www.photographyworlds.comCanon PowerShot G15 is the latest model in Canon’s popular PowerShot G series now. Canon has issued an update to its PowerShot C series on quite a dependable basis for a number of years now. However, the manufacturer hasn’t always opted to simply upgrade the specs each time, with various features mysteriously skipping a generation here and there. RAW mode disappeared from view cn the G7 in 2006, orly to reappear on the G9 a year later. The resolution of the sensor had climbed to a fairly substantial 14.7MP by the time of the G10 in 2008, before Canon elected to drop back to 10MP for the Gil in 2009.

The G15 sees the resolution pick back up again – to 12.1MP – tut the articulated, vari-angle LCD screen on otter with the Gil and G12 models has gone walkabout. This will come as a disappointment to many, so on paper at least, putting your G12 on eEay and ordering a G15 isn’t necessarily the obvicus step. The fact that the LCD isn’t even a touch screen may also be an off-putting design decision for some people. But the G15 has plenty of positives on offer. The most instantly appealing feature is the new fl.8-2.8 lens, which improves quite significantly on the f2.8-f4.5 lens that was found on the G12. The 5x optical zoom capability stays the same, offering a focal length range equiva ent to 28-140nm. According to Canon, the G15?s lens has been created using rew highly refractive glass with “a unique multiple coating engineered to handle specific wavelengths of light at the nanometre scale.” We took this to mean that, in layman’s terms. Canon thinks that this is a pretty good lens, so we made sure to keep a keen eye on the results.

Leaving out the articulated LCD helps contribute to a body that’s slightly more svelte than its predecessor; when you pick the camera up, the size shape and weight of the G15 all feel perfectly ludged. It’s got an attractively solid and dependable feel to it, but you could easily carry it around all day without once feeling weighed down. Equally, the camera’s dials and buttons are all right on the money for a camera at this price point, with nothing that feels loose or overtly cheap – a factor that can occasionally let advanced conpact cameras down.

A comprehensive mode dial, traditional exposure compensation dial and well lad-out buttons are the order of tie day. resulting in an uncluttered camera that’s beautifully simple and pleasurable to use. The camera’s menu system is equally to the point, and you can essentially just pio However, while it’s possibe to fine-tune how oplour images look in-camera, there’s no way of adjusting black- and-white captures. This means that producing a perfect monochrome image straigh: out of the camera is difficult, which for a camera so well-suited to st’eet photography and reportage, is a bit of a shame. There’s plenty cf automation on offer via Special Scene Mode and Creative Fi ters Mode (both accessed via the mode dial) but exposure mode control is lost while shooting in either of these modes, with the camera switchirg to full auto. “When you pick the camera up, the size, shape and weight all feel perfectly judged”

Dynamic Range correction – which can be set to Off. Auto. 200% or 400% – is designed to allow the user to protect image highlights on the fly. In our tests, we did find that a degree of highlight detail is lost in scenes with a moderate to high EV range when this feature is turned off. so it’s certainly a good idea to keep this in mind, particularly when capturing JPEGs.

The G15 produces clean, detailed shots with plenty of control via well-laid-out buttons and a pleasing interface

The 12. IMP 1/1.7? Caron CMOS sensor produces excellent results, admirably supported by the much- improved lens that Canon has included. Colours are reproduced very well and the high ISO noise reduction (which can’t be switched off. only adjusted) in the G15 is capable of controlling both colour and luminance noise most impressively. The close focusing is also a real plus point, allowing you to focus as close as lcm to your subject. Focusing, incidentally, is fast and reliable, quick to find focus with hunting rarely an issue. Indeed, the camera is very responsive in general. Technically, the G15 has an optical viewfinder. However, whether anyone who buys the camera will ever actually use the viewfinder is open to debate. To say that the viewfinder is awkward, small and hampered by distortion is a definite understatement. In reality, you’ll be restricted to using the camera’s LCD screen 100 per cent of the time. Fortunately, the 920k-dot resolution of the PureColor IIG screen is up to the job. Overall, this is a worthy addition to the PowerShot G series camera, but it’s undeniably something of a mixed bag. When compared to the G12. it’s a case of win some, lose some. For some G12 owners, the G15 will represent a generally strong upgrade. For others, this new model may not seem like a worthwhile investment. Canon PowerShot G15 Features Full HD 1080p Video with a Dedicated Movie Button

the new features most likely to appeal to G12 owners. The captured video is very vivid and realistic, and Canon’s Fine Detail Movie Processing achieves beautiful videos with high resolution processing. For greater image clarity and sharp portrayalit can records approximately 4x the amount of information during video shooting. The full range of the zoom in movie mode can be use freely, while sound is recorded in stereo. By connecting the camera to the TV with an optional HDMI cable, you can view and share the video on an HDTV immediately.

Fast and Powerful f/1.8 (W) – f/2.8 (T) Lens

Another attractive enhancement on offer is the fast f/1.8 (W) – f/2.8 (T) Lens, which presents a significant improvement on the f2.8-f4.5 lens offered by the G12. With this Wide-Angle lens will gives your images a distinctive sweep and grandeur, capturing landscapes, wide groups of people, cityscapes and tall buildings with ease. Even in low light this large f/1.8–2.8 aperture can creating beautiful portraits, soft background blur, and amazing Canon optical technology delivers a high performance lens enabling incredible images.

Perfectly Formed The size and weight of the G15 are both ideal – although these ergonomic benefits come at the expense of an articulated LCD, which is bad news. Fine Focusing Whith Canon’s latest advancement in AF technology
