Phoenix is going digital in November with a programme packed full of art exhibitions, events and workshops. Whether you’re a digital art aficionado or a newcomer wanting to learn more, there’s plenty to see and do this month. Phoenix is proud to be at the heart of a thriving digital arts community in Leicester. Many of the workshops and events in our latest programme (p 14-15) come from this community – artists, musicians and curators eager to share their skills and creativity. As technology becomes a bigger part of our everyday lives, digital art offers new ways of looking at the world, helping us make sense of things and challenging us to think differently. It can also be playful and fun. It encourages us to stop watching and start taking part, giving us all the chance to be artists! Movies are also becoming more digital – from how they’re made to how they’re shown – and the links between cinema and digital art couldn’t be stronger. From computer animation to 3D, artists and filmmakers are using many of the same methods to express their ideas, while satellite technology brings theatre, opera and ballet to people from across the world. Come along and find out more.

Dir: Emad Burnat, Guy Davidi Documentary Occupied Palestinian Territory 2011, 1hr 34mins

Dir: Chris Butler, Sam Fell Voices: Anna Kendrick, John Goodman USA 2012, 1hr 32mins

Offering a personal insight into life in Palestine, this account of nonviolent resistance to the actions of the Israeli army was filmed almost entirely by a Palestinian farmer. The 5 cameras of the title work as chapters; each reveals a part of the local villagers' struggle during protests against encroaching settlements before it is destroyed. Communicating the reality of resistance in a way a fictional film simply couldn’t, this is an essential document of modern conflict.

An annoying older sibling, school bullies – most kids have to cope with these problems – but when you can also see ghosts and talk to the dead like little Norman Babcock, life can be very challenging indeed! Trying to save his town from an ancient curse, Norman must contend with zombies, ghouls and disbelieving grown-ups! This is a wonderful stop-motion animated film from the makers of 2009’s Coraline and features a superb voice-cast.

Dir: Sally Potter Actors: Elle Fanning, Christina Hendricks UK 2012, 1hr 29mins

Dir: Josh Radnor Actors: Josh Radnor, Elizabeth Olsen USA 2011, 1hr 37mins

Dir: Asghar Farhadi Actors: Golshifteh Farahani, Shehab Hosseini Iran 2009, 1hr 58mins

Ginger and Rosa are inseparable best friends in 1960s London in this gorgeous coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of the escalating Cuban missile crisis. As the threat of nuclear war edges closer the girls find themselves torn apart by politics, love and heartache. Fine performances from a great ensemble cast including Annette Benning and Timothy Spall, but it's Elle Fanning who’s sparked awards-buzz as the touchingly naive Ginger.

Great news for all fans of charming American indie! After his previous film Happythankyoumoreplease was criminally overlooked for UK release, what a relief that Josh Radnor’s new movie has been picked up for distribution. Ex-student Jesse returns to his alma mater for his favourite professor’s retirement party and strikes up a relationship with student Zibby. An effortlessly enjoyable movie about getting old and growing up.

Farhadi’s follow up to his superb Oscar winner A Separation was actually made one year earlier but is only now getting a UK release – cause for celebration amongst fans of intelligent cinema. Three wealthy families from Tehran arrive for a sea-side vacation, but one of their group – schoolteacher Elly – disappears. Did she drown or run away, and why do the families know nothing about her? Complex and provocative, About Elly is riveting.

indoctrinated into the group, will Dodd’s teachings mean Freddie’s redemption or destruction? Filmed on 70mm, this is a gorgeous, unnerving film with electric performances from its two leads.

Frankenweenie 3D PG Fri 16 - Thu 22 Nov Dir: Tim Burton Actors: Christopher Lee, Martin Short USA / UK 2012, 1hr 26mins After the somewhat muted reaction to Dark Shadows, this is Tim Burton back doing what he does best – a gorgeous stop-motion animated film reminiscent of A Nightmare before Christmas and Corpse Bride. When his dog Sparky passes away, young Victor decides to use the power of science to bring

My Brother the Devil 15 Mon 19 - Thu 22 Nov

him back to life! With nods to the creature features of the 30s and 40s, the film also calls to mind last year’s Hugo in its celebration of cinema and filmmaking.

The Shining 15 Fri 23 - Mon 26 Nov

Fri 23 - Thu 29 Nov

Dir: Sally El Hosaini Actors: James Floyd, Fady Elsayed UK 2012, 1hr 51mins

Dir: Christopher Petzold Actors: Nina Hoss, Ronald Zehrfeld Germany 2012, 1hr 45mins

Dir: Stanley Kubrick Actors: Jack Nicholson, Shelly Duvall USA 1980, 2hrs 22mins

El Hosaini’s debut feature is a fascinating look at inner-city life that picked up awards at the Berlin and Sundance film festivals. Two brothers from an Egyptian-immigrant household find themselves at a crossroads when youngest brother Mo decides to follow Rashid into a life of drug-running. Forget typical London gangster films, My Brother the Devil has far more in common with Andrew Haigh’s superb 2011 film Weekend. Smart, artfully made and engaging filmmaking.

A multi award-winning film from Germany set ten years before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Nina Hoss plays Barbara, a successful Berlin doctor whose application to leave East Germany sees her banished to a rural hospital. Plotting to escape to the West to join her lover, but continually harassed by cruel Stasi agents, Barbara is drawn to a mysterious fellow doctor; but who can she trust? A gripping thriller, reminiscent of The Lives of Others with a stunning central performance.

Brand new restoration of the previously un-released US 144 minute cut of Kubrick's feardrenched masterpiece. Writer Jack Torrance moves his family to the Overlook Hotel for the winter after he lands the job of caretaker. As a huge blizzard envelopes the hotel, a malevolent spirit begins to take over Jack. His family are so ungrateful. Perhaps they do need "correcting"? ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY. ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY.

Argo 15 Fri 30 Nov - Thu 6 Dec Dir: Ben Affleck Actors: Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston USA 2012, 2hrs Tehran 1979: during the Iranian revolution a group of six American diplomats take shelter in the Canadian ambassador’s house after the US embassy is taken over. With time running out, it’s up to expert CIA “exfiltrator” Tony Mendez to devise a bizarre rescue plan involving Hollywood producers and the filming of a

fake sci-fi movie. That it’s based on a true story makes it all the more incredible! Argo feels like a cracking 70s film and is terrific entertainment – slick, funny and tense.

Dir: Rodney Ascher Actors: Bill Blakemore,Geoffrey Cocks USA 2012, 1hr 42mins

Dir: Michael Haneke Actors: Jean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva Austria / France 2012, 2hrs 7mins

Dir: Andrey Zvyagintsev Actors: Nadezhda Markina,Andrey Simirnov Russia 2012, 1hr 49mins

To coincide with our long-weekend screening of the extended cut of The Shining, we present this superb new documentary on a short four day run. Described as “one of the greatest movies about movies”, Ascher’s film presents a study of The Shining from a collection of experts, conspiracy theorists and numerologists. Funny, fascinating and consistently entertaining, this is heaven for both general film fans and Kubrick obsessives.

Haneke, the director of the multi award-winning The White Ribbon, returns with another masterpiece of world cinema which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year. Georges and Anne, two cultured and retired music teachers, live in their handsomely furnished Parisian apartment. They attend the theatre and flirt like besotted teenagers. When Annes has a stroke, it's left to Georges to care for her. A devastating and profoundly moving film that deserves every award it gets.

Zvyagintsev’s beautiful drama picked up the Special Jury Prize at Cannes. Middle-aged grandmother Elena lives with Vladimir, her wealthy but coldhearted second-husband. When Vladimir has a heart attack, Elena hopes for inheritance money to help her poor son Sergey, only for Vladimir’s absent daughter to return. A morally complex, Hitchcockian thriller develops as Elena is pushed to consider desperate acts to help her family.

Railways Remembered – Freight Trains

Dir: Giorgos Lanthimos Actors: Stavros Psyllakis, Aris Servetalis Greece 2011, 1hr 33mins

Dir: Laurence Olivier Actors: Laurence Olivier, Cedric Hardwicke UK 1955, 2hrs 41mins

Sun 18 Nov, 2.30pm

A haunting and beautiful new film from Giorgos Lanthimos, the director behind 2009’s art-house hit Dogtooth. The Alps are an organisation of four nameless characters, who offer a griefcounselling service like no other – they will impersonate the recently deceased to help their clients come to terms with their loss. A superbly performed tale about love, pain and the refusal to accept change.

Join us for a special screening of Richard III introduced by Prof. Lin Foxhall and Archaeologist Richard Buckley of the University of Leicester, who have been leading the excavation of the suspected remains of Richard III in Greyfriars. They may even bring along some artefacts for all to see! Olivier’s 1955 film is the definitive version with an all British cast including Sir John Gielgud.

Railways were developed to carry coal and freight traffic, not passengers, and in the days before the juggernaut they did it very well indeed! Recall the heyday of heavy freight steam trains and clanking goods wagons. Ride with a railway delivery driver and his 'mechanical horse' on the streets of 1950s Britain – all captured on rare archive film, much of it being shown for the first time!

Showing: Sat 24 Nov, 2pm

Start the month of November with road movies from two of America’s greatest living directors. Mallick’s feature debut is perhaps his greatest, as young lovers Kit and Holly run away together after Kit ‘saves’ her from her father – Badlands is timeless, shocking and unforgettable. We follow with Stone’s hugely controversial trip to America’s dark heart starring Woody Harrelson and Juliet Lewis as lovers/ psychotic serial killers/media stars Mickey and Mallory.

Two superb romantic films, with Bergman, Hepburn and two sensational performances from Bogey. One of the greatest love stories ever made, what more can be said about Casablanca? Instantly recognisable, superbly written; it has both the warmth of an old friend and the excitement of new love. We follow with the timeless African Queen, where a gin-swilling riverboat captain is persuaded by a strait-laced missionary to use his boat to attack an enemy warship.

He vastly outspends his resources but, finding his coffers empty, reassures his loyal steward that all will be well. Meet the artists and curators of our latest exhibition, Intuition and Ingenuity, which is continuing in the Cube gallery and cafebar until 9th November.

Symbiotic is an exhibition where artworks interact both with each other and their visitors. They communicate through colour and sound, working together to form a complex whole that responds actively to the presence of people and changes in the gallery. When you enter the gallery you become part of the artworks, helping them grow and creating new, symbiotic relationships.

The talk will feature Alex May and Anna Dumitriu with The Robot Companion, Vicky Isley and Paul Smith from boredomresearch, Tom Castle from the Trope Troupe, Sean Clark from DMU and Nick Lambert, Chair of the Computer Arts Society. There will be special screenings of Decoding Alan Turing, a film about the life and work of the code breaker and computer pioneer.

There’ll be an opportunity to meet the artists and talk about the ideas contained within their artwork at a workshop as part of Creative Technology Live on 24th November.
