Wed 1 – Thu 9 May

Thu 2 May, 6.15pm

Dir: Michael Winterbottom Cast: Steve Coogan, Stephen Fry UK 2013, 1hr 41mins

Dir: Various 1hr 45mins, subtitled (parts)

From Steve Coogan and Michael Winterbottom, the team behind the acclaimed 24 Hour Party People and The Trip, comes this hugely entertaining biopic of Paul Raymond. Once Britain’s richest man and named the ‘King of Soho’, Raymond amassed a huge fortune through an empire of gentlemen’s clubs and magazines. A funny and fascinating account of Britain’s changing attitude to sex and sexuality, Coogan gives pathos to the complex character of Raymond whilst the superb script comes from Matt Greenhalgh (Control).

A feature-length selection of short live action and animated films from the EE British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA). Including Here to Fall; the superb The Curse from Morocco; a tale of Norse Warriors invaded by a very unusual army in Tumult; I'm Fine Thanks; the winner of Best Animation, The Making of Longbird; a London drama in Goodnight; and Lyne Ramsay’s Swimmer – the stunning short film she made for the Olympics.

Trance 15 Fri 3 – Thu 9 May Dir: Danny Boyle Cast: James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel, Rosario Dawson UK 2013, 1hr 41mins After his astonishing Olympic ceremony last year, Danny Boyle is back in the director’s chair for this hypnotic thriller. James McAvoy stars as auctioneer Simon, recruited by a vicious gang to help them steal a painting. When the painting goes missing and an injured Simon suffers

amnesia, the gang’s enigmatic leader Franck (Cassel) enlists hypnotherapist Elizabeth to help him remember - but Simon may not be all he appears, and this enthralling twisty-turny crimedrama has hidden depths.

Dir: Kleber Mendonça Filho Cast: Sebastiao Formiga Brazil 2012, 2hrs 11mins, subtitled This multi-award winner arrives on a wave of critical praise. A snapshot of life within a nouveauriche apartment complex in Brazil, director Filho expertly explores the characters to create one of this year’s truly unique films. When the residents of the complex hear about a local business offering security-guards it stirs their latent paranoia and they hire the firm. But the firm’s boss has revenge on his mind and tension within the community begins to build.

Mon 6 – Wed 8 May

A short 3-day run of this criticallyadored little cracker about the life of Teri Hooley – the godfather of the Belfast punk movement. During the dark days of the troubles, Hooley opened a record shop in the middle of Belfast which would soon become the centre for all things punk – including a record label which released The Undertones’ classic hit ‘Teenage Kicks’. With great performances and a superb soundtrack, this is a movie with heart and soul.

Fri 10 – Mon 13 May Dir: Lee Daniels Cast: Matthew McConaughey, John Cusack USA 2012, 1hr 47mins Precious director Lee Daniels marks a radical change of pace with the release of this sweaty, sexually-charged noir thriller. Matthew McConaughey (continuing his thoroughly enjoyable career renaissance) stars as a newspaper researcher hired by femme fatale Charlotte (Kidman) to save her cop-killer lover from death row. Praised by some critics and reviled by others, you decide for yourself. One thing’s for sure, this rollicking mix of black comedy and swampy thriller is unlike anything else around.

A moving story of two priests striving to build a hospital in a shanty town in Buenos Aires, from the director of 2012’s Carancho. Ricardo Darin (The Secrets in their Eyes) stars as the determined Julian, using his political connections to push through building plans, whilst his fellow priest Nicolas struggles with his faith after his last project ended in tragedy. With cartel violence rising, the two friends find their lives in danger as they fight for the community.

Home marks the directorial debut of Muzaffer Ozdemir, the Palme d’Or-winning actor of Ceylan’s films Uzak and Clouds of May. Dogan, a depressed architect, falls ill whilst camping and is advised by his doctor to take a break. He decides to travel to the countryside of his childhood hoping to cure the ennui that’s beset him, only to find his homeland has changed dramatically with the onset of urbanisation. A meditative and moving journey.

I'm So Excited 15 (Los amantes pasajeros) Fri 10 – Thu 23 May Dir: Pedro Almodovar Cast: Javier Cámara Spain 2013, 1hr 30mins, subtitled Pedro Almodovar, the flamboyant father of esoteric Spanish cinema, returns with this feel-good and endlessly fun mid-air romp. Facing a possible crash-landing during a flight to Mexico, the kooky crew and a collection of odd-ball passengers squabble, sing and get up to the odd saucy antic trying to come to terms with their fate.

Frothy and hilarious stuff from Pedro; look out for cameos from Almodovar veterans Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas.

Fri 24 – Thu 30 May Dir: Fred Schepisi Cast: Charlotte Rampling Australia 2011, 1hr 59mins This award-winning adaptation of Patrick White’s novel of the same name features an all-star cast including Geoffrey Rush and Judy Davis. Rampling plays wealthy dying matriarch Elizabeth Hunter who, despite being on her deathbed, still exerts a destructive iron grip on her grown-up children Basil and Dorothy. Summoned to her Sydney mansion bedside, Basil and Dorothy have inheritance on their minds, but Elizabeth has other ideas. An intelligent, well-written and brilliantly-acted family drama.

Dir: Shane Meadows Documentary UK 2013, 3hrs This highly anticipated documentary from Shane Meadows (director of This is England and a huge fan of The Stone Roses) follows the legendary Manchester band throughout their incredible resurrection in 2012, where they played a string of concerts worldwide to the joy of their ardent fan base. Following the film there will be a Q&A with Shane Meadows and The Stone Roses broadcast live via satellite from Manchester!

Fri 31 May – Thu 6 Jun

This thoughtful film comes from Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting) with a script by stars Matt Damon and John Krasinski. Hot-shot gas company employee Steve Butler arrives in a backwater town to convince residents to sign over their land for ‘fracking’ – extracting natural gas by drilling. Taking an interest in local teacher Alice, he finds his task further complicated by an environmentalist activist determined to stop the land sale. Superb support comes from Hal Holbrook, and Frances McDormand as Steve’s colleague.

Dir: Dror Moreh Documentary Israel / France 2012, 1hr 41mins, subtitled

Dir: Jeff Nichols Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan USA 2012, 2hrs 10mins

Dir: Franck Khalfoun Cast: Elijah Wood France / USA 2012, 1hr 29mins

This enthralling Oscar-nominated documentary is based on a series of interviews with the former heads of the Shin Bet – the intelligence agency charged with defending Israel against terrorism. Never before interviewed, these six men reveal the fascinating history of this secretive group and talk candidly about past atrocities committed. A powerful and thoughtful film, one interviewee reflects on what the cycle of violence means for the future of Israel: 'We win the battles but we're losing the war.'

Jeff Nichols’ (Take Shelter) new film stars McConaughey as Mud, a fugitive hiding out on a Mississippi island. Discovered by teenagers Ellis and Neckbone, Mud tells them he needs their help to escape the police after murdering a rival for his true love Juniper. Excited by the danger of helping an outlaw, the boys agree to carry messages to Juniper, but Mud may not be what he claims. Steeped in Americana, this coming-of-age drama shifts into an immensely satisfying and atmospheric thriller.

One for the horror-heads, this remake of the violent 1980 film of the same name stars Elijah Wood as Frank Zito, a ruthless scalpcollecting serial-killer – Frodo Baggins he ain’t! After the death of his abusive mother, Frank works in her former mannequin store where he becomes obsessed with Anna, a local artist. Does Frank want another scalp or will it be true love? Shot entirely from Frank’s point of view, this is unnerving and memorable modern horror.

Dir: Sergio Leone Cast: Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson Italy / USA 1968, 2hrs 45mins

This wonderful slice of 50’s horror stars Vincent Price at his charming and creepy best. Presented on a new digital print, The Mad Magician was originally released by Columbia in 1954 and gained a cult following after it was the first film shown in 3D on television. Price plays stage magician Gallico the Great, driven insane when a greedy rival steals his wife and tricks. Enraged, Gallico takes his violent revenge but must cover his tracks from a young policeman.

For our monthly classic cinema slot we present Leone’s masterful western on a 35mm print from the BFI. A railroad tycoon hires blueeyed mercenary Frank to kill a local landowner for his plot, but the land passes to his widow Jill. The widow comes under the protection of local bandit Cheyenne and enigmatic gunman ‘Harmonica’ (Bronson) - who have their own reasons for wanting a showdown with Frank. A rare chance to experience this magnificent film on the big screen.

Often cited as one of the greatest animated films ever made, Takahata’s powerful drama is recommended for older children. During the final days of World War II, 14 year old Seita and his sister lose their mother and find themselves alone in a country devastated by war.

To celebrate the release of his latest novel Magician's End, bestselling US fantasy author Raymond E. Feist will be joining us at Phoenix for an evening of readings, signings and a Q&A session. One of fantasy fiction's best-known authors and creator of The Riftwar Cycle series, Raymond is visiting the UK as part of his 2013 tour - a rare opportunity to meet one of the fantasy fiction's biggest names. Presented in association with Harper Voyager.

One of the most popular ballets in the world, live from Moscow. With the Orchestra of the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre, the Bolshoi Soloists, and Corps de Ballet, based on the play by William Shakespeare. The rivalry between the Capulet and Montague families brings bloodshed to the city of Verona. Romeo, the Montague heir, attends a ball where he meets Juliet and the two fall instantly in love – but they discover they belong to two rival families...

'★★★★★ - Ferociously witty' - The Telegraph In this critically-acclaimed new play it’s 1974 and the corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. In a hung parliament, the ruling party holds on by a thread. Votes are won and lost by one, fist fights erupt in the bars, and ill MPs are hauled in to cast their votes. * Encore screenings are recordings of the first night’s live performance.

Sat 18th May, 12pm – till late Day tickets: £25 (includes 5 films and 10% off food in our cafe bar on Saturday) Individual film tickets: £6 (on sale closer to the event if available) Ladies, gentlemen and NerfHerders!
