A WALK IN THE WOODS
Film-wise, our brochure is literally packed to the seams this month! Amidst 38 individual movies, a highlight is 45 years – a film certain to put Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay in early contention for a BAFTA or Oscar come awards time. Our Orson Welles Season celebrates a titan of cinema – a man who worked both as an actor and director - a century after his birth. It’s a great chance for film lovers to catch some of his rarer works, now digitally restored. Short film making is where many established film makers cut their teeth, and something we’re keen to support at Phoenix. The Short Cinema festival - now in its ninth year - is an exciting showcase of short films created by emerging filmmakers in the East Midlands. We’ve two exhibitions touring from the Institute of Contemporary Arts, both using a mix of archival materials and newly commissioned artworks to explore little known histories. Shout Out! investigates the 1980s tower block pirate radio movement, while Whose Gaze is it Anyway? looks at Arab popular culture and alternative cinema. And finally, if you’re looking for things to do with children over the holidays, we’ve everything from great value films like Disney’s Inside Out and free drop-in creative workshops, to 5-day filmmaking summercamps.
Phoenix is a registered charity, number 701078. Our aim is to bring inspirational film and art to all. Made possible with the support of:
FIND PHOENIX
This month we’re bringing film customers a little extra sparkle as we replace our projector in Screen 1 with a brand new 4K digital model. It’s a significant investment made possible in large part by your continued support. As a result, you’ll be able to enjoy sharper image quality and – because we’re upgrading our audio system as well – crisper, more immersive, surround sound.

Rohrwacher’s coming of age tale follows a family of beekeepers in the sleepy Italian countryside. 12-yearold Gelsomina follows the daily routine of country life but a chance encounter with a glamorous TV host offers an opportunity to ensure the future of her family farm. Filmed on Super 16 film stock, The Wonders is a magical hymn to a fading way of life and the gentle collision of childhood with adolescence.
Sebastião Salgado’s staggering life is the focus of this documentary, tracing the photographer’s work that has left an indelible impression on how we view humanity and our impact on the planet. From the struggles of those afflicted by the 1980s famine in Africa to the beautiful, untouched nature our planet still manages to harbour, Salgado’s life has been dedicated to documenting these horrors and wonders.

PRECINCT SEVEN FIVE
15
Fri 14 – Thu 20 Aug Dir: Tiller Russell Cast: Michael Dowd, Kenny Eurell USA 2014, 1hr 44mins An unbelievable true story that’s as gripping as any thriller; interviewees in Russell’s new documentary seem like gangsters from a Scorsese flick, but they’re all cops. But unsettling forces lurk within the old family home and Kylie’s stay descends into blood-soaked terror.

MISTRESS AMERICA
15
Fri 21 - Thu 27 Aug Dir: Noah Baumbach Cast: Greta Gerwig USA 2015, 1hr 24mins
After the broader comedy of While We're Young, Baumbach returns to his indie stylings of Frances Ha with this wonderful comedy drama starring regular collaborator Greta Gerwig. Tracy, a lonely college freshman in New York, is rescued from her solitude by her soon-to-be
stepsister, Brooke, an adventurous gal about town who entangles her in alluringly mad schemes. Mistress America is a comedy about dreamchasing, score-settling, makeshift families, and cat-stealing.
Adam Scott (Parks and Rec) and Taylor Schilling star as Alex and Emily, recently moved to LA. Chatting with another parent in the local park, the couple are invited over for dinner. Initially expecting an early night the dinner turns to drinks, and more drinks, and soon it’s more of an ‘adult’ evening than they were expecting! Funny and daring, this new indie comedy is a short and snappy breath of fresh air.

A wholly incompetent police officer, Captain Van der Weyden, and his equally inept partner are assigned to investigate, but find their paths crossing with Quinquin, the town’s young troublemaker. An unapologetically absurd and surreal mix that brings to mind Lynch’s Twin Peaks - Dumont has crafted one of the art-house cinema highlights of the year.
GOING CLEAR: SCIENTOLOGY AND THE PRISON OF BELIEF 15
SONG OF THE SEA
Despite pressure to withdraw it from distribution, Gibney’s investigation into Scientology is finally here. Ever since its origins in the work of 1950s science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, the Church of Scientology has gone from strength to strength, gaining notoriety for its controversial beliefs and connections with Hollywood A-listers. This eyeopening documentary examines the unsettling inner-workings of this 20th century religion.
An enchanting animation based on the Celtic legend of the ‘Selkies’ magical beings that live as humans on land and seals underwater. Following a startling discovery, Saoirse and her brother Ben embark on an adventure to save Ireland’s faerie creatures. Like no animation you'll have seen before on the big screen, Song of the Sea deserves to be ranked with the best of Pixar and Studio Ghibli.

WHOSE GAZE IS IT ANYWAY? Thu 27 Aug – Thu 24 Sep Cube gallery, Free The exhibition looks at the history of Arab pop culture through printed materials, film and video. Its inspiration began with the archive of Abboudi Bou Jaoudeh – a prolific collector whose underground treasure trove in Beirut holds a vast collection of Arab film memorabilia, from rare film posters to cultural magazines published from the 1930s to the present day. Film posters from the archive will be displayed in the Cube Gallery, alongside a newly commissioned work by Sophia Al-Maria.
Pirate radio is often associated with the off-shore broadcasting of the 1960s, but in the early 1980s it enjoyed a renaissance. This time, stations were broadcasting music from the roofs of tower blocks rather than at sea, and in a further shift the movement distinctively celebrated black culture.

FILM: AROUND THE PINK HOUSE 12A
Sun 30 Aug, 3.20pm Dir: Joana Hadjithomas & Khalil Joreige Lebanon 1999, 1hr 32mins One of the most popular Lebanese films of the late 1990s, Around the Pink House is a comedy-drama that explores the changing urban landscape of Beirut after the Civil War.
Frequently portrayed in reductive and exotic ways in mainstream cinema, representations of the Arab World often offer little insight into the region. This course will provide an introduction to a number of Arab filmmakers that regularly blur the lines between the personal and the political.
These exhibitions form part of ICA Touring
