PREFACE International Photo Festival Leiden 2014 Without borders, without walls! After the successful first edition of the Photo Festival Leiden in 2013, we chose to broaden the scope and continue as International Photo Festival Leiden, featuring ‘New Photographers’. With a team of 20 enthusiastic volunteers we have been working for a year to create a festival that expresses our passion for new talent and photography. This lead to a beautiful open air exhibition, accompanied by a photo route with solo exhibitions of the selected photographers, presentations on an interactive digital screen and various interesting side events with local partners. Thanks to the specialist jury, the festival is proud to present 20 very talented and skilled new photographers from 10 different countries, who all are on the verge of big (international) careers. The new, international character of the festival is also demonstrated by the unique cooperation with Photoville New York, where our selection of photographers was on show from September 18-28 and was highly valued by a large audience. In exchange, a selection of emerging American

photographers is exhibited, together with a selection of Australian photographers from Head On Photography Festival in Sydney, at the Pieterskerkplein close to the refuge of the Pilgrim Fathers. Besides Photoville, the work of our photographers is also shown on large digital screens in Stockholm, Umeå and several Dutch cities. All of these local, national and international partnerships show that the International Photo Festival Leiden has started to play a key role in the discovery of new international photographers. Our goal for 2015 is to create a new kind of photography festival that can be enjoyed through digital techniques all over the world. All the people who cherish and care for art and culture, the sponsors, funds, the city of Leiden and above all the volunteers, have made sure that this year’s edition of the festival will be a great success and a place to enjoy for many.

Organisation The International Photo Festival Leiden is organized by the Foundation for Talented Photographers (Stichting Talentvolle Fotografen), founded by Hans Gillis and Pierre Luiten in 2013 as a follow-up for the large amateur photography exhibition they organized in Leiden in 2012.
About
Education
Following to the successful start of the Photo Festival Leiden in 2013, the second, International, edition takes place in the autumn of 2014. The International Photo Festival Leiden aims at providing a platform for young talented, professional photographers, by giving them a chance to present themselves to a broader audience. The city of Leiden, key to discovery, already features several art festivals discovering new talent, including the Leids Cabaret Festival, the Leiden International Film Festival (LIFF) and Beelden in Leiden, an outdoor statue festival. Until 2013 Leiden did not have a professional photo festival. Therefore, the Photo Festival Leiden was established, organised by the Foundation for Talented Photographers.
As part of the festival, IPL organised an educational programme for secondary schools, in cooperation with the Leiden Child Right Week. The topic is ‘Art and Freedom of Speech’.
The photographs, submitted by students of art academies or photography schools from around the world are judged by an international jury. 20 photographers are selected and of those, one overall winner is chosen, who receives an amount of €1.000 to be spent on the development of his or her photographic career. The photos of the selected 20 photographers are exhibited at eye-catching columns at squares in the Leiden city centre, thus creating a wall of fame unparalleled to other photo festivals in the Netherlands or even in Europe. Furthermore, all 20 selected contestants show a wider selection of their work in art galleries, shops and restaurants throughout Leiden, and via an Urban Screen also in several cities. Rather unique is the cooperation with Photoville New York and Head On Photo Festival in Sydney.
Members of the Board:
The aims of the International Photo Festival Leiden are: • To provide exposure for new international photography talents. • To provide a platform to photography for the main public. • To promote Leiden as Key to discovery in general.
Communication
The goal is to achieve the utmost effect with free publicity and social media. The support of the public is of course very important. Large real time screens in several cities and the cooperation with Photoville New York increase the international reach and the fame of the International Photo Festival and thereby offer the photographers a stage. Next to that, on a local level, a mobile exhibition (Photo Corso) is organised in cooperation with the Leiden Amateur Photography Club (LAFV).

Alfonso Almendros
(1981, Spain) Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny de València, Spain 2009 www.alfonsoalmendros.com
Alfonso is a Spanish photographer who studied art and photography in Italy, Hungary and Spain. He lives in Helsinki and taught photography in Managua, Nicaragua. His photographs are often autobiographical and about how certain incidents or events have shaped his life. The death of his father when he was just two years old was one of these events. Having no memories of his father and certain events shown in family pictures he created his own memories. This lead to the beautiful series Family Reflections. These dark, haunting, symbolic images, in which he portrayed his mother, brother and other relatives, reflect self-construction of the past, volatility of memories as well as the transience of life an and the passing of those we loved.

Former stylist Cindy Baar studied photography in Amsterdam and works as a freelance photographer and art director. She is also the publisher and creator of The Butter Space magazine (in collaboration with Martin Zuidema), described as a tribute to creativity and creative people. In The Butter Space she creates a staged, stylized world which is filled with mass-individualism and unique characters. These characters are photographed in an elaborate mix between styling, graphic design and humor in portrait photography that seems light hearted but at the same time is an encouragement to want to find out more about these peculiar humans and a celebration to one of a kind identities.

Renate Beense (1975, the Netherlands) Fotoacademie Amsterdam, the Netherlands 2014 www.renatebeense.nl
Renate Beense studied photography in Amsterdam and her work has been exhibited in the Netherlands, Buenos Aires and Tokyo. She says her family, the most important topic in her photography, taught her how important humor and laughter is when faced with tragedies. For the series Gewoon Pa (Just Dad) Renate documents her life with her chain smoking, poetry writing, newspaper collecting, naked sunbathing, social and anti-social dad who she admires but also finds annoying. Maybe that is because people always say how much alike they are. Her candid photographs are filled with humor but also reveal the special bond between a father and his daughter and the vulnerability of existence. When you get older keeping up appearances becomes less important, making your loved ones smile all the more so.

Maarten van den Bossche (1984, Belgium)
LUCA School of Arts, Brussels, Belgium 2013 www.maartenvandenbossche.com
Maarten van der Bossche studied photography in Belgium. His photography is a continuing search for collective and individual identities in which he mostly fictionalizes himself. Far from urbanized, easy accessible and dense places, he visualizes the symbolic emptiness of remote areas that move between real fiction and fictive reality. As a former theater stage builder, he creates out of numerous separate digital images new photographic worlds in which identity and reality become elastic entities. In the photographs presented here he envisions a journey through rough, vast, ‘hidden’ landscapes during which a close relationship is formed between a man and his sheep. But also mans need for odysseys, wandering through inaccessible terrain and the smallness of man in the vastness of the landscape. These highly skilled images are filled with details and a feast for the eyes for all those who pay attention.

The transition of life on the large open plains to life in the bustling, crowded city of Ulan-Bator involves lifestyle changes and adjustments and causes many transformations in Mongolian society. Lucile’s photographs are intimate and confronting showing the new way of living for these nomads while they try to hold on to their old traditions.

Eelkje Colmjon (1980, the Netherlands) Fotovakschool Amsterdam, the Netherlands 2013 www.EELK.nl
Eelkje Colmjon studied photography in Amsterdam and lives in Leiden. She currently works as a freelance photographer and has done commissioned work for several magazines and companies. In her work the human being and what makes us human plays a key role. She travels all over the globe to make intimate portraits of the people she meets. For the series Iran: Modern Faces, she travelled to Iran to photograph young Iranian women who bravely defy Islamic conservative laws by going out in public without veils, showing off their dyed hair and makeup. The nose job bandages have become status symbols and with 200.000 operations a year Iran performs the most aesthetic nose surgeries in the world. With these colorful portraits Eelkje shows how flamboyant and modern the young women of Iran really are, something that is rarely shown in the media.

‘I want to feel close, so close that there is no you & I’ After a receiving a BA in Sociology Ankit studied photography in Ooty, India. His work has been exhibited in India and Germany. Seeing himself as a citizen of the world, he lives a vagrant life and his photographs are deeply personal. They are hard to define, since they come from an inner space, but contain recurring motifs as fear, sex and death. They are dark, mysterious and evoke feelings of unease. There is no narrative; the viewer has to create his or her own story from life experiences and memories. This makes these images even more cryptic and unattainable.

In 2013 she exhibited as artist in residence in Seoul, South Korea. In her work Ted questions ideas of representation, imaging, standardizing and what we consider to be ‘normal’. this is not about you is a project in which Ted tries to visualize in three different ways the representation of her sister Pim, who has Down Syndrome: through her own eyes as a photographer, through the eyes of her sister Pim and through the eyes of their mother. With this series Ted creates a beautiful and honest document of her sister who leads her live as any other young girl. Intimate portraits combined with snapshots and selfies create a contemporary view on people with Down Syndrome and challenge preconceived stereotypical ideas.

Anne Paternotte
(1990, the Netherlands) Koning Willem 1 College Den Bosch, the Netherlands 2011 www.annepaternotte.com
Anne studied media, art and photography and has done commissioned film and photography work for several large companies. In her series Streets of Insomnia she visualizes the many sleepless nights she had after moving to the ChassÊpark in Breda. During warm summer nights, suffering from insomnia, Anne frequently makes midnight walks through the park to photograph her neighborhood. Deserted streets, dark office buildings, empty playgrounds are sparsely illuminated by streetlights and the early, misty dawn of summer. This creates a dreamlike and surreal atmosphere familiar to those who exhaustingly wander the streets at night. The night seems peaceful and tranquil in Anne’s striking photographs creating an unusual contrast with the harsh reality of bright daylight that is to come.

Joris van der Ploeg (1989, The Netherlands) Fotoacademie, Amsterdam, The Netherlands 2014 www.jorisvanderploeg.com
Joris studied photography in Amsterdam and has had several exhibitions and publications in the Netherlands. He photographs young girls in transition to womanhood when they are complex, innocent and naive; aspects that disappear as they grow up. In his photographs he looks for the natural strength and beauty of the girl. Whether they are insecure or selfconscious, he treats them with the highest regards. This results in images that are endearing and tender but also powerful and confronting. They remind us of the many stages of puberty and early adulthood where budding sexuality, conflicting emotions and intense insecurities transform the lives of young girls. Referencing classical paintings Joris creates beautiful multilayered images in the tradition of fine art photography.

Raimondas Pocius (1990, Lithuania)
Vilnius College of Technologies and Design, Vilnius, Lithuania 2012 www.raypocius.com
Photographer Raimondas Pocius studied visual arts in Vilnus, Lithuania and currently studies at the University of Leiden. His work has been published and exhibited in Lithuania and abroad. The Checkpoint Project is an interactive installation used in various public events since 2012. The door, which takes a photo of the one pressing a doorbell, was continually moved around pubs, clubs, galleries and events to chronologically document the active social class and register the change of emotions and participants during the night. With the idea that the people make the party, and not the location, this project eliminates the surroundings leaving only the attendants of the events in front of the camera. Raimondas eliminates furthermore the control the photographer usually has over his subjects. This results in interesting images of the subjects in their most natural state that can be compared to documentary photography - albeit with a wink.

(1969, Germany) Fotoacademie Amsterdam, the Netherlands 2011 www.katharinapohlmann.com
Former camerawoman and video artist Katharina Pöhlmann recently studied photography in Amsterdam and has had numerous exhibitions and publications throughout Europe. In her photographs she visualizes emptiness and abandonment, traces of human presence, or rather absence. What remains when people leave? What becomes visible in the emptiness? These empty streets, parks, swimming pools and hotel rooms, areas we usually associate with lively crowds and in our minds do not exist without people, make us feel like voyeurs. We are peeping Toms who secretly look at the nakedness these images reveal. Hold your breath; do not disturb the tranquility; that is what these images tell the viewer. Stand still and do not make a sound! One has to wonder whether these places are not so much more beautiful without the presence of noisy, busy human beings.

Ulrike Schmitz
(1975, Germany) Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie, Berlin, Germany 2012 www.ulrike-schmitz.com
German photographer Ulrike Schmitz studied photography in Berlin and her work has been shown in exhibitions throughout Europe. In her work Ulrike tries to visualize and understand historical circumstances as well as the implications these circumstances have on the individual. After the Second World War thousands of German engineers were forcibly relocated to the Stalinist Soviet Union, Ulrike’s family was among them. She went back in search of their memories but instead found her own reality, possessing its own truth and understanding of the past. For her series Museum of your Memory she photographed the town her family was send to (Podberezye) and combined these with film stills from Russian propaganda movies from the Stalinist era. Although the resulting story refers to the past, it remains distinct from it. The images are neither a copy of reality nor evidence of the past but rather an interpretation of Ulrike’s memories and that of her family.

Dutch photographer Julie van der Vaart studied photography in Belgium and is currently studying to be a visual art teacher. She has had numerous group and solo exhibitions as well as publications in the Netherlands and Belgium. The series Le Sentiment De L’Éphémère is a personal project that revolves around the realization that nothing is forever. The images show the human desire to keep special and precious moments close by ‘capturing’ them in a photograph. As soon as the photograph is taken, the moment is gone and part of history forever, never to be experienced again. Julie catches these moments in beautiful black and white photographs. She freezes time and sets it in amber, creating a tangible memory for herself and a moment of contemplation for the viewer.

(1987, Czech Republic) Institute of Creative Photography, Opava, Czech Republic, 2014 www.imrichveber.com
Documentary photographer Imrich Veber studied art and photography in the Czech Republic where he currently lives and works. His photography has been published in several books and exhibited throughout Europe. For the series NH20 Imrich photographed the inhabitants of the small village Nové Heřminovy. The government of the Czech Republic has decided to build a dam that will cause the valley to flood and submerge the village. Meanwhile, villagers go on with their lives: they go to work, come home, spend time with family and friends and celebrate annual events. Nobody knows exactly when the dam will be build and for how long they are to remain in their childhood homes. Imrich’s photographs give us an interesting and realistic glimpse into the rural live of this Eastern European country, their social conditions and the absurdity of government decisions these people have to deal with.

Belgian photographer Robin Vercauteren studied photography at Narafi in Brussels. Her work shows great technical skill and craftsmanship. For the series Nefelibata (pronunciation | ne-feIE-‘ba-ta: (n.) lit. “cloudwalker”; one who lives in the clouds of their own imagination or dreams) Robin photographed spaces where she intuitively placed objects to challenge the purpose and preconceived ideas of the space. The use of real objects to redefine space (none of the objects are Photoshoped into the image) and the intricate mix between realism and fiction, creates a dualism that might easily deceive the viewer. But, in Robin’s photographs the viewer is given ample room to create his or her own vision and interpretation on the photographed spaces. Anyone can become a cloudwalker, just follow you imagination.

Henri Verhoef
(1990, the Netherlands) Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, the Netherlands 2014 www.henriverhoef.com
Henri Verhoef studied photography in The Hague and has been commissioned by several (fashion) magazines and blogs. In his series Masquerades / Real Men Create Rivers Themselves he questions the division of the world into men and women to which we connect most of our abilities and behavioral characteristics. This division is self constructed and does not really exist. When the masks are removed every human being, man or woman, feels the same pain and emotions. In his captivating portraits he recreates ideals of manhood in the form of cowboys, bikers, soldiers and rebels accompanied by man’s best friend, the dog, forming icons of bravery and strength. However, Henri challenges these ideals by photographing the men crying, creating vulnerable moments of rare sensitivity. Intriguingly, this does not interfere with their masculinity, but makes them seem more human instead. Days of melancholy, 2014
Exhibition: Hooglandse Kerkgracht Boekhandel Kooyker
Tatiana Vinogradova (1979, Russia) Photodepartment Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia 2013 www.tatianavinogradova.com
Tatiana studied documentary photography in St Petersburg in Russia and her work has been published in several noteworthy photography magazines. In her work she is not afraid to address difficult topics under heavy discussion in her home country. Days of Melancholy is a series of portraits that visualizes the lives of gay people in Russia. 74% of the people in Russia said in 2013 that homosexuality is unacceptable in society, of which 16% said gay people should be isolated from society and 5% even says they should be put down. The adoption of the nation-wide law banning “gay propaganda” has driven the gay community underground and in the shadows. Tatiana photographed gay men in the shadows and somber shades, the opposite of the rainbow colored expressions this community is familiar with. Her portraits are intimate and poetic. They depict internal beauty, something she finds more important them the differences that are created by ignorant people.
“My mother’s reaction was “it is a teenage thing, you’ll grow out of it, you simply haven’t met the right girl yet.” The most ridiculous thing is I was already 26.”

“When my parents lived together, they wanted to build an extension, bought the dump-truck of sand and delivered it to our yard. Then they got divorced, but the sand still remained lying in the yard. So I had a sandbox, and all my friends always hung around with me.”
“Remember the magazine Rovesnik? Every month me and my mom went to Soyuzpechat* kiosk. And once Brad Pitt was on the cover. Actually, I don’t like Brad Pitt... Anyway, mom bought me the magazine, and I took and kissed the cover for some reason. I can’t explain why I did it. But mom was perplexed.” *Soyuzpechat is a network of press kiosks existing in USSR.
“I am the only son of my parents. If I tell them that I am gay, I will get nothing for myself, but they will be absolutely devastated. All sense of their life... just bang! … it will get rotten.”

Eva Voutsaki
(1978, Greece) University of Brighton, England 2009 www.evavoutsaki.com
Greek photographer Eva Voutsaki studied photography in England, where she still lives and works as an educator on Subjective Photography and autobiographical storytelling. Her work focusses on mythology, memory, fantasy and the unconscious. The series Traces Within shows images from an anecdote diary filled with spontaneous and accidental photographs that enable the viewer to travel smoothly and secretly into his own memories. Seascapes under the full moon, animals, lonely women and men are transformed into a stream of dislocated and ambiguous images. Her enigmatic images create short, mysterious narratives without beginning or end. But most of all they mesmerize the viewer into drifting away in one own thoughts, dreams and fantasies.
