2015 has been yet another exciting year for Streets Ahead, with the fantastic acquisition of the Babette’s range of Dollshouse miniature. Babette’s has a well known and respected range of products. Formally based in Germany, established in 1796, celebrating their 220th anniversary!

To make it easier for you all these items are marked We have labelled the Babette’s range with their logo.

We have introduced many new products in the Streets Ahead and Dollshouse Emporium ranges. Combined with Babette’s we can offer over 500 new items for 2015/2016. This has increased the 2016 catalogue to 260 pages, our largest ever!

Constructed out of plain MDF and wood giving you a blank canvas for your inspiration. All of the components required to complete the build of your dollshouse are included in the kit with the windows and the doors preassembled for you to paint as you wish and just slot into place.

The majority of houses are available in a prepainted ďŹ&#x201A;atpacked and wood in kit form with prepainted and assembled windows and doors. Walls just need screwing together (glue as well if desired). Some houses are offered in a plain MDF for personal nishing ee each ho se description for details. Edwardian period: 1901 – 1910/14

The Edwardian era is the period co ering the reign of ing dward VII 1901 – 1910 it is commonly also extended to include the years preceding the commencement of the First World War. In contrast from Victoria who had withdrawn from society in 1861 following the death of her husband Prince Albert, ing dward embraced the society and fashions of ontinental rope The fashions in home d cor changed dramatically from the preceding Victorian era, a new movement, Art Nouveau was embraced. Furniture, carpets and curtains were made of lighter material and colours, natural light was an important part of designing the layout of a room.

The Victorian era of British history covers the period of Queen Victoria’s reign which lasted from 20th June 1837 until her death on 22nd January 1901. In total she was on the throne for 63 years and 7 months. The ictorian era is well known for scienti c in ention and fashion. The Great Exhibition of 1851 showcased the greatest innovations and fashions of the century from all around the world. ome d cor in the ictorian era started simple and as the years went by during Victoria’s reign the fashions became more elaborate with heavy drapes, dark carpets and dark patterned wallpapers omes had many ornaments and assorted ceramic collectables.

Modern Era: 1945 – present

The modern era is anything post Second World War. There have been many exciting changes in the years after the war. In regard to home d cor we ha e passed thro gh the a stere s to the swinging sixties followed by the 70’s and the technology obsessed 1980s (think of the innovations in cooking with the microwave). We then pass to the 1990’s a decade of cheap consumer good and computers to the millennium and beyond. The era is hard to characterise because of the huge changes in the past 60 plus years. If you choose the Modern era as your dollshouse design inspiration you have a lot of exciting decorative choices to make. You can let your imagination run wild!!

Remember that you can choose an era for the whole of your dollshouse or you can mix and match periods in different rooms for example have a Modern kitchen Victorian bathroom a Georgian front door and an Edwardian sitting room. ou can accessorise furnish and populate with dolls from different eras. he choice for decoration is all yours.

Fairy Doors! New for 2015 we have a lovely range of Fairy Doors. A Fairy Door is a magical addition to any real home, you can have a door in one room of your house or several, it’s entirely up to you! Fairy Doors can be added to a skirting board or a wall in your home. Another idea is to place a door outside in a more natural setting. You can place the doors in your garden on tree trunks or attach to your garden fence, this will help to encourage your child’s curiosity towards the natural world. Lots of types of fairies can live behind the doors; your children can look forward to leaving little treats outside for visiting fairies such as the tooth fairy.

The belief in Fairies is common in many parts of the world. The term Fairy is commonly believed to be a European

speciﬁcally French word Faeire. The word derives from the Latin Fata meaning The Fates. The Fates refers to the belief in three European Mythological Goddesses. For hundreds of years people have traditionally left offerings of bread and milk in the woods when they believed Fairies were living. Despite the eventual transition from a Pagan to Christian society in Europe the belief in Fairies lives on. One manifestation of this is the creation of Fairy Doors and Fairy Gardens. Some of these installations are for fun and some are an expression of a sincere belief that we live side by side with Fairies. Recently Fairy Doors have moved into more urban settings, in homes and also shop doorways. Fairy Doors are an excellent way for you and your child to make up stories about the fairies living behind the doors. This will enable your child to develop storytelling skills and to fully unleash their imagination. Both adults and children can be caught up in the fantastic world of the fairies. We have various types of doors that are suitable for Fairy Doors; we have ready painted and plain bare wood doors. We also supply lots of accessories to bring the setting around your Fairy Door to life. Such as door knockers, knobs and letterboxes. You can use our plain wood doors if you want to have a blank canvas to create your own unique Fairy Door design. From this starting point you can paint the door and customise to your own design. The colour of the Fairy Door can be matched to the décor in your home or if you are placing the door outside you can match the colour to the natural

setting to camouﬂage to allow the fairies privacy when they are using the door.

Wallpapering Your Dollshouse When wallpapering your dollshouse it is important to decide the era in which your house will be decorated. Traditionally dollshouses are decorated in either a Victorian or Edwardian style but more recently people have been experimenting with different eras for example Tudor, Art Deco or going â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;all outâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Modern. You may choose to wallpaper all rooms in your dollshouse in one style or you can have modern rooms and Victorian rooms comfortably coexisting within the same house.

Many Victorian wallpapers were ostentatious and opulent with rich designs and often 3d effects. The colour scheme was very vibrant, reds, blues, yellows and purples. Edwardian styles are more relaxed than over the top Victorian styles. The colour schemes are more pale blues and yellows. If you decide to decorate all of your dollshouse or just some rooms in a Modern style you may wish to include a feature wall where you wall paper only one wall, this is a popular option for a bedroom or living room.

Electrics

Using real lights to illuminate your dollshouse can be a magical experience. You need to decide between electric lights on the 12 volt system using a transformer or LED lights using 3 volt batteries.

The 12 volt system: You have a choice between wiring your house by using a sort of “extension” multisocket system in each room or all wires leading to a block at the back of the house, see page 250. There is also a ﬂat wire copper tape system hiding the wire behind wallpaper or at the back of the house, see page 251. Once you have purchased a transformer the 12 volt lights work out to be more economical, so for the larger projects people favour the 12 volt system. The LED 3 volt battery system: Increasing in popularity, dollshouse LED lighting is an exciting development making illuminating your house much easier, no longer needing a transformer and trailing wires. Therefore the light can be placed wherever you like, inside or on the outside of the house, this feature is particularly important on table lamps and carriage lamps. LED lights can be more suitable for children and people who feel they may want to move their lights from room to room. Many of our LED lights have self adhesive pads and magnets which make this idea possible. These lights are powered by a long lasting battery (at least 72hours). Each lamp has its own inbuilt on/off switch.
