What makes the Phoenix cinema different? It’s a question our new customers often ask. This month, we thought we’d share our thoughts on the subject. If you’ve not seen a film at Phoenix, we think they’re all great reasons to give us a try! Phoenix is a charity - we’re publicly funded to bring great film and art to everybody. Any money we make gets reinvested to develop our service to you the public. We’re independent - we’re free to show films we think our customers will enjoy, not just those which will maximise profits. From smart Hollywood fare like The Dark Knight Rises p7, to world cinema treats such as Norway’s Jackpot p6 and home-grown gems like Swandown p7 - we screen many fantastic films which don’t get shown elsewhere. High-tech meets the human touch - the picture, sound quality and comfort in our two cinemas is state-of-theart, but we also believe in the personal service. Our ushers will make sure your viewing is not disturbed by others (and let you take alcoholic drinks into the cinema!), and we employ projectionists - not machines to ensure the sound and image is always perfect. We love film - our monthly programme of new film releases is just the start. We also run film festivals, seasons, quizzes, short courses and more. We’re good value. With standard ticket prices lower than elsewhere, and a Café Bar serving home-cooked food, a trip to the cinema at Phoenix is an affordable treat. Feel free to give us your thoughts on email at hello@phoenix.org.uk on Facebook or on Twitter. Front cover image: Anna Karenina (see page 4) Phoenix is a registered charity. The Imposter 15 Mon 10 – Thu 13 Sep Dir: Bart Layton Documentary UK 2012, 1hr 39mins In 1994, Nicholas Barclay disappeared from his home in Texas. Fast-forward three years and the boy reappears in a Spanish children’s home, claiming to have escaped his kidnappers. The family welcomes him back but suspicion grows over changes in the boy’s physical appearance. If this isn’t the Barclay’s missing child, then who is he and what happened to
Nicholas? Using real-life witnesses and reconstructions, The Imposter is a fascinating documentary that questions the nature of truth and reliability with every reel.

Dir: Peter Strickland Actors: Toby Jones, Tonia Sotiropoulou UK 2012, 1hr 32mins
Dir: Malik Bendjelloul Documentary Sweden / UK 2012, 1hr 26mins
Dir: James Marsh Actors: Andrea Riseborough, Clive Owen UK / Ireland 2012, 1hr 41mins
Described by The Daily Telegraph as “one of the most uplifting documentaries in recent memory”, first-time director Bendjelloul tells the story of singer songwriter Sixto Rodriguez. Hailed as the next Dylan in his 70s heyday, Rodriguez struggled to break through into the mainstream and slid into obscurity until his socially-engaged songs struck a chord with white liberals in Apartheid-era South Africa. An inspirational tale with a beautiful soundtrack.
After the successes of Project Nim and Man on Wire, James Marsh steps away from documentary for this deeply affecting film set in 1990s Belfast. Andrea Riseborough stars as Colette McVeigh, a young single mother captured during her failed terrorist bombing attack. Forced to become an MI5 informant by her handler Mac (Clive Owen) or risk losing her son, a nail-bitingly tense story unfolds as Colette must report back on her Republican brothers.
Strickland’s follow up to his awardwinning debut Katalin Varga picked up a nomination for Best British Film at the Edinburgh film festival. Toby Jones plays an expert soundeffect technician hired to work on an Italian horror film, whose tightly wound life unravels as reality begins to mirror the events on screen. Filmed in the ‘giallo’ style, it could almost have been made during the heyday of Italian shock cinema.

To Rome with Love 15 Fri 21 Sep – Thu 4 Oct Dir: Woody Allen Actors: Woody Allen, Jesse Eisenberg USA 2012, 1hr 51mins Hot on the heels of the magical Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen continues his European tour with this Roman adventure. Dir: David Bowers Actor: Zachary Gordon USA / Canada 2012, 1hr 34mins
Dir: Zal Batmanglij Actor: Brit Marling USA 2011, 1hr 25mins
From the pen of Jo Nesbø (who wrote this year’s brilliant Headhunters), here’s a treat for those who’ve developed a taste for Scandi-crime thrillers. When three ex-criminals and their factory foreman win the football pools, chaos ensues as the men realise their share of the money increases as the number of people in their syndicate goes down! Soon the bodies start to pile up - this is twisted, darkly hilarious fare.
The latest instalment in the hugely successful ‘Wimpy Kid’ series, based on Jeff Kinney’s best-selling children’s novels. 12 year old "wimpy kid" Greg Heffley plans to spend his summer holiday playing video games, but his dad insists on dragging him to a holiday park! A sweet, good natured comedy that captures the feeling of being young and restless; with enough pratfalls to make children in the audience giggle while their parents roll their eyes!
A journalist couple infiltrate a local cult in this intensely creepy film from the team behind last year’s haunting sci-fi Another Earth. Drawn deeper into the cult, the journalists begin to question themselves and each other as the line between investigation and indoctrination becomes blurred. Brit Marling is captivating as the cult’s ethereal leader Maggie, amassing followers and testing them with bizarre initiations. Thrilling stuff and a hard film to shake off.

Dir: Olivier Nakache, Eric Toledano Actors: François Cluzet, Omar Sy France 2011, 1hr 52mins
Dir: Miguel Gomes Actors: Teresa Madruga Portugal/ Germany 2012, 1hr 58mins
Maxime Godart stars as Nicolas, a boy living a blissful suburban life with his mother and father, spending time enjoying school and playing with his friends. Disaster strikes, however, when he overhears news that his mother is pregnant! Thinking the baby will replace him, Nicolas sets out to be the best son he can possibly be. This sweet and charming film from France is a real treat.
This wonderful feel-good movie about the friendship between Philippe, a wealthy Quadriplegic, and Driss, a man from the ghetto hired as his live-in carer, is a sensation. Smashing box-office records in its native France and picking up numerous festival awards along the way, it is now the most successful foreign-language film of all time. Starring François Cluzet (Tell No One).
A favourite with critics at film festivals this year, director Miguel Gomes brings us a delectable slice of art-house fare. Centering on the tragic love affair between Aurora and Gianluca and filled to the brim with the language of film, Tabu is a cinephile’s dream, awash with glorious celluloid textures. Nostalgic yet humorous, Gomes’ film is a meditation on yearning for the things we have lost.

Dir: Peter Yates / Nicolas Winding Refn Actors: Steve McQueen / Ryan Gosling USA 1968, 1hr 54mins / USA 2011, 1hr 40mins
Dir: Alfred Hitchcock / Carol Reed Actors: Robert Donat / Orson Welles UK 1935 1hr 26mins / UK 1949 1hr 44mins
The first week sees two different takes on the musclecar movie featuring two blond-haired, blue-eyed and very determined men. King-of-cool Steve McQueen lends his magnetic screen presence to Frank Bullitt, a tough as nails detective tasked with protecting a witness in a mob trial. Featuring THAT car-chase through the streets of San Francisco. We follow with Refn’s breakout hit film from 2011. Starring Ryan Gosling as The Driver this is a bone-crunching trip with a killer electro soundtrack.
In the second week we delve into two tales of intrigue and shadowy men doing shadowy deeds. We begin with Hitchcock’s adaptation of John Buchan’s spy story. Richard Hannay stumbles upon a chilling conspiracy and becomes both the pursued and the pursuer searching for the truth about the 39 Steps. Next up, post-war Vienna for Reed’s fable of love, disillusionment and moral corruption. The black market has the city in its grasp as pulp novelist Holly Martins searches the sewers for old friend Harry Lime.

Sun 23 Sep, 5.15pm Dir: The Coen Brothers / Martin McDonagh Actors: Gabriel Byrne / Colin Farrell USA 1990 1hr 50mins / UK 2008 1hr 47mins Our third double-bill features two very different approaches to the gangster genre bound together by comedy and violence. The Coen Brother’s most overlooked film, Miller’s Crossing may also be their best. A prohibition-era tale of warring mobs, with a cracking performance from Gabriel Byrne. Martin McDonagh’s hilarious comedy follows, with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two hit-men killing time in “boring” Bruges waiting for instructions from their gangland boss.
Sat 29 Sep, 4pm Dir: Jim Jarmusch / Luc Besson Actors: Forest Whitaker / Jean Reno France, Germany 1999 1hr 50mins / France 1994 2hrs 7mins Two of the most innovative directors offer their take on the hit-man movie in our final double-bill. Forest Whitaker stars as Ghost Dog, a philosophy-reading assassin who follows the code of the samurai. When his employers turn on him, Ghost Dog begins a bloody mission of vengeance. We finish with one of the best films ever made. Jean Reno is electric as “cleaner” Leon, whose act of saving a small girl leads to trouble.

In Search of Haydn U Sat 8 Sep, 6.15pm From the maker of In Search of Mozart and In Search of Beethoven (nominated for Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards), filmmaker Phil Grabsky returns with In Search of Haydn. Haydn is regarded as one of music’s greatest innovators - Mozart and Beethoven both looked up to him - yet in concert halls today he is often overshadowed in favour of his younger contemporaries. Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are featured composers in this year’s Leicester International Music Festival.
The film will be preceded by live footage from the red carpet premiere, followed by a Q&A live by satellite with James Murphy.

Secret Garden Martin Rieser and Andrew Hugill (De Montfort University) Mon 10 Sep – Mon 1 Oct Location: DMU Cube gallery at Phoenix Entry: Free A contemporary retelling of the Garden of Eden story through a ‘digital opera’ - featuring Adam and Eve as computer-generated avatars and the Secret Garden as an idyllic three-dimensional ‘augmented-reality’ world. In this rich interactive installation, viewers can follow the characters - as they examine their choices in a fallen world - via any one of eleven iPads mounted in the DMU Cube gallery. The viewer’s presence and their movements – along with those of other audience members - changes the musical score and the viewing of the actors. Combining music, dance, poetry and song, with technologies including motion-capture and computer gaming, this beautiful installation explores the potential of augmented-reality technology in art – where elements of an environment are ‘augmented’ by computermediated sensory input.
Exodus Martin Rieser Until Sun 30 Sep Continued from August, Exodus tells the stories of Asians expelled from Uganda by Idi Amin in 1972. Their tales of expulsion, migration and new lives in Leicester are told through an interactive artwork in the Phoenix Café Bar and an audio trail between Phoenix and New Walk Museum & Art Gallery. Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

The success of The King's Speech last year heralded fresh claims that the future was bright for British cinema, but persistent funding problems mean our films are made largely from more modest resources. This course looks at recent trends and many of the exciting new directors we can look forward to over the next few years, and also celebrates some of the treasures that have perhaps 'slipped under the radar'.
We examine the horror genre and how its films deal with our most primal fears: our nightmares, our vulnerabilities and fear of the unknown. Featuring film excerpts and theoretical study, tutor Blake Goddard will take you through the genre highlighting some of its most revered offspring such as The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, The Wickerman and most recently The Cabin in the Woods.
Learn how to take stunning portraits of friends, family and fascinating strangers. In this one day course, you’ll get to take pictures with models in both studio and natural lighting situations whilst tutor Zoe Coalburn will explain how to get the most out of your camera. Please book through Leicester Adult Skills and Learning Services on 0116 233 4343.
