Whilst we’ve been enjoying the heat wave, the hot days in the Phoenix office have reminded us that there’s nothing better than an air-conditioned screen, an ice cream and a quality film! This month we’re proud to be celebrating the 90th birthday of Lord Richard Attenborough, hosting a season of six films from his distinguished body of work. From his breakthrough acting role in Brighton Rock to his directorial triumph Gandhi, the season has been co‑curated by his son Michael Attenborough, who will also be hosting an exclusive talk on his father’s life and career. Meanwhile our Stage on Screen events are proving extremely popular, and will continue into autumn with plenty more opera, drama and Shakespeare – including a live performance in November of Richard II starring David Tennant. Our regular film programme continues a pace with Only God Forgives, Elysium and Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa all hitting our screens on their national release dates. The fun isn’t over for kids either with Studio Ghibli’s charmingly-animated From Up On Poppy Hill and family comedy Smurfs 2.

Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright reunite for this sci-fi comedy, the final part of their ‘Cornetto Trilogy’ (the others being Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz). 40-year-old Gary King gathers his childhood friends together to reattempt the legendary pub crawl round their hometown they failed in their youth. But all is not well in the sleepy town and the friends soon find themselves battling an alien invasion. It’s inventive, exciting and uproariously funny!

Using sci-fi as a backdrop this new film from internationallyacclaimed artist Shezad Dawood, contests fixed notions of race, migration and identity. Two youths land in a spaceship. Their mission is to re-establish contact with ‘The Glorious 100' – sent to earth millennia ago in human form to study and observe the development of another race. But many of their kind have become corrupted, forgetting their original purpose and slowly becoming influenced by their adopted home.

Directed by Goro Miyazaki from a screenplay by his father – the legendary Hayao Miyazaki.

This superbly-acted Saudi Arabian film is reminiscent of 2012’s The Kid with a Bike, by turns charming and unexpectedly moving. Wadjda is a rebellious girl obsessed with buying a bicycle so she can beat local boy Abdullah in a race, but her mother is more concerned with persuading Wadjda’s father not to take another wife. In a country vilified for its attitude to women’s rights, that the film was made by a female director is a towering achievement.

Discovering they can use the internet to find celebrity’s homes, and gossip-websites to know when they will be empty, the gang begin a spree of robberies. Beautifully shot and caustically funny.

Blackfish

A mesmerising documentary thriller, Blackfish focuses on the notorious Tilikum – a 6-ton captive Killer Whale responsible for the deaths of three people since 1983, including a top Orca trainer in 2010. Exploring Tilikum’s capture and history of aggressive behaviour, Director Cowperthwaite intercuts shocking footage of previous incidents with testimonies from numerous ex-trainers – some convinced that places like SeaWorld can do good, others visibly shaken by the guilt of exploiting beautiful creatures for entertainment.

Growing up with Richard Attenborough

A talk by Michael Attenborough CBE Sat 17 Aug, 2pm Tickets: £5 Michael Attenborough will give a unique personal insight into Richard’s film career in a one-off talk at Phoenix. His talk will provide a fascinating and entertaining view behind the scenes of the films featured in our season. Michael is a theatre director whose career includes directorial positions at London’s Almeida Theatre, the Young Vic and the RSC. He was appointed CBE in 2013 for services to the theatre.

To celebrate Lord Richard Attenborough’s 90th birthday this month, Phoenix will be hosting a season of six of his finest films, as well as a talk by his son – theatre director Michael Attenborough CBE. Richard Attenborough is one of British cinema’s most important figures: an actor, director and lifelong patron of the arts who spent the early years of his life in Leicester. In a film career which began in 1942, Richard won two Academy Awards for Gandhi, as well as four BAFTA Awards and three Golden Globe Awards. We are delighted that Michael Attenborough has helped us choose the films and will be giving us a personal insight into his father’s life and career.

Working across a range of media, Benedict Drew explores our relationship with technology, creating fantastical worlds that are both mesmerising and unsettling.
