but most importantly, you have become our friend.

We thank you for the humor and friendship you have brought to our school.

Trees speak. When there is wind, they have motion and sound. They have always been metaphors for human beings. Like people, they have roots. Like families, they have branches. Perhaps that is why wood always seems more alive than the other materials we use in our homes. Photo by Kristin Altraann

My small farmhouse in Maine is made of wood. The town records show that the whole town met there in 1820 to celebrate its completion. That's because they probably all pitched in to build it. Carpenters who worked on sailing ships cut the small wave patterns that line the stairs. They carefully shaved walnut curves in the bannisters that go up to the second floor rooms where you can see the wooden pegs that still hold the old beams together. The rooms have doors which are less than an inch thick, yet very heavy, made of hardwood panels crafted to expand and contract with the seasons without changing the perfect trueness of the whole door. This is a lost art from the days of sailing ships, as any door built this thin now would warp. The house at night makes creaky noises when the wind blows, like an old ship at sea. Outside the front door is a giant silver maple whose branches spread across the front of the house, giving shade in summer. It was planted for that purpose. Now its size speaks to years of service. Many the Nor'easter roaring in from the Grand Banks has stretched its limbs, but still the tree stands. In the summer, the evening breeze whispers in all the leaves. What is the message here in wood both living and used since forty years before the Civil War? Or even more, from Redwoods standing since the time of Julius Caesar? No message at all if there is no time to stop and listen, no message at all for those who do not care for the history of each place or for the moment of mystery that someone else stood where we stand and wondered what we wonder.

We, the senior class of 1996, dedicate this yearbook to

Mr. Swingler. You have been an inspiration to our class as a whole, not only in the classroom, but also to each of us individually. Your sense of humor has kept us awake through many a physics class, and your wealth of knowledge reaches so far beyond. Thanks for years of fun and dedication!

We'll Always Remember You!

T he H ea d s of S chool L o w er S ch o o l In Lower School a seed is planted. With loving care and nurture the seed sprouts. | A tree is bom. In Lower School our goal is to provide a firm basis for each seedling student. Solid roots are formed in a rich environment and spread out in all directions. The tiny tree gathers strength arid confidence to grow upward and branch outward in Middle School.

—Alexandra McKinley

M

id d l e

S ch o o l

In Middle School the main trunk of knowledge and skills is developed upon the solid foundation established in the Lower School. This trunk with its many branches needs to be united, firm and strong, in order for the smaller branches and leaves to develop. The Middle School provides the growing students the information, concepts, selfconfidence and study skills needed for their branching out into the Upper s c h o o l.

_;J o h n C r a b b MB

U pper S chool The Upper School becomes the branches that grow out in all directions, eventually producing beautiful leaves that fall away and are nurtured a mari usque ad mare by the winds of college challenges and future successes. -D exter Morse

—Courtney Smalley, Editor-in-Chief To the PCDS Community: The Phoenician is a student-run publication produced entirely by students with the assistance of a faculty advisor. The staff of the Phoenician is composed of enthusiastic and dedicated students who are willing to make a significant effort towards producing a high-quality yearbook. The year book is an extracurricular activity which often meets several times per week and on weekends. The time and energy put in by these students is truly commendable. The editors, staff, and advisor have made every effort to check for spelling mistakes, omissions, and photographic errors. Despite our efforts, we apologize for any errors which may have gone unnoticed. We hope that you enjoy this year's yearbook and appreciate the generous dedication of our students. —Ms. Howard, Faculty Advisor
