It’s Spark Festival time again! Leicester is home to the biggest children’s arts festival in the country, and at Phoenix our programme is jam–packed with digital fun for all ages. Experiment with new technologies in a short workshop; catch a family film; or create your own ‘light art’ in our Cube Gallery with Water Light Graffiti, an amazing wall embedded with thousands of LEDs that light up when you paint on it with water. A huge thank you to everyone who filled in our annual customer survey last month: we got over 950 responses. We’re currently looking through all your comments to see how we can make things better for you, and shape Phoenix’s future as we continue to adapt to pressures on public funding. We know that access–for–all is important to many of you, and with your support we plan to develop our focus on wider community engagement through our education programme, Access Cinema, our artists’ bursary scheme, and involvement in local and national festivals. Film–wise this month, the UK Green Film Festival returns for a fourth year, and we’re marking the 70th anniversary of VE Day with screenings of British drama A Royal Night Out and Germany’s Phoenix. (Phoenix showing Phoenix – a sure–fire recipe for confusion!) And we’ll let you be the judges of whether the new version of Far From the Madding Crowd, with Carey Mulligan as headstrong Bathsheba Everdine, is a worthy rival to the 1967 classic starring Julie Christie. Post your comments on our review board.
Phoenix is a registered charity. Our aim is to bring inspirational film and art to all. Made possible with the support of:

HONEYTRAP + Q&A
18
Sat 2 May, 7.30pm Dir: Rebecca Johnson Cast: Jessica Sula, Lucien Laviscount UK 2014, 1hr 38mins
Followed by a Q&A with director Rebecca Johnson. Set in Brixton and inspired by real events, Honeytrap is an urban drama told from a girl's point of view. Yearning for love and status, fifteen-yearold Layla is swept into a whirlwind romance with self-styled gang leader/rapper Troy - and then spat out the other side. Desperate to win him back, she offers to lead another boy who's in love with her into an ambush.
Gosling’s directorial debut is a dark, neon-drenched fantasy noir. Set in the abandoned realms of Lost River, a single mother is forced to take extreme measures to save her family’s decrepit family home while her son Bones begins an investigation that puts him on a collision course with the town’s feared bully. Influenced by Lynch and Noé, it’s a mind-blowing visual cocktail.
GOOD KILL

Cushioned by distance and with the daily missions beginning to weigh heavy on his conscience, Egan’s judgement and relationship with his family begin to suffer. Andrew Niccol’s contemporary war drama is a fascinating examination of the ethics of modern warfare.

LEICESTER BEVERLEY + MAKING OF DOC
TBC
Fri 8 - Mon 11 May Dir: Alexander Thomas Cast: Laya Lewis, Vicky McClure UK 2015, 1hr Made in Leicester and set in the city in 1980, Beverley is a short film that follows a mixed-race girl’s struggle to carve out a sense of identity in a confusing, shifting cultural landscape. Hoping for change, a move from a decaying, urban environment to the comfort and theoretical safety of white suburbia doesn’t provide the hope and opportunities Beverley wished for. The film will be screened with the ‘Making-of-Beverley’ documentary.

THE INVISIBLE LIFE
Hugo, a man on the cusp of middle age, is in the grip of an unshakeable torpor, squandering his life away. Facing the impending death of his friend and professional mentor Antonio, he realises something must change. Existing somewhere between the existential horror of Bergman and absurdist literary dread of Kafka, Portuguese director Gonçalves’ first film in twenty-five years is a haunting, small-budget world cinema treasure waiting to be discovered.

Fri 8 - Thu 14 May Dir: Christian Petzold Cast: Nina Hoss, Ronald Zehrfeld Germany / Poland 2014, 1hr 38mins From the maker of 2012’s Barbara comes another gripping thriller, set after the events of the Holocaust. A disfigured concentration-camp survivor, unrecognisable after facial reconstruction surgery, searches
ravaged post-war Berlin for her husband who might have betrayed her to the Nazis. Part mystery, part film noir Petzold’s film is bold and enthralling, examining the physical and mental scars left by the Holocaust.
Hsiang Chienn’s film is a beautifully-observed and warmhearted study of middle-age and isolation which follows Ling, a garment worker looking after her ailing mother-in-law. On one of her many trips to visit her in hospital, she discovers a man covered in bandages on the same ward. Developing an unexpected bond with him through bathing his wounds, long-forgotten feelings of freedom and sexuality begin to blossom in Ling.

Another directorial debut makes its way to Phoenix this month in the form of the powerful The Water Diviner. After the devastating losses at the Battle of Gallipoli, it seems there is no hope for Joshua (Crowe), an Australian farmer whose three sons are presumed dead. Determined to find out what happened he begins an incredible journey across the globe, one that’s still coming to grips with the mass destruction left behind by the First World War.

THE VOICES

Fri 22 May, 8.40pm Dir: Marjane Satrapi Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Gemma Arterton USA 2014, 1hr 41mins Ryan Reynolds is Jerry, a seeminglynormal factory worker living in his apartment with his dog and cat. But something’s not quite right: Jerry speaks to them and they speak back, offering him some rather unconventional advice. After lonely Jerry is stood up on a date, his animal companions send him on a hilariously twisted and depraved journey. Marjane Satrapi's (Persepolis) new film is a very bloody and twisted on-the-edge satire.
THE LODGER + LIVE MINIMA SOUNDTRACK PG Sat 23 May, 7.30pm Dir: Alfred Hitchcock Cast: Ivor Novello UK 1927, 1hr 10mins
