Welcome Dear PCDS Friends: We are pleased to share the Phoenix Country Day School Annual Report on Philanthropy, highlighting the School’s fundraising achievements in the 2015-2016 fiscal year. Like all colleges, universities, and independent schools around the nation, PCDS relies on private donations from alumni, parents, and friends in order to provide a first-rate educational experience for our students, and to increase our national ranking among the country’s best independent schools. In this report you’ll see how fundraising went last year, as well as the impressive— and lengthy!—list of donors to the three areas of giving at PCDS: • The Annual Fund • The THRIVE Campaign • The Tax Credit Program You will also gain an understanding, we hope, of the various avenues through which donors give to PCDS, and the ways that these gifts truly impact our students and faculty. We are proud beyond measure to have such a generous community of parents, alumni, former parents, faculty and staff, and friends, whose support enables PCDS to be the #1 school in Arizona, and one of the best in the nation. Our vision is strong, and philanthropy is the catalyst to turn vision into reality. To all of you, we extend our deepest thanks.

THIS PUBLICATION REFLECTS THE 2015-2016 FISCAL YEAR (JULY 1, 2015-JUNE 30, 2016). 3

Annual Fund The Annual Fund provides vital resources that bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Phoenix Country Day School education. Similar to other independent schools, PCDS relies on gifts to the Annual Fund to maintain our standards of excellence.

PARTICIPATION IS IMPORTANT Why? A community that has a high participation rate in the Annual Fund, regardless of the dollars raised, is one where community is strong. Participation is important for our national rankings and it indicates that our community is pulling in the same direction. It also helps us secure outside funding.

Tax Credit Arizona taxpayers can decide where their taxes go: to the Arizona state general fund or to PCDS students with financial need. Thanks to the generosity of individuals and corporations, PCDS has been able to award hundreds of scholarships to our most deserving and highest-need students.

2015 TAX YEAR CREDIT RESULTS

$670,335

ARIZONA INDIVIDUALS Total Contributions from 426 Donors

$1,897,334

ARIZONA CORPORATIONS Total Contributions from 9 Corporate Donors

HOW IT WORKS There are two Arizona Private School Tax Credit Programs that help fund PCDS Financial Scholarships. Individual Program: • Redirect a portion of personal Arizona tax liability to a Student Tuition Organization in support of the PCDS financial aid program. • Participants, in turn, receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit against their Arizona income taxes. • There is a maximum amount: $2,173 (married filing jointly) and $1,087 (individuals). Corporate Program: • Any Arizona “C” or “S” Corporation can redirect their corporate tax obligation to a private school of their choice (PCDS) to help fund need-based scholarships. • Corporations, in turn, receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit against their AZ income taxes. • No maximum contribution amount – just a minimum of $5,000 per company.

Nearly 1 in 4 students at PCDS receives a need-based financial aid scholarship.

Each year, PCDS provides over 150 scholarships.

PCDS supports each scholarship recipient’s entire PCDS career.

Your tax credit makes a real difference in our students’ lives—THANK YOU! Learn more at www.pcds.org/taxcredit

Yellot Faculty Grant The Yellott Faculty Grant, which was created to honor the memory of John I. Yellott (Headmaster from 1966-1972), has a direct impact on our faculty, students, and alumni. The grant is awarded each year to faculty members for the purpose of completing research or projects that benefit the PCDS community through enhancing teaching and student engagement. In 2015-2016, one of the Yellott grants enabled Upper School history teacher Dave Martin to create a new seminar course on global terrorism, which was then broadened to become a three-part lecture series for alumni. Other Gifts PLANNED GIVING

GIFTS IN KIND

By making a planned gift, donors can leave a legacy, whether through a tax-advantaged life income gift or through a bequest.

In-kind donations are a way to give to PCDS through providing needed goods and services. Throughout the school year, many events are underwritten, equipment donated, and speaker fees waived as in-kind gifts to PCDS.

“ Having attended PCDS from 2nd through 12th grade, I made friends during the 1960’s and 1970’s who are still in my life. And if it wasn’t for Mr. Chet Seroka inspiring my interest in geology, I wouldn’t have become a geologist or met my husband, Tom, who is also a geologist! PCDS holds a special place in my heart, and my husband and I are pleased to have PCDS as a beneficiary of our trust.” Dorian Elder Kuper, Class of 1973

MATCHING GIFTS Many companies offer matching gift programs to encourage employees to contribute to charitable organizations. Most of these programs match contributions dollar for dollar, and some will even double or triple the amount of your gift. “ Our family happily donates to the Annual Fund, and by taking advantage of the matching gifts program at Tim’s company, we are able to double our contribution and have twice the impact on the school.” Stacy, Tim, Sophia (‘18), and Zoe (‘19) Casten

“ We are thrilled that by donating the services of our company, we can give to PCDS in a way that fosters and supports the entire PCDS community.” Kristin, Steve, Caden (‘19), and Cloe (‘22) Short, Atlasta Catering

GIFTS OF SECURITIES/STOCK Gifts of stock and other securities are a popular way to give to PCDS. Gifts of securities include not only publicly traded stocks, but gifts of mutual funds, Treasury bills and notes, corporate and municipal bonds, and stock in non-publicly held companies. It’s easy to give stocks and other marketable securities.

IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER Individuals who are 70.5 and older are able to make a tax-free gift (up to $100,000) from their individual retirement account (IRA) directly to PCDS without subject to income taxes on the distribution. Many PCDS grandparents and former parents consider this option.
