We’re delighted to tell you Phoenix has never been busier. In January, we sold over 10,000 tickets, with particularly strong attendances for Oscar-nominated films including Les Misérables and Life of Pi. In February – at the time of writing – Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty are already selling well. All these high profile films have also been shown at the multiplexes, and we think it’s great so many of you chose to watch them at Phoenix, a local independent cinema. Thank you! Now it’s March, and with the Oscars and Baftas behind us, we look forward to getting back to our independent film roots to bring you a wealth of world cinema treats you won’t be able to see at the bigger cinema chains. This month, we have a bumper crop of 18 new films from 12 different countries – including the stunning No from Chile, the charming I Wish from Japan and the beautiful Lore from Germany. Many of these films have been picking up awards on the film festival circuit at Cannes, Sundance and Berlinale. They may not receive the multi-million dollar publicity of an Oscar-contender, but don’t be surprised if you find them every bit as rewarding!

Mon 4 - Thu 7 Mar
Dir: Robert Zemeckis Starring: Denzel Washington USA 2012, 2hrs 18mins
Dir: Bruno Dumont Starring: David Dewaele France 2011, 1hr 48mins, subtitled
Seasoned airline pilot Whip Whitaker (Oscar-nominated Denzel Washington) is hailed a hero after he miraculously saves nearly everyone on board during a crash landing, but Whip is an alcoholic and was drinking the night before the flight. When the investigation into the crash discovers Whip’s incriminating toxicology report, this fascinating film develops into an examination of addiction and morality. Whip’s lawyer might be able to save him from prison, but does he deserve the reprieve?
French art-house supremo Dumont returns with his first film since 2009’s Hadewijch: the complex and contemplative Hors Satan. David Dewaele plays ‘the guy’ (le gars) an enigmatic drifter revered by villagers in France for his healing powers. An abused young girl becomes bewitched by his nomadic ways, and ‘le gars’ becomes her protector and avenging angel. A study of the blurred boundaries between good and evil, and a must for fans of esoteric foreign cinema.

A sweet, unexpectedly wonderful little film that’ll leave you with a big dopey smile on your face.
the President himself was busy with wives, mistresses and his treasured stamp collection. A funny and affectionate take on a very important weekend; the scenes between FDR and ‘Bertie’ are particularly charming.
Jiro Dreams of Sushi U Fri 8 - Mon 11 Mar Dir: David Gelb Documentary USA / Japan 2011, 1hr 22mins, subtitled This wonderful documentary follows 85 year-old Jiro Ono, perhaps the world's greatest sushi chef and the taciturn proprietor of Sukiyabashi Jiro, a 10-seat, sushi-only restaurant inauspiciously located in a Tokyo subway station. Obsessed with creating the perfect piece of sushi, Jiro reflects on his life and accomplishments, whilst his son worries about stepping into such big shoes. The ultimate “foodie” film, this is sweet and satisfying.
No 15 Fri 15 - Thu 21 Mar Dir: Pablo Larrain Starring: Gael García Bernal Chile / France 2012, 1hr 58mins, subtitled Based on a true story and nominated for best foreign film at the Oscars. Song for Marion PG Fri 8 - Thu 21 Feb Dir: Paul Andrew Williams Starring: Terence Stamp UK 2012, 1hr 33mins Don’t forget the tissues - this wonderful new drama won’t leave a dry eye in the house! Terence Stamp stars as Arthur, grouchy husband to Marion (Vanessa Redgrave) a zesty optimist who suffers from cancer but continues to support her local choir, the ‘OAPZ’ (the Z is for added street cred). Marion is determined to help her choir qualify for a competition,
but as she weakens, will Arthur take her place? A moving story of love, duty, and raging against the dying of the light.

Dir: Michaël R. Roskam Starring: Matthias Schoenaerts Belgium / Netherlands 2011, 2hrs 9mins, subtitled
Dir: Ken Loach Documentary UK 2013, 1hr 38mins
Nominated for the best foreign language Oscar in 2012, Roskam’s award-winning debut is a thrilling, muscular film. Schoenaerts (who made such a memorable impression in 2012’s Rust and Bone) stars as Jack, a steroid-abusing Belgian farmer approached by a crooked veterinarian to make a deal with a notorious Mafioso. As the agreement becomes strained and the violence escalates, events from Jack’s childhood come back to haunt him.
The screening on Sunday 17th will be followed by a broadcast of a Q&A with Ken Loach live from London. A new impassioned documentary from Ken Loach about a pivotal year in British history. A collective fear of the bitter pre-WWII years created a sense of unity – the spirit of the age was to be our brother’s and our sister’s keeper. Loach has used film from Britain’s regional and national archives, alongside sound recordings and contemporary interviews, to create a rich political and social narrative.
Dir: Lenny Abrahamson Starring: Lars Mikkelsen Ireland 2012, 1hr 28mins Richard is a good-looking student, the star of the school rugby team and a member of Dublin’s social elite. His charmed life falls apart when his interest in the girlfriend of teammate Conor leads to a violent confrontation at a party. Richard faces a stark choice – rely on his family’s privileged position to save him or accept responsibility for his actions. With echoes of 2004’s Mean Creek and last year’s The Hunt, this is an absorbing, brilliantly-acted drama that lingers in the mind.

Stoker 18 Fri 22 - Thu 28 Mar Dir: Chan-wook Park Starring: Mia Wasikowska USA / UK 2013, 1hr 39mins Chan-wook’s (Oldboy) English language debut is a sensuous and thrilling gothic drama. When India’s (Wasikowska) father dies, her estranged Uncle Charlie (Goode) turns up at the funeral. An unnerving mix of charm and malevolence, Charlie takes advantage of the fragile state of India’s mother (Kidman) and establishes himself as a pseudo

pater familias - one who will go to extreme lengths to protect his family. Full of homages to Hitchcock and sharing his jet-black sense of humour, this is wickedly entertaining cinema.
Railways Remembered: Diesel Power on British Railways Introduced by Rob Foxon
Dir: Bill Jones Actors: Graham Chapman UK 2013, 1hr 24mins
Sun 17 Mar, 2.30pm Tickets: £6.50
Graham Chapman, probably best remembered as 'the dead one from Monty Python', writes and stars in the animated movie of his own life story, A Liar's Autobiography. Although Chapman selfishly dropped dead in 1989, he had taken the trouble to record himself reading his book, A Liar's Autobiography – and those recordings have now ingeniously been used to provide Chapman's voice for this 3D animated feature.
The dawn of the diesel age on Britain's main line railways started around 80 years ago. Recall the fascinating history of diesel traction in this new programme of rare archive films which includes prewar railcar experiments, post-war development of the mainline diesel electric, and the mass production of the hugely successful Brush Type 2 locomotive at Loughborough in 1961, some of which are still in traffic today.
Chinatown 15 BFI digital re-issue Fri 22 - Mon 25 Mar Dir: Roman Polanski Starring: Jack Nicholson USA 1974, 2hrs 10mins Polanski’s 1974 masterpiece of corruption and illicit desire in the sun-dappled paradise of 1930s LA arrives as a gorgeous new digital restoration from the BFI. Jack Nicholson stars as private eye Jake Gittes, hired by the beautiful Evelyn Mulwray for what appears to be a straightforward divorce assignment. But Gittes soon finds himself out of his depth when he stumbles upon a complex murder case linked to the city’s water supply. One of the all-time great American crime movies.

Dir: Christopher Kenneally Featuring: David Lynch USA 2012, 1hr 39mins Documentary
Dir: Carlos Reygadas Actors: Nathalia Acevedo Mexico 2012, 1hr 55mins, subtitled
Dir: Cate Shortland Starring: Saskia Rosendahl Germany / UK 2012, 1hr 49mins, subtitled
Are the days of celluloid numbered? Will the whir of the 35mm projector become a forgotten sound, a museum oddity? This wonderful documentary charts the rise of digital cinema and the declining use of film, based on a series of interviews conducted by Keanu Reeves with prominent filmmakers including David Lynch, Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese.
Winner of best director at Cannes last year, Reygadas’ (Battle in Heaven) semi-autobiographical new film loosely follows a rural family as they experience the joys and pain of living in the Mexican countryside. Awash with incredible imagery, this is art-cinema at its most mysterious and quixotic. With echoes of Tarkovsky and Malick, this needs to be seen on the big screen.
A beautifully shot and awardwinning film set in post-WWII Germany, where 14-year-old Lore and her siblings find themselves alone after their SS officer father and Nazi mother are arrested by allied forces. Journeying across a ruined country to the safe haven of their grandmother’s house in the north, the children must rely on the help of someone they have been taught to hate – charismatic young Jew, Thomas.

‘As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster’. The DMU Film Society pick for this month’s theme of ‘American Classics’ is Scorsese’s awardwinning gangster flick, based on the true-story of Henry Hill – a small-time gangster working his way up through the Mob’s hierarchy with his two friends.
Chosen by the University of Leicester Film Society, Rob Reiner’s timeless coming of age film is a favourite of ours at Phoenix. A heartfelt and brilliantly acted story of four young friends on an adventure, as Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern go looking for the missing body of a local teenager.

Digital Arts
Using a specially-designed website and Twitter, painter-turned-digital-artist Sally Sheinman wants your answers to this question.
What Makes You, You?
Using an iPad - and your answers as inspiration – she’ll create a unique painting every day, resulting in at least 200 new images over the course of this six month exhibition.
Phoenix cafebar Fri 1 – Thu 21 Mar Free!
You can watch the project unfold at Phoenix through an exhibition in our cafebar and via Twitter #WhatMakesYouYou? The paintings will also be offered back to the public in a variety of ways – including freeto-download phone wallpaper and as signed prints. As an artist, Sally is motivated by the infinite scope of the question ‘What makes you, you? and the opportunity to capture what makes people different. She is fascinated by people: their similarities and differences genetically, culturally, socially and individually. Her images are a new type of portrait.
