like SoftPC from Insignia Solutions, they’ll let you run MS-DOS software. These fully compatible computers are not just the lightest, smallest, Macintosh computers ever. They’re also the freedom to work with the power of Macintosh anywhere you want, any time you want. • Add 6.7% sales tax.

After months of hard work the Mock Trial Teams of PCDS went to the Maricopa County Supe足 rior courthouse to engage in seven and a half hours of grueling competition. Phoenix Country Day School became the talk of the courthouse as both teams won their way into the finals after just one year of involvement. In the end Team A took third place in the region and Team B walked away with a fourth place award; putting both teams in the state competition. Congratulations Mock T rial! The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat. Men's Varsity Basketball went on quite a ride this season, with an overall record of 19 and 6. As with every other sports team, the Eagles had their ups and downs, and a heartbreaking loss in the last game of the quarter finals of the state tournament. But the season was not a total loss. It ended with a great record and a continued love for the game.
Varsity Basketball: Coach Hendrickson discusses strategy as Matthew Weinberg, Ryan Hart, Carlos Armenta, Gideon Rubin, and Frazier Bain listen carefully.
U.S. Jazz Band: (back row) Valeska French, Mukesh Vidyasager, Erin Loback, Sarah Burnham, Hollye Schumacher, Ariel Levy (middle row) Adam Schwartz, Rusty Silverstein, Tony Koppula, Carlos Armenta, Ken Allison, Anne Allison, Jeff Gimbel, Zach Thomas, Konrad Lee (front) Patrick Koppula
This year due to several conflicts, the Upper School Jazz Ensemble had to work especially hard. Practices were twice a week and met at 7:00am before school. What was the incentive? This year the Jazz Ensemble will be competing at a National Festival in New Orleans. The festival will be in late April and Phoenix Coun足 try Day will be competing with several schools from around the country. Best of Luck! 189

YearDooK ivy j jit's surprizing, but we finally made it! With all the Tuesdays, Thursdays and espe足 cially SATURDAYS, we mostly met our deadlines. Since last spring, we had to choose everything from editors to the theme. Where are we, where are we going? that's what we tried to express throughout this book. It took a long time and even more work, but only a few really made the difference."Yes, we have a staff of 50..well 25..well actually only the few and the brave have survived!"
Frazier and Nicolle-the senior copy connection-we had lots of laughs Iver captions but you always helped finish off the endless copy. Ellen and Liz-the layout ladies-I know it was hard to switch to the Macs but you made it a success and showed your dedication. Vicki-photographer extrodinaire-It was definitly a struggle, but you lere a great and so were your last minute pictures. Kiran-you helped take us over the top in Ads money and were there jven with all your conflicts. Mark- You weren't an editor but you should have been. Your Ichuberance and dedication were greatly appreciated. All the pictures, all fie Ads! What would we have done without you? Ariel-You took charge and lead your group, good work. Deadline Specialists who I am also very greatful to: Matt Rankin, stacey Piccinati, Yen Tran, Trista Eaden, Sarah Michet, Jessi Greene,Erin Jill, Anne Allison, Jake Weiner...and special thanks to Whitney Pozgay. And last but hardly least-Dr. Cags and Mrs. Zink. Without the two of lou, the yearbook would not have existed. I can't thank you enough!
