intro We represent a South African businessman and art collector. Our Client, who wishes to remain anonymous, wishes to offer a very rare set of artworks, produced by the late Nobel Laureate Nelson Mandela (1918-2013). You are offered the right of first refusal in these very special works. The “My Robben Island Series 1, consisting of 500 signed and numbered colour lithographs and 50 artists proof, were authored by Nelson Mandela between March 2003 and June 2003 using his hand-drawn colour separations. Due to the very technical nature of lithographs, it is common or artists to work closely with a professional print maker in the production of their lithographs. Similarly Nelson Mandela worked closely with the print artist, Prof Stephen Inggs, who made the colour matrixes after Nelson Mandela produced the artworks themselves. The artworks in question are thus original works created on lithographic paper, each with a different colour which, when layered on top of each other, creates the end product.

What makes this collection so special Upon completion of the printing of the lithographs all the printing materials and plates were destroyed. The current set on offer boasts the extremely unique number of 466/500 with 466 being Nelson Mandela’s prisoner number at the time of his imprisonment on Robben Island. Nelson Mandela’s very emotive connotation with this specific set of lithographs was confirmed by Mr Ross Calder, publisher to Nelson Mandela, who stated that Nelson Mandela informed him that the seller of the above mentioned works, was not only the first owner of these lithographs, but that these lithographs numbered as 466/500 was of particular interest to Nelson Mandela himself, when he signed this set of works. He also confirmed that Nelson Mandela said that this was a significant number and, that whoever buys it should know its meaning.
