We’ve plenty to delight children and young people at Phoenix over the summer holidays. If you want to put a smile on young faces (or just sit in a darkened cinema for a couple of hours!), take a peek at our family films on page 12. Topping the bill we've Pixar’s new blockbuster Brave, with feisty flame-haired Princess Merida battling a beastly curse. Or Ice Age 4: Continental Drift - with hapless Manny, Diego and Sid setting sail on an iceberg! And based on the Dr Seuss book, The Lorax is a charming tale of a young boy’s quest to win a girl’s affections. We asked you to vote in July for your favourite Pixar films and we’ll be showing the final choice over the first two weekends of August. See page 12 for full details. For young people interested in games, video, sound and all things digital, we’re introducing our new digital art summer school – five days brimming with technology and creativity. More details on the family page. There’s also the Phoenix Café Bar, where families are always welcome. With a children’s menu, colouring-in sheets, free cordials, lots of space for buggies, and baby change facilities on site – it’s the ideal home away from home! Hope to see you soon.

King of Devil's Island 15 (Kongen av Bastøy) • subtitled Fri 3 – Thu 9 Aug Dir: Marius Holst Actors: Stellan Skarsgård Norway 2012, 1hrs 56mins Stellan Skarsgård stars in this award-winning drama from Norway. When young sailor Erling is shipped off to Bastoy – an island prison for teenage criminals – he soon clashes with the island’s brutal regime. Determined to escape, Erling rails against the guards and inspires the other boys to rebel against tyrannical boss Bestyreren (Skarsgård) - but how far are they willing to go? Based on actual events, this is a film of intelligence, power and fury - with stunning performances all round.

Continued from last month Wed 1 – Thu 2 Aug

The Women on the 6th Floor 12A (Les Femmes du 6éme étage) France 2010, 1hr 46mins Jean-Louis (Fabrice Luchini) discovers a joie de vivre he never knew he had thanks to his Spanish maids in this charming French farce.

Two Years at Sea U UK 2011, 1hr 28mins Ben Rivers’ stunning documentary is a beautiful portrait of eccentricity as it follows an old man living alone in the Scottish wilderness.

The Apartment PG USA 1960, 2hrs 5mins Billy Wilder’s masterpiece arrives at Phoenix looking better than ever in a sparkling new restoration.

Fri 3 Aug - Thu 9 Aug

Dir: Lynn Shelton Actors: Mark Duplass, Emily Blunt USA 2011, 1hr 30mins

Dir: Todd Solondz Actors: Jordan Gelber, Selma Blair USA 2011, 1hr 26mins

A hit at the Sundance Festival, this charming indie film has surprised everyone with its wit and humour. When Jack’s brother dies, he takes the advice of his friend Iris and retreats to her family’s cabin to grieve alone. Iris’ older sister Hannah is also staying in the cabin, however, and after a bottle of Tequila the inevitable happens – only for Iris to turn up the next morning! So much better than it sounds, this is a wonderful, hilarious and utterly lovely film.

Indie provocateur Todd Solondz returns with another unflinching portrait of the perennial outsider. Abe is thirty, lives with his parents, has a menial job in his father’s real estate company and is determined to get married, to prove he is not the failure everyone takes him for. As astute and uncomfortable as we would expect from a Solondz film, Dark Horse is nevertheless a funny and surprisingly touching story of a man on the fringes of society and his own family.

Killer Joe 18 Fri 10 – Thu 16 Aug Dir: William Friedkin Actors: Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch USA 2011, 1hr 42mins Anyone who thinks William Friedkin, legendary director of The French Connection and The Exorcist, has lost one ounce of his brilliance and intensity would do well to watch Killer Joe. Matthew McConaughey gives a revelatory performance as the eponymous Joe Cooper,

a crooked Dallas cop and part-time hitman hired by a drug dealer to murder his hated low-life mother for the insurance money.

Dir: Jean Dujardin Actors: Gilles Lellouche France 2012, 1hr 47mins The Artist’s Jean Dujardin writes, directs and stars in this very raunchy film that was a box-office smash in France. Dujardin and some of France’s hottest directing talent (including The Artist’s Michel Hazanavicius) unite for these nine short films about infidelity. From philandering husbands to clueless misogynists, motel escorts to inevitable “medical” problems, the results are hysterical, sexy, vulgar and very French!

A brutal, claustrophobic and darkly comic film that will haunt you long after the credits roll.

Documentary Dir: James Moore, William Spicer UK / USA 2011, 1hr 21mins Tom Spicer is a massive fan of legendary heavy metal band Metallica, and dreams of one day meeting his hero, drummer Lars Ulrich. Tom also has Fragile X Syndrome, a form of autism that makes everyday life a constant challenge. When Tom's brother and sister, Will and Kate, resolve to make his dream come true, they decide to chronicle their journey. The result is a remarkably moving and tender documentary that won't leave a dry eye in the house.

Dir: Ann Hui Actors: Andy Lau, Deannie Yip Hong Kong 2011, 1hr 58mins Tao has cooked and cleaned for film producer Roger and his family for 60 years. When she suffers a stroke she demands to be put in a nursing home rather than become a burden to the young man she helped raise. A tender and understated story about lifelong friendships, and the passing of responsibilities from the old to the young. With terrific performances from Deannie Yip and Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau, this is smart and involving world cinema.

Scientists discover a recurring star-map pattern in cave paintings that may lead to answers about the origins of mankind. Arriving on a distant moon they discover a huge subterranean structure with cylinders of dark liquid – then all hell breaks loose! Expect breathless tension as the crew fight for their lives, and a creepy performance from Michael Fassbender as the android David.

Dir: Bouli Lanners Actors: Paul Bartel, Marthe Keller Belgium 2011, 1hr 23mins This sublime coming-of-age tale follows the adventures of brothers Seth and Zak and their new friend Danny across the course of one summer in the fields and streams of rural Luxembourg. The 3 leads are superb – believable, heartbreaking and hilarious - and the film casts a wonderful spell of nostalgia for childhoods spent playing in the gloaming. The beautiful score from Belgian folkster The Bony King of Nowhere fits perfectly.

Dir: Mark Andrews Actors: Billy Connolly, Julie Walters USA 2012, 1hr 40mins From the makers of Up and the Toy Story trilogy comes this fantastic animated tale for the whole family. Set in the wilds of Scotland, it follows feisty princess Merida who refuses to act like the demure lady her mother desires, and throws herself into adventures with witches, will o’ the wisps and bears! With a wonderful voice-cast including Julie Walters, Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson, Pixar have done it again. A heartfelt, beautiful and exhilarating film.

The Forgiveness of Blood TBC • subtitled Fri 17 – Thu 23 Aug

Teenager Nik is forced to stay indoors and Marston expertly builds the tension as cabin fever sets in.

Mon 20 – Thu 23 Aug

• subtitled Mon 27 – Thu 30 Aug

Dir: Tony Kaye Actors: Adrien Brody USA 2011, 1hr 37mins Adrian Brody stars as Henry, an emotionally numb substitute teacher in Tony Kaye’s (American History X) take on the American school system. Henry prefers the brief time he spends with classes as no sentimental attachments with the students can develop. His inherent apathy hits a stumbling block, however, when he is assigned to a school with a particularly dysfunctional family. Full of Kaye’s visual flair, with a superb and understated performance from Brody.

The Hunter 15 Fri 24 – Thu 30 Aug Dir: Daniel Nettheim Actors: Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill Australia 2011, 1hr 41mins Daniel Nettheim’s award-winning debut feature stars Willem Dafoe as Martin David - a former soldier turned professional hunter recruited by an unscrupulous biotech company to hunt down and kill the Thylacine, the supposedlyextinct 'Tasmanian tiger'. Lodging with eco-warrior Lucy, Martin’s mission raises the ire of sceptic locals, but all is not what it seems in the midst of the Tasmanian forest. Beautifully shot, this is a gripping yarn with a sensational performance from Dafoe.

Dir: Reha Erdem Actors: Sermet Yesil, Türkü Tura Turkey / Bulgaria 2010, 2hr 2mins Turkish director Erdem’s new film is a treat for lovers of art-house and challenging world cinema. Arriving in a remote village, a stranger gains a reputation as a miracle worker after saving a boy from drowning. Adopting the name “Kosmos”, the stranger begins a peculiar relationship with the sister of the boy he saved. Is he a saviour? And how will the village react when one of his miracles fails? Bold, brilliant and bizarre - this is one-of-a-kind cinema.

Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap 15 Fri 24 – Mon 27 Aug Documentary Dir: Ice-T, Andy Baybutt UK / USA 2012, 1hr 51mins Rap superstar turned director Ice-T traces the roots of Rap from its street poetry beginnings to the multi-billion dollar entertainment machine it is today. The film brings together such hip-hop royalty as Chuck D, Afrika Bambaataa, Eminem, Nas, and Snoop Dogg (many of whom freestyle to the camera) to tell the story of the people, beats, rhymes and passion of this musical phenomena.
