Untouchable 15 (Intouchables) • subtitled Mon 1 - Thu 11 Oct Dir: Olivier Nakache, Eric Toledano Actors: François Cluzet, Omar Sy France 2011, 1hr 52mins This wonderful feel-good movie about the friendship between Philippe, a wealthy Quadriplegic, and Driss, a man from the ghetto hired as his live-in carer, is a sensation. Smashing box-office records in its native France and picking up numerous festival awards along the way, it is now

Dir: Woody Allen Actors: Jesse Eisenberg USA 2012, 1hr 51mins
Dir: Miguel Gomes Actors: Teresa Madruga Portugal / Ger 2012, 1hr 58mins
Maxime Godart stars as Nicolas, a boy living a blissful suburban life with his mother and father, spending time enjoying school and playing with his friends. Disaster strikes, however, when he overhears news that his mother is pregnant! Thinking the baby will replace him, Nicolas sets out to be the best son he can possibly be. This sweet and charming film from France is a real treat.
Hot on the heels of the magical Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen continues his European tour with this Roman adventure. Weaving together four distinct plots, the highlight is the story of a neurotic opera director (played, of course, by Allen himself) struggling to stage a new show in the city. Featuring a host of charming performances from some of Hollywood’s finest actors, To Rome with Love is quite simply a pleasure from start to finish.
Our Beloved Month of August director Miguel Gomes brings us another delectable slice of art-house fare. Centering on the tragic love affair between Aurora and Gianluca and filled to the brim with the language of film, Tabu is a cinephile’s dream, awash with glorious celluloid textures, RKO pastiches and Murnau references. Nostalgic yet humorous, Gomes’ film is a beautiful meditation on yearning for the things we have lost.

Together the Bondurant Brothers have built a successful moonshine bootlegging business in prohibition-era Virginia. But their success draws the attention of a psychopathic deputy (Guy Pearce) and they are forced to fight back or risk losing their livelihood. With top notch performances from an all-star cast and director John Hillcoat (The Proposition) at the helm, this is a brutal, thrilling tale of men walking the thin line between hero and outlaw.
The winner of best documentary at this year’s Oscars. An inner-city school football team, the Manassas Tigers of Memphis, have been on a losing streak for 14 years. Players in gangs are getting shot and the Tigers are routinely hired out as an easy practice team for bigger schools. In steps volunteer coach Bill Courtney, a kind-hearted man determined to turn around the team by teaching pride and self-respect. An inspiring and fascinating true story.

Described as A Streetcar Named Desire in the English countryside; this woozy, beautifully shot British film features standout performances from Christine Bottomley (The Arbor) and Anna Madeley (Brideshead Revisited). Mild-mannered Gillian arrives on a Strawberry farm and meets charming Scottish drifter, Kev. Life is blissful until Gillian’s controlling sister arrives.
An annoying older sibling, school bullies – most kids have to cope with these problems - but when you can also see ghosts and talk to the dead like little Norman Babcock, life can be very challenging indeed! Trying to save his town from an ancient curse, Norman must contend with zombies, ghouls, and disbelieving grown-ups! This wonderful stop-motion animated film from the makers of 2009’s Coraline features a superb voice-cast including Casey Affleck and John Goodman.
Not a period drama as the title would suggest, but a fascinating documentary tale of riches to rags. The billionaire Siegel family (businessman David, surgicallyenhanced peroxide-blond Jackie and 8 kids) – their fortune made in the timeshare business – start construction on the most expensive family home in America, only for the 2008 financial crisis to hit and leave them struggling to make ends meet. Schadenfreude aside, this Sundance Festival award-winning film makes for compelling viewing.

On the Road TBC Fri 19 Oct – Thu 1 Nov Dir: Walter Salles Actors: Sam Riley, Viggo Mortensen France / UK 2012, 2hrs 17mins This new film from Francis Ford Coppola and Walter Salles, the director of The Motorcycle Diaries, is a gorgeously shot road-trip based on Jack Kerouac’s classic beat-generation novel. Sam Riley stars as “Sal Paradise” a New York writer disheartened with life. After meeting charming ex-con Dean Moriarty, the two set off across 1940's America - desperate
to break free from society’s constrictions. Featuring a beautiful jazz soundtrack, this is a wonderful celebration of youth and ‘the mad ones...who burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles’.

Dir: Ron Fricke Documentary USA 2011, 1hr 42mins
Ron Fricke, one of the filmmakers behind seminal montage masterpieces Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka, returns with Samsara, an epic journey across 25 countries in 5 continents. Shot over a period of 5 years on 70mm, the result is a breathtakingly beautiful tour of the globe – from the regimented en-masse training of Buddhist monks to the desolation left after Hurricane Katrina. Largely dialogue-free, this is a hypnotic dreamy voyage that carries you away to far-flung cultures. Magic.
Dir: Leos Carax Actors: Denis Lavant, Edith Scob France / Germany 2012, 1hr 55mins
Dir: Rian Johnson Actors: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt USA / China 2011, 1hr 58mins
Praised by the critics and nominated for the Palm d’Or at Cannes, Leos Carax returns to feature film with an utterly surrealist trip – it’s like something from another dimension of filmmaking. Denis Lavant (Beau Travail) stars as Monsieur Oscar, chauffeured around Paris in a white limo. He’s an assassin, a business-man, a tramp – each of his multiple personalities created in the back of the limo then played out. It’s reminiscent of Kafka, Nikolai Gogol and David Lynch, and a must-see.
Lauded by critics after launching the Toronto film festival, Brick director Rian Johnson’s film is a stylish and brilliantly realised sci-fi time-travel thriller that completely revitalises the genre. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Joe, an elite assassin in the not-too-distantfuture forced into a deadly game of cat & mouse with his older self, played with relish by Bruce Willis. A mind-bendingly ingenious film with standout performances from the two leads, Looper is destined to be a classic.

This exhibition brings together important artists from digital art pioneers to emerging contemporary practitioners, including Roman Verostko, William Latham, Ernest Edmonds, Greg Garvey, Patrick Tresset, Anna Dumitriu and Alex May, with newly commissioned work by boredomresearch and Paul Brown. Turn a trip to the cinema into a great value night out with our £13 film and dine offer. At Phoenix, you can enjoy freshly-cooked food before or after your film in our relaxed café bar.
A new temporary car park with 45 spaces has been opened on the currently unused land next to Phoenix – providing more parking options for customers visiting us by car.
Choose from our regular menu or the daily specials board – today’s selection includes Mozzarella Chilli & Dill Fishcakes; Garlic Mushroom and Rocket Penne; and Smoked Haddock & Pea Risotto. Come along and find out what’s cooking tomorrow!
Parking will cost £1 per hour, £1.50 for two hours, £2 for three hours and £4 all day - via pay and display. Parking after 6pm and on Sundays will be free.
Food and drinks are served throughout the day – see back page for opening times. Please note that at times we can get busy, so be sure to leave at least an hour if you’re eating before your film.
The space has been made available on a temporary basis by Leicester City Council to make parking easier for Phoenix customers and businesses in the surrounding cultural quarter. Further parking is also available in bays around Phoenix and in the nearby NCP carpark. See backpage for full details.
Enjoy a drink with your film At Phoenix, you’re welcome to take any drink you order at our bar into the cinema.
