January is traditionally a busy month at Phoenix, when we screen some of the favourites for the Oscars and Baftas – and other major film awards - taking place this month and next. We’ve shown some strong contenders already – Argo, The Master, Untouchable and Beasts of the Southern Wild among them – and this month, quite possibly, we’ve saved the best ‘til last. Les Misérables is garnering five star reviews, and it looks like Kings Speech director Tom Hooper might have another Oscar winner on his hands. Other potential nominees we’re showing in January include The Impossible, The Hunt and Life of Pi 3D. If you’d like to watch more quality films in 2013 – and you’re not already a Phoenix regular – why not give us a try this month and start the year as you mean to go on. As an independent cinema, we programme more of the sort of films which win awards – not just in January – but all year long! As a little encouragement, we’re offering everyone who buys a cinema ticket in January the chance to win one of three ‘Phoenix Golden Tickets’ – giving you free admission to any film at Phoenix for a whole year! (see p13) Of course, we don’t just show films. You can also eat and drink before or after your film in the Phoenix Café Bar – and this month we’ll have a menu full of Les Misérablesinspired French dishes from 11th - 31st January. Great film, great food. See you soon! Front cover image: Les Misérables (see page 5)

The arrival of Jean (Smith) - Reg’s diva ex-wife and the fourth member of the quartet - throws a spanner in the works. Jean and Reg haven’t spoken in

Happy Happy Wed 2 – Thu 3 Jan Norway 2010, 1hr 25mins, 15 Funny and charming film from Norway, as housewife Kaja decides she deserves more excitement and romance in her life than her inattentive husband can provide.

Seven Psychopaths Wed 2 – Thu 3 Jan UK 2012, 1hr 50mins, 15 Martin McDonagh’s hilarious follow-up to In Bruges is a very funny and very violent crime-caper with a great ensemble cast.

Fri 4 - Mon 7 Jan

Dir: Ang lee Actors: Suraj Sharama, Irrfan Khan USA 2012, 2hrs 6mins

Dir: Barnaby Southcombe Actors: Charlotte Rampling, Gabriel Byrne UK / Germany 2012, 1hr 33mins

Based on Yann Martel’s Man Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name, this new film from Ang Lee (director Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) is a visually stunning work, sure to be in the mix this awards season. Recounting his life story to a Canadian writer, Indian-born Pi describes a shipwreck – a tragic incident that left him adrift in a lifeboat with a full-grown Bengal Tiger. It’s a tale of courage and determination, and a beautiful film.

This home-grown twist on film noir is told from the point of view of the femme fatale. Charlotte Rampling is excellent as Anna – a lonely middle-aged divorcee going to singles nights – who finds herself a chief suspect in a murder. Assigned to investigate is jaded cop Bernie Reid (Byrne making great use of his ruffled charm), who becomes fascinated by the enigmatic Anna. Intense and layered, it keeps you guessing right up to the final reel.

Les Misérables 12A Fri 11 – Thu 31 Jan Dir: Tom Hooper Actors: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe UK 2013, 2hrs 38mins Tom Hooper (Director The King’s Speech) has taken on one of the most successful musicals of all time with staggering results. Greeted with standing ovations at test screenings in the US, Les Misérables features an all-star cast, all singing live. Set in revolutionary France, it tells the story of escaped convict Jean Valjean and his quest

for redemption whilst being tracked by police inspector Javert. Emerging as a strong Oscar favourite, this is THE film to see in January.

Mon 7 - Thu 10 Jan

Fri 11 Jan, 6.30pm

Dir: Collin Trevorrow Actors: Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass USA 2012, 1hr 26mins

Dir: Eugene Jarecki Documentary Netherlands / UK 2012, 1hr 48mins

Charming indie film from the producers of Little Miss Sunshine. Investigating a classified ad for a time-travel partner, a magazine writer and his interns encounter Kenneth, a loveable eccentric who believes he has built his own time-machine. Darius (Plaza) replies to the ad, and as they begin a ramshackle training regime, Darius finds herself falling for the hopeless Kenneth. Funny, effortlessly enjoyable and with a great turn from mumblecore darling Duplass.

Described as ‘a gut punch of a documentary’, this superb film won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and will no doubt pick up a lot more before the awards season is over. A scathing indictment of America’s war on drugs, this is a smart and powerful film that sidesteps theatrics in favour of damning statistics. Most fascinating are the huge range of interviewees including incarcerated criminals, judges, politicians and a furious David Simon – writer of The Wire.

Sat 5 - Sun 6 Jan Dir: Genndy Tartakovsky Actors: Adam Sandler, Kevin James USA 2012, 1hr 31mins To provide a safe haven for his daughter Mavis, Dracula has created Hotel Transylvania – a place for monsters to come and relax. Unfortunately, young backpacker Jonathan stumbles across the hotel and falls for Mavis. Now it’s up to the Count to keep Jonathan hidden as the monstrous guests are terrified of humans! As you would expect from the director of Dexter’s Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls and Samurai Jack, this is beautifully animated and very funny.

The 6.30pm screening on Wed 16 Jan will be followed by a Q&A with local filmmaker Kenton Hall who features in the film, hosted by Nigel Powlson the Leicester Mercury's Culture Editor.

The Hunt 15 (Jagten) • subtitled Fri 18 - Thu 24 Jan Dir: Thomas Vinterberg Actors: Mads Milkkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen Denmark 2012, 1hr 55mins Thomas Vinterberg (Festen) returns with this superb drama that has picked up multiple awards on the festival circuit including Best Actor at Cannes for Mikkelsen. Lucas (Mikkelsen) is a beloved teacher at a small primary school and a respected member of the

town, but all this falls apart after an accusation from one of his pupils turns the community ferociously against him. Outstanding performances all round; this is world cinema at its best.

Fri 18 – Mon 21 Jan

Dir: Scott Leberecht Actors: Shawn-Caulin Young, Tracey Walter USA 2011, 1hr 28mins After all the swooning of the Twilight series, Midnight Son arrives to inject some muchneeded violence and horror to the Vampire genre. Anaemic loner Jacob suffers from an extreme photosensitivity disorder that forces him to work security night shifts and spend the daylight hours buried away in his basement apartment. As his condition worsens, it begins to manifest in explosive violent episodes and an unquenchable thirst – he has to have blood, and it has to be human.

Dir: Ursula Meier Actors: Kacey Mottet Klein, Lea Seydoux Switzerland 2012, 1hr 37mins Simon lives with his older sister Louise in a housing estate in Switzerland. Louise is jobless, so Simon steals ski-wear from the luxury resort in the mountains above their home. Partnering with a crooked seasonal worker, Simon finds himself over his head with the line between right and wrong becoming blurred as family secrets are revealed. This affecting drama picked up the Silver Bear at the Berlinale and looks beautiful thanks to cinematography from Agnes Godard (Beau Travail).

Dir: David Ayer Actors: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña USA 2012, 1hr 48mins Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña star as two LAPD cops in David Ayer’s (Harsh Times) thrilling movie. During a routine traffic stop, the two partners confiscate firearms and money, little realising they belong to a notorious Mexican cartel. Now marked for death, the officers must stay alive long enough to get to the cartel before the cartel’s troops get to them. Tense, action-packed and exciting; End of Watch will start your year with a bang.

The Impossible 12A Fri 25 - Thu 31 Jan Dir: Juan Antonio Bayona Actors: Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor Spain 2012, 1h 53mins Bayona’s powerful film arrives in the UK full of awards season buzz. Holidaying in Thailand, Henry and Maria and their three children look forward to relaxing for a few days. Instead, a devastating tidal wave separates them and leaves the family searching for each other in the decimated remains of

the island. Based on the real-life experiences of a Spanish family during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, this is a heart-rending film with superb performances from McGregor and Watts.

False Trail 15

Mon 21 – Thu 24 Jan

(Jägarna 2) • subtitled Fri 25 – Thu 31 Jan

Sat 19 - Sun 20 Jan

Dir: P.J. Hogan Actors: Liev Schreiber, Toni Collette Australia 2012, 1hr 56mins

Dir: Kjell Sundvall Actors: Rolf Lassgård, Peter Stormare Sweden 2011, 2hrs 7mins

When the wife of a philandering local mayor suffers a breakdown, the mayor panics – who’s going to look after his family of five girls? Enter new nanny Shaz (Colette), a crazy free-spirit who sets out to restore some family pride – and what better way to do that than by getting into a fight with the school bullies or forcing the girls to climb a mountain in pyjamas? This is raucous good fun from the director of Muriel’s Wedding.

The popularity of Nordic noir continues with this cracking film from Sweden. Rolf Lassgård (Wallander) plays Erik Bäckström - a dogged Stockholm cop assigned to a homicide case in his old stomping ground of a small rural town. His methodical approach clashes with violent local detective Torsten (Stormare). A sequel to 1996’s Jägarna, False Trail works perfectly well as a stand-alone slick thriller, and it’s nice to see Stormare with a role he can get his teeth into.

Dir: Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath Actors: Chris Rock, Brian Cranston USA 2012, 1hr 33mins Everyone’s favourite escaped menagerie returns in 3D! Still trying to get back to New York, Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Gloria the Hippo and Melman the Giraffe wash up in Europe where they’re pursued by ruthless animal control officer Dubois (Frances McDormand). Hiding out in a circus they must pass themselves off as an acrobatic troupe or risk the wrath of Vitaly – a jaded Russian Tiger. Slick, well written and very funny entertainment for all.

Lincoln

The Sessions

Peter Jackson returns with the first instalment of his three-part Hobbit adaptation. Martin Freeman stars as Bilbo Baggins, enlisted by a band of dwarves to join them on their quest to retrieve treasure stolen from them by the dragon Smaug.

Daniel Day-Lewis stars in Spielberg’s stirring historical epic. Already tipped as the favourite for Best Actor Oscar, Day-Lewis is superb as Lincoln - struggling to hold the country and his own cabinet together as Civil War rages.

Ben Lewin’s wonderful awardwinning comedy stars John Hawkes as a man in an iron lung – desperate to lose his virginity, he contacts a professional sex surrogate with the help of his priest (a hilarious William H Macy).

FROM THE VAULTS CINEMA BIZARRE We introduce a new element to our programme this month with ‘From the Vaults’ a monthly screening of a forgotten masterpiece, a new digital restoration, or simply a fantastic film we think everyone should see!

Another addition to our programme – a late night screening of the weird and wonderful. From cult films to pulp-horrors, avant garde curios to whacked-out trippy westerns; we’re going to show the lot!

Lawrence of Arabia PG

Freaks – 35mm 15

(All new digital restoration) Sat 26 - Sun 27 Jan

Fri 4 Jan, 9.30pm

Dir: David Lean Actors: Peter O’Toole, Alec Guinness UK / USA 1962, 3hrs 47mins (includes intermission)

Dir: Tod Browning Actors: Wallace Ford, Leila Hyams USA 1932, 1hr 4mins

We begin with David Lean’s masterpiece Lawrence of Arabia. This reconstruction began in 1988, and after extensive digital restoration work it arrives as a fully restored 227 minute director’s cut. Starring Peter O'Toole as young, idealistic officer T.E Lawrence, assigned to the camp of Prince Feisal, where he carries out a series of daring raids against the Turks.

We start with Tod Browning’s controversial 1932 film Freaks, on 35mm. Causing a sensation on its release, and banned in the UK for 30 years, Browning’s cautionary tale of a dishonest trapeze artist who seduces a side-show midget to get to his money still has the power to shock and unsettle 80 years later.

We follow with a chance to see some of Ray’s fantastic creations in action with the digital restoration of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, which sees our hero fighting a fearsome skeleton, the Cyclops, the Roc and other monsters in order to cure a shrunken princess and prevent a war!
