With Halloween this month, it’s time for something a little less relaxing! We’ll be challenging horror fans to survive our all night horror movie marathon ‘Frightarama’ (p12). From horror to ‘Suspense’, we bring you a short season of Alfred Hitchcock classic thrillers including Daphne Du Maurier adaptations Rebecca and Jamaica Inn, the classic Rear Window, and Dial M for Murder – seen for the first time, as it was originally created, in 3D! (p13) We’re really excited this month to be launching the brand new Phoenix Interact Labs. Equipped with the latest kit – a 3D printer, Raspberry Pi computer development kit, computer-controlled lighting and a whole lot more – the Labs will enable artists, technologists and young people to get creative with digital technology. (p15) Children will also get the chance to dabble with computers over half term on our fun Scratch and Makey Makey workshop. Who needs a keyboard when you can use bananas! (p15) And lastly, a big hello to all students starting the new academic year. With cinema tickets just £5 with an NUS card, we hope you’ll take time out from your studies to pop into Phoenix every once in a while.

A film about the simple joy of a shared experience.

Dir: Pascal Bonitzer Cast: Jean-Pierre Bacri, Kristin Scott Thomas France 2013, 1hr 40mins, subtitled Phoenix favourites Kristen Scott Thomas and Jean-Pierre Bacri star in this French comedy-drama. Bacri plays unhappy professor Damien, bored at work and ignored by his glamorous wife (Thomas) and Senior Judge father. When asked by a cute waitress at his university for his help with a deportation issue, Damien sees the chance to play the hero – now if only his father would take his calls! Like Ozon’s In the House, Looking for Hortense skewers middle-class pretension in an elegant fashion.

Dir: Haifaa Al-Mansour Cast: Reem Abdullah, Waad Mohammed Saudi Arabia 2012, 1hr 38mins, subtitled Back by popular demand, this superbly-acted Saudi Arabian film is reminiscent of 2012’s The Kid with a Bike, by turns charming and unexpectedly moving. Wadjda is a rebellious girl obsessed with buying a bicycle so she can beat local boy Abdullah in a race, but her mother is more concerned with persuading Wadjda’s father not to take another wife. In a country vilified for its attitude to women’s rights, that the film was made by a female director is a towering achievement.

Fletcher has lovingly crafted a heart-warming musical, with a great turn from the excellent Peter Mullan as you’ve never heard him before!

Sometimes in independent cinema things just fall into place: this macabre time of year; Everybody's Reading Festival telling us they had someone perfect to speak about Daphne du Maurier adaptations; and Curve's new show The Lovesong of Alfred J Hitchcock (27 Sep – 5 Oct). Surely the fates have aligned so we can put on this miniseason of five classic thrillers from the 'Master of Suspense'?

Made in 1953 during Hollywood’s first fling with 3D, the vogue for extra dimensions had finished by the time of its UK release so it was only ever seen here in 2D! Now digitally restored, Hitchcock’s stylish thriller sees ex Tennis-pro Tony (Ray Milland) plotting to kill his wife Margot (Grace Kelly).

Antipodes Layla Curtis 18 Oct – 21 Dec Cube gallery, cafebar and online Live webcams feeding images from opposite ends of the globe are the subject of this stunning new exhibition – part of Layla Curtis’s ongoing interactive online artwork Antipodes. Land is antipodal to land on only four per cent of the earth’s surface, but these distant twins offer rich ground for fascinating parallels and similarities. As far away from each other as it is possible to be, their day-fornight, summer/winter contrasts are palpable, often extreme, frequently possessing surprising affinities. The exhibition will feature an installation of live webcam feeds, alongside animations distilled from the streams of webcam footage recorded on the Antipodes website. Highlighting both the distance and the difference between us, Antipodes reminds us how technology is bringing us closer together. Phoenix is supporting the ongoing development of Antipodes by Layla Curtis, commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella in association with Spacex. Technical support by Cuttlefish. Phoenix Interact Labs is a new programme designed to encourage people to be creative with digital technology. Equipped with everything from DIY hardware kits to a state-of-the-art 3D printer, the labs will provide a space at Phoenix dedicated to learning, experimenting and making new things. Working with artists, technologists and audiences, the Labs will host workshops and talks, initiate new creative projects, conduct research and provide studio space for visiting practitioners. Led by Phoenix Associate Artist Sean Clark, Phoenix Interact Labs is a collaboration between Phoenix and technology company Cuttlefish Multimedia, supported by the Institute of Creative Technologies at De Montfort University.
