Foreword

I do admire PhotoVoice and have been delighted to offer my support over the last few years. I urge you to do the same by giving time and attention to this splendid auction of exciting contemporary photographs, and hopefully by taking an active part in competing for the works that particularly appeal to you. The prints committed so generously for this event represent a fascinating range of subject matter, with surely something to inspire each of you; and the list of donors is a roll-call of some distinction that embraces long-established masters and strong young talents. PhotoVoice has, for over a decade now, brought light into the lives of people all over the world who face daunting daily challenges just to survive, let alone to live with a degree of security and dignity. The PhotoVoice team has done this through involving them in photography, providing a means to learn new skills and to develop a positive sense of individual and group identity. The charity has developed real momentum in many communities across the globe; but constant support is required in order to maintain that momentum. About PhotoVoice

PhotoVoice is an award-winning international charity and a leading organisation in the field of participatory photography. Our projects enable those who are traditionally the subjects of photographs to become their creators. Through photography, participants find the confidence to speak out about their challenges, concerns, hopes and fears. PhotoVoice’s vision is for a world in which no one is denied the opportunity to speak out and be heard. PhotoVoice’s mission is to build skills within marginalised communities using innovative participatory photography and digital storytelling methods, so that they have the opportunity to represent themselves and create tools for advocacy and communications to achieve positive social change. PhotoVoice’s partners are involved in every project – be they an international NGO or a local community organisation. We work in the UK and internationally, with a wide range of people who are marginalised, at risk and discriminated against, because of factors including poverty, ethnicity, age, health, disability and HIV status. We provide a platform for these groups to show their work and advocate for change.

Why photography? Photography is a highly flexible tool that crosses cultural and linguistic barriers and can be adapted to all abilities. Its power lies in its dual role as an art form and as a means to record facts. It provides an accessible way to define realities, communicate perspectives and raise awareness of important social and global issues. The relative low cost of photography and ease of dissemination encourage sharing and increase the potential to generate dialogue and discussion.

PhotoVoice Projects

Here is a taste of some of our recent projects. Our thanks to all of our project partners, facilitators and volunteers. UK Lookout London involved groups of young people living in supported housing in Homerton and Walthamstow, who produced photographs that shared their perspectives and experiences of gangs and knife crime. A London-wide poster and postcard campaign, alongside exhibitions in Hackney and Wandsworth, allowed these young people to counter the one-sided media representation of young people as being to blame for the issues rather than being affected by them. Through the Aiming High project, young disabled people in Macclesfield were equipped with digital photography skills and supported to use these to feed back to the Council about their experience of the Aiming High for Disabled Children 2011 programme of short break activities. Rights Cameras Action is a UK-wide project through which young people explore the relevance and importance of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in their lives. An online resource and booklet, launched to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the UK signing up to the UNCRC, will help to engage more young people in this important subject, and to bring the voices of young people into campaigns highlighting where the government needs to do more to fulfil its obligations under UNCRC. Our Bursary scheme, the John Kobal New Work Award, supports previous project participants to further develop as photographers, and to pursue personal projects. This year PhotoVoice supported a set of digital photography workshops with mental health service users in Hastings, run by former participant Tim Rowan, among others.

International The See it Our Way project supported groups of young people in Albania, Armenia, Lebanon, Romania and Pakistan, to document the risks and root causes of child trafficking in their communities. The training has enabled these at-risk young people to consider the issues more carefully themselves, while playing an active role in informing and guiding peers in their communities who are also at risk of falling prey to traffickers. Their work is informing future prevention and campaign activities by local World Vision teams and partners. The Eyes of Youth project worked with groups of young people in three deprived communities in Kurbin, Albania, in order to generate images that explored social issues faced by residents. The workshops culminated in community engagement events based around exhibitions of the work, aiming to generate discussion and inspire action from the wider community. By running photography workshops with nomadic pastoralist children in the Somali Region of Ethiopia, we supported them to produce a body of work that will help Save the Children UK to advocate on the issue of access to education for pastoralist children. Coming up… Lookout UK – expanding upon the Lookout London project, we will run similar workshops with young people in other cities around the UK, promoting positive action by young people to become part of the solution to these social issues. Speaking Out – in partnership with the National Working Group, we will work with groups of sexually exploited children and young people across the UK and develop a resource for the use of participatory photography in this area. Winds of Change – we will work with communities whose lives are already being affected by climate change to document their situation for local and international campaigns to recognise the rights of those displaced or impoverished by climate change.

The 84 prints in the auction are divided into a live auction of 32 lots and a silent auction of 52 lots. If you would like to bid on any lot you will need to register first. Live Auction (Lots 1-32) To register for the live auction please complete and return the enclosed Auction Registration form. You will be allocated a paddle number on the night. Absentee bids and telephone bidding can be arranged should you be unable to attend the Auction. Silent Auction (Lots 33-84) Silent auction bidding will be open from midday on 14th November, closing at 9.30pm on 22nd November 2011. This year we are taking bids for the silent auction by mobile phone and you can register in one of the following ways: 1. Complete and return the enclosed Auction Registration form. Once we have confirmed your registration, you will receive a text to let you know when you can start bidding. 2. From the 14th Novermber, select the lot you would like to bid for and text LOT, then the lot number followed by a space and the amount you wish to bid in pounds to 88850 (e.g. LOT 33 500). We will then call you to finalise your registration and payment details. Standard network charges apply. You will not be charged for texts you receive from us. Pricing Guidelines The pricing guide is intended to give a realistic point from which to start bidding, and does not necessarily represent the full potential value of the photographs. Many of the photographs are rarely or never available for sale and so, in some cases, it is difficult to accurately predict their eventual prices. Each lot has been marked to indicate its approximate value as shown in the key. Please note that a charge of £40 will be added to each lot to cover the framing and packaging costs incurred by PhotoVoice.

Marc Riboud Fenêtres d’antiquaire, Pékin, 1965 In Beijing, through an antique dealer’s shop window. Silver print, 11.8” x 15.7” Signed recto and stamped verso, printed 2011 Marc Riboud was born in 1923 in Lyon. In 1953 he published his famous ‘Eiffel Tower’s painter’ photograph in Life magazine and joined Magnum Agency after meeting Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa. In 1955, he crossed the Middle East and Afghanistan to reach India before heading to China in 1957. After three months in USSR, he followed the independence movement in Algeria and Western Africa. Between 1968 and 1969 he was one of the few photographers allowed to travel in North and South Vietnam. In 1976 he became president of Magnum and resigned three years later. Since the 1980s he has continued travelling at his own tempo.

Philip Jones Griffiths courtesy of The Philip Jones Griffiths Foundation Vietnam, 1967 In an attempt to impose the American value system on the Vietnamese, villagers were taught by US Marines how to wash their children, made to watch Disney films on hygiene, had their teeth pulled, were given real toilets with seats, and were introduced to filter tips. Fibre based print, 16” x 20” Foundation stamp, printed 2011 Philip Jones Griffiths was born in Wales. He photographed Vietnam from 1966 to 1971 and his book on the war, Vietnam Inc., crystallized public opinion and gave form to Western misgivings about American involvement in Vietnam. An associate member of Magnum since 1966, Griffiths became a member in 1971. In 1980, Griffiths moved to New York to assume the presidency of Magnum, a post he held for a record five years.

Sarah Moon Barrio Chino, 1992 Silver gelatin, fibre based print, 11.8” x 15.7” Limited edition 2/20, signed verso and stamped, printed 1998 Sarah Moon’s fantastical photography is about texture, surface, seeing, believing, dreaming. After almost 30 years of image-making, she has become a legend in her own lifetime. Working extensively in photography and film, Sarah has been exhibiting worldwide since 1982. She has published over a dozen books and is also a celebrated filmmaker. Some of her distinctions and honours include the Clio Award, the Lion D’Or for two consecutive years, Grand Prix de la Photographie and the American Society of Media Photographer’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Photography. PhotoVoice is honoured to have Sarah as a Patron.

David Hurn / Magnum Photos Sheep Eppynt, 1973 G.B. WALES. MYNYDD. The military artillery range. Sheep shelter from the rain. Archival pigment print, 14” x 11” Signed recto and verso, printed 2009 David Hurn was born in 1934, in Surrey, England. David is a self taught photographer who began his career in 1955 as an assistant at the Reflex Agency. While a freelance photographer, he gained his reputation with his reportage of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. He became a full Member of Magnum Photos in 1967 and in 1973 he set up the School of Documentary Photography in Newport, Wales.

Herb Ritts courtesy of The Herb Ritts Foundation Stina and Cordula, Hollywood 1989 Silver gelatin print, 14” x 11” Limited edition 1/25, signed verso, printed 1989 Herb Ritts began his photographic career in the late 1970s, and quickly gained an international reputation as a master of fine art and commercial photography. In addition to producing memorable portraits and timely editorial fashion layouts, he also created many successful advertising campaigns. Herb also directed numerous influential and award-winning music videos and commercials. His fine art photography has been the subject of museum and gallery exhibitions worldwide, with his works residing in many significant public and private collections. Herb Ritts passed away on December 26th 2002, due to complications from HIV/AIDS.

John Swannell Chair Series no 3, 1991 Platinum print, 22” x 29” Limited edition 11/25, signed recto and stamped verso, printed 2007 John Swannell was born in 1946. John has published five monographs: Fine Lines (1982), Naked Landscape (1986), Twenty Years On (1996), I’m Still Standing (2002) and Nudes 1978-2006 (2006). He has had numerous exhibitions in the UK and New York including a show of his portraits at the National Port Chris Beetles Gallery, London in 2007 and the first showing of his colour landscapes at Hoopers Gallery, London in 2008. He has photographs in the permanent collections of The National Portrait Gallery (currently showing), the Victoria & Albert Museum and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Simon Roberts West Wittering Beach, Chichester, West Sussex, 2008 From the series ‘We English’. Digital C-Type print on Fuji Crystal Archive paper, 20” x 24” Limited edition 1/7, signed with certificate of authenticity, printed 2008 Simon Roberts’ photographs are represented in major public collections, including the Deutsche Börse Art Collection and Wilson Centre for Photography. He has received several awards including the Vic Odden Award from the Royal Photographic Society - offered for a notable achievement in the art of photography by a British photographer, a National Media Museum Bursary Award and was most recently commissioned as the official Election Artist by the House of Commons Works of Art Committee (2010) to produce a record of the UK General Election. He has published two monographs, Motherland (Chris Boot, 2007) and We English (Chris Boot, 2009). 8

Eve Arnold / Magnum Photos Marilyn Monroe Resting, 1955 USA. Illinois. Bement. Silver gelatin, fibre based print, 16” x 20” Signed verso, printed 2010 Eve Arnold was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Russian immigrant parents. Arnold joined Magnum Photos in 1951 and became a full member in 1957. She is a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and in 1995 was also elected Master Photographer – the world’s most prestigious photographic honour – by New York’s International Center of Photography (ICP).

The long corded coat is designed to protect the breed from the harsh winters of the Hungarian plain. The shot was made by getting the dog to run and jump towards its owner, with the camera between the owner’s legs. Digital C-Type print, Dibond Mounted, 20” x 34” Limited Edition 10/32, signed recto with signed certificate of authenticity, printed 2010 Tim Flach was born in London, where he studied Photography and Painted Structures at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (1982–1983). Tim Flach is recognized internationally for his highly conceptual images of animals, which have been shown in galleries and museums around the world, as well as received numerous awards. His books Equus (Abrams, 2008) and Dogs Gods (Abrams 2010) are critically acclaimed and bestsellers. 11

Veronica Bailey Olympus, Modern Myths Series 2010 Modern Myths 2010, Veronica Bailey’s latest body of work, is a meditative exercise focusing upon traditional yet increasingly threatened forms of human communication and knowledge dissemination. Olympus, features The Financial Times newspaper dated September 11th 2001. Veronica Bailey was born in London 1965, and graduated from an MA course at Central St Martins in 2003. Her 2 Willow Road Series 2003 won the Jerwood Photography Award. She worked on Postscript in 2005, a series that documents an archive of letters and telegrams (1937 –1945) written by Lee Miller and Roland Penrose. Her series Modern Myths 2010 features newspapers and the mythical relationship between human nature, war, money and power in the media. 12

Allan Jenkins / HackelBury Fine Art Conkers, September 2009 Still life study of Conkers, part of a collection ‘Studies of Nature’, based on seasonal changes and growth, inspired by mood, atmosphere, shape and form. Archival pigment print, 27” x 23” Limited edition 3/25, signed verso, printed July 2011 Allan Jenkins is a London based fine art photographer, who combines his interests in portraiture and still life photography. His work is influenced by pictorialism and vintage photographic styles, and his images strive to reflect upon the essence of the world around him. Jenkins’s work has been exhibited in museums, galleries and private collections around the world. His images have been widely published in art books and magazines ranging from Ralph Lauren, BBC, Ikea and Condé Nast.

Brian Griffin Urban Pollution, Rotherhithe, London, 1987 Archival pigment print, 18” x 18” Limited edition 3/10, signed verso, printed 2007 Brian Griffin was born in Birmingham, United Kingdom, in 1948, and studied Photography at Manchester Polytechnic from 1969 to 1972. The Guardian named him Photographer of the Decade in 1989, and his book ‘Work’ was pronounced “Best Photo Book in The World 1991” at the Barcelona Primavera. He launched ‘Road to 2012’ at the National Portrait Gallery, a project for the London Olympics.

David Redfern The Beatles, Abbey Road Studios, 25 June 1967 The year that changed my life was 1967. It all started on June 25th at the Abbey Road studios where The Beatles were being filmed recording ‘All You Need is Love’. This was the first major world satellite television link to twenty-six countries with an estimated audience of four hundred million. Kodak Duratrans, Lightbox, 20” x 24” Limited Edition 1/10, 2011 David Redfern began his career in the twilight jazz clubs of London in the early 1960’s, risking his one and only camera amongst the jiving teenage crowds. By day David began photographing TV shows like ‘Ready Steady Go’ and ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’, resulting in now classic shots of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Dusty Springfield. David sold Redferns Music Picture Library to Getty Images in December 2009.

David Chancellor / INSTITUTE Huntress with Buck, from the series Hunters, July 2010 C-Type print, hand printed, 27” x 32” Limited edition 2/5, embossed with photographers stamp recto, printed 2010 David Chancellor studied photography at the Kent Institute of Art and Design, after an unfulfilling early career in banking. He is currently based in Cape Town, South Africa and travels extensively shooting documentary reportage and portraiture. Named Nikon Photographer of the Year three times, he received a World Press Photo in 2010 for 'Elephant Story' from the series 'Hunters'. A study of his wife and son was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery London and in 2010 he won the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize with 'Huntress with Buck'. In 2011 he was shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Awards.

Tom Hunter The Anthropologist, 1997 From the series ‘Persons Unknown’ Unique Ciberchrome print, 30” x 25” Signed verso, printed 2000 Tom Hunter graduated from the London College of Printing in 1994 with a BA First Class Honours. He took his MA at the Royal College of Art, London in 1997, where he created a series of photographs evoking Vermeer’s paintings title ‘Persons Unknown’. In 1998, Hunter won the John Kobal Photographic Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery and in 2006 was the first artist to have a photography show at the National Gallery. Hunter’s work is often particular, but not exclusive, to his community and neighbourhood’s of East London. He has exhibited work both nationally and internationally, in solo and group shows. He currently lives and works in London.

Peter Marlow / Magnum Photos Gloucester Cathedral, 2010 From Peter Marlow’s current project to photograph the naves of all 42 of England’s cathedrals. This is a unique object and is the first time any images from the project have been shown in public. Fuji Instant “Polaroid”, 5” x 4” Unique reference print, signed on verso, printed 2010 Peter Marlow is one of Britain’s leading photojournalists, whose work has appeared in most of the world’s major magazines. Born in England in 1952, Marlow joined Magnum Photos in 1980, becoming a full member in 1986. Despite travelling widely in his early career, Marlow's major projects have often been concerned with contemporary British life. In recent years, Marlow has worked more extensively in colour and concentrated on his exploration of the physical and personal landscape.

Russell Glenister / Courtesy of Pocketstock Ltd Cricket, India, 2008 Boys playing cricket, near Udaipur, Rajasthan, India C-Type print, 16.5” x 24” Limited edition 1/12, signed verso, printed 2011 Russell Glenister is a builder of collections as well as a photographer of note. He is heavily involved in two ventures; the first building on validated photographic content by photographers of significant repute and second, at the other spectrum, community driven supply - Contrast Blue and Pocketstock Ltd respectively. These projects are likely to build on Russell’s previous successes at shooting, producing and curating significant collections of images for distribution and sale. Russell also founded, developed and sold image100 to Bill Gate’s Corbis.

Carefully observed, his cityscapes explore the massive urbanization of the developing world. Digital Fibre Museum Bareyte print, 30” x 45” Limited edition artist proof 1/10, signed verso, printed 2010 Marcus Lyons was born and raised in rural Britain, and read Political Science at university and Leadership at Harvard Business School. He began his working life with Amnesty International in Latin America, where he began his exploration of the issues surrounding development and urbanisation. His art and books are held in both private and international collections including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Arts Council of Great Britain. His work has been exhibited in over 80 shows across the globe. 20

Carlos Gutierrez / Reuters Puyehue-Cordon Caulle chain, dormant for decades, erupts in south-central Chile, belching ash over 6 miles (10 km) into the sky. June 5, 2011. Digital C-Type print, 12” x 16”, printed September 2011 Carlos Fernando Gutierrez was born in 1975 in Puerto Varas, in Chile’s Patagonia region, and studied graphic design and photography. He works as a freelance photographer, and has had his work published in National Geographic, Newsweek, Life, and Procesos magazine, among others. He has worked for Reuters during the eruptions of both the Chaiten and Puyehue volcanoes. He won the World Press Nature prize in 2009 for a photo of the Chaiten volcano in eruption. He is currently working on different personal projects, as well as the creation of a photography museum in his city of birth.

Tony McGee Midnight Swan, May 2011 This photograph was taken just after midnight on a private estate in England and is part of a forthcoming book Swans and I Dream. Archival pigment, 20” x 24” Limited edition 1/10, signed recto, printed 2011 Tony McGee was born in Highgate, London, and educated in Chelsea, London. He became a fashion photographer at the age of sixteen and by seventeen he had shot covers for Harper’s Bazaar, and Vogue. He was later introduced to the world of rock and roll photography and worked with the likes of Roxy Music, David Bowie, Wham and Tina Turner. He produced worldwide documentaries of problems as old as mankind itself: hunger, oppression, intolerance of difference, the solitude of the weak, wars, rebellions, and the ever-uncertain battle to free the mind of the bonds of inertia and stupidity. He offers meaningful and intellectually stimulating images of ourselves and of the conditions that define our existence. Harold Evans, former Sunday Times editor, wrote in his book Pictures on a Page that Cagnoni is one of the most famous photographers in the world, alongside Henry Cartier-Bresson, Bill Brandt, Don McCullin and Eugene Smith.

It was during the 1940s that Asano began to photograph the snowscapes of the northern regions of Japan, in what would become a 20 year project. Travelling by train on nights before a snowfall was forecast, Asano photographed the morning markets, festivals and snowstorms of Noto, Echigo and Michinoku.

His images of stage and ballet regularly graced the pages of magazines like The Sketch, The Tatler and the Illustrated London News. A technical pioneer as well as a gifted portrait photographer, Sasha invented a number of photographic apparatus during his career – including the Sashelite flashlight system. During the 1930s Sasha worked as a renowned publicity stills photographer to the British film industry, shooting stars such as Vivien Leigh, before retiring in 1940.

The last decade consolidated Harry’s position at the leading edge of contemporary portrait photography and in 2005 The National Portrait Gallery in London played host to his first solo exhibition Harry Borden on Business. He has over one hundred images in the permanent collection. He is currently involved in a project photographing Holocaust survivors, which has taken him to Australia, Israel & South America.

Venetia Dearden Mercedes and Stuart, 2007 Mercedes and Stuart at home on a summer day in Somerset. Clare Struthers and Becky Matthews My Big Fat Ugandan Wedding, 2009 Uganda is a country ripped apart by 22 years of civil war, leaving 1.6 million people displaced. An event intended to inspire possibility took place in one refugee camp in Pader – the mass wedding of six couples. The dresses donated from the UK, continue to empower the brides with a dress hire shop and a sustainable income. Chloe Dewe Mathews / Panos Pictures Melted Snow Puddle, 2010 A Uighur market in Urumqi is dwarfed by large-scale Chinese developments. This Muslim minority are struggling to defend their culture and traditions, as China continues to dilute its population through government led Han migration. From the series ‘China’s Wild West’. Digital C-Type print, 20” x 16” Limited edition 1/20, signed verso, printed 2011 Chloe Dewe Mathews spent four years working in the film industry after graduating from Fine Art at Oxford University. Since dedicating herself to photography, her subject matter has been diverse, from Uzbek gravediggers on the Caspian coast, to Hasidic Jews on holiday in Wales. In 2010 she hitchhiked from China back to Britain, which became a recce for a lifetime’s work ahead. Her work is published widely and has been exhibited in London, Berlin, Buenos Aires and Toronto. 64

Ismail / World Vision / PhotoVoice Rag picking, 2010 This rag picker was playing and fell down and started laughing. C-Type print, 16” x 12” Printed 2011 Ismail was a participant in the Pakistan phase of PhotoVoice’s ‘See it Our Way’ project in partnership with World Vision, working with young people living in communities affected by child trafficking across Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Each group explored the risks and root causes faced by young people in their community, contributing to a campaign to show the complexity of the issue of child trafficking and to drive action to protect those at risk. The Pakistan group was made up of street-involved young people in the impoverished town of Rawalpindi, close to Islamabad, Pakistan.

Irakly Shanidze / International Academy of Photographic Arts Lesley with Oranges, 2003 Giclée print, 14.6” x 11” Limited edition 1/1, printed 2011 Irakly Shanidze was born in 1968 in the USSR and is now living in the US. He has always been interested in visual arts, drawing and painting almost constantly up until he took his first photograph at the age of twelve. The experience was so rewarding that he abandoned pencils and watercolours and has been photographing ever since. Irakly currently works as an advertising and commercial photographer and teaches photography at the International Academy of Photographic Arts, the school he founded in 2004.

Digital C-Type print, 12” x 16” Printed 2011 Finbarr O’Reilly was born in Wales in 1971, but lived in Ireland until moving to Canada at the age of nine. He started his journalism career as an Arts correspondent for Canada’s The Globe and Mail newspaper. He joined Reuters in October 2001 as a text stringer in Kinshasa, Congo before becoming the African Great Lakes correspondent. Finbarr turned towards photography in March 2005 and now works as Reuters’ chief photographer for West and Central Africa. Finbarr’s photographs and multimedia have received numerous industry awards, the first of which was the World Press Photo of the Year award in 2006.

He then joined Reuters as a freelance photographer in 1996 during the political turmoil across the former Yugoslavia. Goran was Reuters’ Photographer of the Year in 2003 and 2005, and shot Reuters’ Picture of the Year in 2008. He won the China International Press Photo (CHIPP) for news in 2004 and NPPA Best of Photo Journalism first award in the Portrait and Personality category in 2005.

He has won numerous awards for his photography including Best of Photojournalism and Days Japan for his coverage of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. He is currently based in Beijing for Reuters.

Steve Bloom Elephant splashing, Savuti, Botswana, 2005 Photographed in Savuti, Botswana, this image is from a series of diverse and unique photographs of elephants which appeared in Steve Bloom’s best-selling photography monograph Elephant! (Thames & Hudson). Archival pigment print, 24” x 16” Limited edition 1/35, signed recto, printed 2010 Steve Bloom was born in South Africa and first used his camera to document life there during the apartheid years. In the early nineties, he began to photograph animals and built up a body of work that reveals their sentience and blurs the lines that separate different species. Giclée Fine Art print, 20” x 20” Limited edition 1/5, printed 2011 Jason Larkin decided to dedicate his time solely to photography upon completion of his Masters in photojournalism, following an early career producing video documentaries and multi-media work. He moved to Cairo where he forged a successful career working as a photographer, having his personal work published in many international periodicals. He now dedicates his time to developing larger bodies of work that engage and reflect on current affairs which play out more in the periphery, seeking another more comprehensive viewpoint of an often misunderstood and ignored reality.

Bianca Tennant / PhotoVoice Path, 2011 We all take different paths but which way will we go? C-Type print, 12” x 16” Printed 2011 Bianca was a participant in PhotoVoice’s 2011 project ‘Lookout London’, in which young people in supported housing in Homerton and Walthamstow shared their perspectives on gangs and knife crime. This project seeks to remind those contemplating policy and action to reduce criminal behaviour that young people should be factored in as part of the solution, not simply considered to be the problem. Bianca’s work has also been exhibited in 2011 as part of the ‘Walk in My Shoes’ Photo trail in Southside Shopping Centre, Wandsworth, and at the Hereford Photography Festival.

It was published in contemporary art magazine NextLevel with text by Bianca Jagger, who was representing the anti war coalition. A week after publication the negative mysteriously went missing, never to be found. He has had solo shows in the UK and Europe including ‘Beach’ and ‘Inland’ at The Photographers’ Gallery, London and his work is showcased regularly at Paris Photo and photoLondon. He won the Christies Photographic Competition 2009 and was a featured photographer in BBC Arts documentary, ‘Britain in Pictures’ in 2007, as well as part of group show ‘British Landscape Photography’, curated by The Photographers’ Gallery in 2009. 84

Gary Waite Rollercoaster, Blackpool, 2011 I heard the sound of the rollercoaster overhead, and raised my camera to capture it as it came into frame. It was like scoring a goal! C-Type print, 12” x 16” Printed 2011 Gary is a blind photographer living in South London. He was introduced to sensory photography techniques that allow him to capture his experiences using the other senses through PhotoVoice’s ‘Sights Unseen’ project in 2009, and in 2010 received a PhotoVoice bursary funded by the John Kobal New Work Award to undertake a personal project documenting the West Indian music scene in London. In February 2011 he was recruited by Nokia to demonstrate their new camera phone, and was featured in a national TV and billboard advertising campaign that brought his work into the public eye. The Blackpool shoot that this image is taken from was organised by Nokia, and a film shot on the day is viewable online.
