COMING IN AUGUST
45 YEARS
There’s a music theme to our headline movies, with two of the best soundtracks this year: the stunning documentary Amy brings the tortured story of singer Amy Winehouse to the big screen, while The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson is the focus of biopic Love and Mercy. If gritty drama’s more your thing, we’re screening western thriller Slow West, starring Michael Fassbender, and Southpaw – look out for Jake Gyllenhaal’s spectacular transformation into a heavyweight boxer. Our Stage on Screen summer season is packed with theatrical and operatic gems, including Everyman from NT Live starring BAFTA winner Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), and ENO’s exciting production of The Pirates of Penzance, directed by Palme D’Or winner and five-times Oscar nominee Mike Leigh – sure to be a major event. We’ve a fresh summer menu in our Café Bar including great value kids’ choices, or you can bring a packed lunch for the little ones and soak up the sun (fingers crossed!) in our garden area. School holidays can be expensive, but with our special family ticket deals, free kids’ activities and summer offers you can visit Phoenix without breaking the bank.
Phoenix is a registered charity, number 701078. Our aim is to bring inspirational film and art to all. Made possible with the support of:

On his travels he meets a lone drifter, Silas Selleck (Fassbender) who offers to protect and guide him; little does he know the drifter is a bounty hunter and
that Jay’s runaway sweetheart is Silas’ next target. An essential revisionist western, Slow West packs great performances, tense action and a surprisingly sardonic sense of humour into its lean 84 minute runtime.

HUSTLER’S CONVENTION
15
Mon 6 – Thu 9 Jul Dir: Dan Fogelman Cast: Al Pacino, Annette Bening USA 2015, 1hr 46mins
Fri 3 – Mon 6 Jul Dir: Mike Todd USA / UK 2015, 1hr 36mins
Based on a true story involving British folk artist Steve Tilston, Al Pacino plays ageing rock star Danny who discovers a letter containing advice from John Lennon written 40 years ago and begins to re-evaluate his life. Determined to reconnect with his adult son and grandchildren, Danny also decides to give true love a shot. Pacino hasn’t been this convincing in a long time, and the superb supporting cast includes Christopher Plummer, Bobby Carnavale and Annette Bening.
Released in 1973 by Jalaluddin Mansur – one of the original members of legendary The Last Poets – the album ‘Hustlers Convention’ laid the foundation for hip-hop and rap. Now only known to hip-hop aficionados, this documentary aims to drag the hugely influential album back into the spotlight. Featuring interviews with such rap luminaries as Chuck D, Melle Mel and KRS-One, the film blends archive footage with animated sequences set to the original album.

THE NEW GIRLFRIEND
15
Fri 10 – Thu 16 Jul Dir: François Ozon Cast: Romain Duris, France 2014, 1hr 45mins, subtitled
François Ozon’s sexually charged psychological drama follows Claire (Anaïs Demoustier) whose best friend passes away suddenly, leaving behind husband David (Romain Duris) and a newborn child. When visiting the widowed father, Claire discovers a secret of David’s that will lead them down an uncertain path. A sharp satire centred on gender, class and consumerism, The New Girlfriend cements Ozon as a leading figure of the cinema du corps movement.
AMY
HOPE AND GLORY
WEST
To mark our week run of sequel Queen and Country later in the month, we screen John Boorman’s original classic: a powerful, personal story of his memories of a wartime childhood in London. Seen through the eyes of young Billy Rohan, World War II was a glorious adventure with bombed ruins as a perfect playground, and skies filled with dogfights between the Luftwaffe and the RAF.
Berlin, 1970s: young mother Nelly and her child escape the communistrun East side of the city for a new life in the West, only to find themselves stuck in a processing centre. Housed with other refugees in dormitories where fear over Stasi informers runs rife, paranoia begins to coil around Nelly as she faces questions about the mysterious death of her scientist boyfriend three years ago. A slowburning psychological thriller with a terrific central performance from Jördis Triebel.

Fri 3 – Thu 16 Jul Dir: Asif Kapadia Cast: Amy Winehouse UK 2015, 2hrs 8mins
‘ – Stunningly moving and powerful: intimate, passionate, often shocking, and almost mesmerically absorbing.’ – The Guardian. From the director of 2010’s Senna, Kapadia’s new documentary looking at the short and tragic life of Amy Winehouse was greeted with universal acclaim at its Cannes Film Festival premiere in May. A woman of singular talent who seemed unable to adapt to the worldwide superstardom her talent brought, Amy’s story is one of determination, heartbreak and, of
course, addiction. Assembled in similar style to Senna using archive clips, photos and home movies often overlaid with Amy’s songs spelt out on screen, the film charts her early days gigging around London to the success of her 'Back to Black' album and sad death in 2011.

Fri 17 – Thu 23 Jul (excl. Tue 21) Dir: Guy Myhill Cast: Liam Walpole, Sean Harris UK 2014, 1hr 25mins
Set in rural Norfolk, Goob Taylor’s world is turned upside down when his mother starts seeing brutish stock car racing driver Gene. Feeling rejected by his mother, tensions begin to rise over a long hot summer and spark with the arrival at their beet farm of beautiful free-spirit Eva. Exploring themes of loneliness and youthful detachment, The Goob sits alongside The Selfish Giant and Catch Me Daddy in an exciting new wave of British social realism.

Sun 19 – Thu 23 (excl. Tue 21) Dir: Ian Gabriel Cast: Brendon Daniels, Jezriel Skei South Africa 2013, 1hr 59mins, subtitled (parts) Reminiscent of Amores Perros and City of God, this sprawling gangland thriller is a kinetic, bustling ball of energy. Following the intertwining lives of four people: a young boy who must choose between chess or gangs; a doctor; a cop on the trail of a serial killer; and a reformed gangleader out of prison, the film explores what it takes to survive on the mean streets of Cape Town.
12A
Fri 17 – Thu 23 Jul Dir: Bill Pohlad Cast: John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks USA 2014, 2hrs 1min Spread across two decades in the life of The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, Pohlad’s second feature shifts between Wilson’s creative peak during his 60’s heyday, and his listless existence in the 1980s under the corrupting influence of psychotherapist Dr. Eugene Landy. Wilson is brought to life by a pair of brilliant performances: Paul Dano is the whirl of creativity in the 60s, while John Cusack’s laconic charm lends pathos and sincerity to the
troubled musician’s life in the 80s. Superb support comes from Paul Giamatti and Elizabeth Banks, the latter as a Cadillac saleswoman whose relationship with Wilson offers him a chance at peace. Expect to have Beach Boys records on repeat after viewing.
QUEEN AND COUNTRY 15
Fri 24 – Thu 30 Jul Dir: John Boorman Cast: Callum Turner, David Thewlis Ireland / France / Romania 2014, 1hr 55mins John Boorman’s bittersweet and often funny new film continues the exploits of his on-screen alter ego, Billy Rohan from 1987’s Hope and Glory. Set 10 years after the Blitz, ‘Bill’ is now enlisted in the British army to begin basic training for the Korean War. Getting into hot water with his superiors thanks to his trouble-maker friend Percy, Bill also becomes distracted by a relationship with an older woman.

With a beautiful wife and daughter Billy seems to have it all, but in one tragic moment he loses everything. Starting from rock bottom, Billy must confront his own demons to take his second shot at a boxing title. Coming under the tutelage of ex-fighter ‘Tick’ Wills (a role tailor-made for Forest Whitaker),
a man with his own chequered past, perhaps Billy’s battle can offer redemption for both men. With bloody and bruising fights as well as a solid emotional punch, catch it now before the Oscar campaigns for Whitaker and Gyllenhaal begin next year.

ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: THE WILD, UNTOLD STORY OF CANNON FILMS 18
Fri 24 – Tue 28 Jul Dir: Mark Hartley Documentary USA 2014, 1hr 47mins
In the 80s Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus purchased Cannon Films, and their unconventional business plan led to the creation of a slew of notoriously bad films, including Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, Ninja III: The Domination and Over the Top. Featuring honest and downright hilarious interviews with stars and crew, this is essential viewing for lovers of naff cinema.
BREAKIN’ 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO 35mm PG
Fri 24 Jul, 9.30pm Free screening
We celebrate the release of the Cannon Films documentary with a free screening of one of their infamous movies, the hysterical sequel to Breakin’ (you really don’t have to have seen the first film to follow the plot.) Come and revel / cringe as the three main characters Kelly, Ozone and Turbo reunite to stop the bulldozing of a local community centre. Breakdance battles. Bad fashion. Worse hair. Ice T dancing: the 1980s in all their glory.
MAN UP

Mon 27 – Thu 30 Jul Dir: Ben Palmer Cast: Lake Bell, Simon Pegg UK / France 2015, 1hr 28mins Single and uninterested in the dates set up for her by friends, Nancy (Bell) travels across London to celebrate her parents’ wedding anniversary. During her journey she is stopped by Jack (Pegg), a forty-something divorcee who mistakes Nancy for his blind date. Fri 31 Jul – Mon 3 Aug Dir: Dziga Vertov Cast: Mikhail Kaufman Soviet Union 1929, 1hr 8mins
Fri 31 Jul – Thu 6 Aug Dir: Justin Simien, Adriana Serrano Cast: Tessa Thompson USA 2014, 1hr 48mins
A groundbreaking piece of experimental documentary cinema now digitally restored, Man with a Movie Camera is one of the most influential films in cinema history and was named by Sight and Sound in 2012 as the 8th best movie ever made. A poetic vision of urban life in 1920s Russia, Vertov’s extraordinary montage is narrative-free and ignores many of the conventions of silent cinema presenting a bustling city at work and at play.
This biting race relations comedy set at a privileged college won the Sundance Festival's Special Jury Award. When a rebellious student DJ decides to run for the presidency of her student hall with the intention of keeping it African-American only, her fiery campaign leads to frictions on campus. Inflammatory, brave and very funny, any film that discusses whether Gremlins is actually about the white fear of black culture is worth watching.

Kawalerowicz spent three years making what was once Poland's most expensive film, a huge widescreen epic about the struggle between Ramesses XIII (Jerzy Zelnik) and his high priests. But this is no Cecil B DeMille spectacle: co-screenwriter Tadeusz Konwicki regarded it as 'a penetrating analysis of a system of power'.
Black comedies about the Second World War were understandably thin on the ground in post-war Poland, but this incisive dissection of 'courage' and 'valour' offers a decidedly subversive take on the traditional image of Polish heroism. In the first half, a hapless incompetent becomes a Resistance hero; in the second, Polish POWs are anything but keen to escape.

ARTISTS’ BURSARIES
ART
Phoenix Interact Labs is announcing a second round of Artists’ Bursaries to help artists in Leicester or Leicestershire be creative with digital technology. If you’re an artist, designer or technologist interested in experimenting with technology in your practice, Phoenix is offering funding of up to £500, workspace and an individual programme of support to help you create innovative new work.
BOTH SIDES NOW 2 Tue 7 Jul, 6.30pm Screen 2, Free No booking required
Both Sides Now explores the connections and differences between the UK, China and Hong Kong, bringing together a series of artists’ film and video that investigates nationhood, individuality and power.
The works respond to past and recent political and cultural events, including Hong Kong’s Umbrella Revolution and the handover of Hong Kong to China. Both Sides Now is curated and produced by videoclub (UK) and Videotage (Hong Kong). Supported by Arts Council England and Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
Selected participants will have the freedom to develop their projects in the Phoenix Interact Labs space, and work with us to consider new ways of engaging the public beyond the traditional exhibition format. For more information visit the Phoenix website or contact gino.attwood@phoenix.org.uk Interact Labs Phoenix Interact Labs is a space for people to be creative with digital technology. SHOUT OUT!
UK Pirate Radio in the 1980s Thu 23 July – Mon 24 Aug Cube gallery & Café Bar, free Shout Out! is an archival exhibition looking back at the early tower block pirate radio movement that emerged in the UK during the 1980s, prompting a new musical phenomenon that would change the face of British music as we know it. Pirate radio is often associated with the off-shore broadcasting of the 1960s, but in the early 1980s it enjoyed a renaissance. This time, stations were broadcasting music from the roofs of tower blocks rather than at sea, and in a further shift the movement distinctively celebrated black culture. This exhibition forms part of ICA Touring
