ANNUAL REPORT The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society July 1 - June 30, 2010 PHSonline.org
Letter from the President
I
n 2010 I left one job I loved and joined an organization that has inspired me for years—PHS. Over the past six months, I’ve learned a lot. One of the things I’m most excited about is the way organization is so intently focused on people. If you think about it, it is people that make PHS so successful—our members, staff, volunteers, donors, funders, partners, and huge body of constituents. On a larger scale, people who care about their neighborhoods and towns help give Philadelphia and the region a high quality of life, and PHS intersects with these people at every level. To me, this is “community” in every sense of the word. On a more personal level, as I commute to the office each morning, I feel like the luckiest guy in the world. There’s tremendous energy in this building, from those planning and volunteering at the Philadelphia International Flower Show to the trailblazing Philadelphia Green staff
and everyone in between. I especially appreciate the way the cumulative effort that goes into the Flower Show helps fuel everything else we do. It’s great teamwork, and I feel the buzz of activity every day at PHS. Lastly, I want to extend a special thank you to each member of the PHS Executive Committee and PHS Council, who helped make my transition as smooth as possible. Everyone on these two teams offered me good advice and support as I stepped into this new role. Many thanks especially to PHS Council Chair John K. Ball for his steady guidance and encouragement. Next year is already shaping up to be an amazing year, as the Flower Show will whisk us away to Springtime in Paris (March 6 to 13) and our greening, education, and outreach programs strive for even greater impact. It’s an exciting time to be a part of PHS, and I’m thrilled to be affiliated with this vibrant organization.

• A hot-air balloon covered with 55,000 flowers soared above the main entrance, eliciting an instant “wow” from arriving visitors. • Exhibitors, garden clubs, and individual exhibitors interpreted the international theme with stunning designs. • Foreign coverage included publications from the United Kingdom, China, South Korea,
France, Canada, Finland, and New Zealand, while a Polish-language TV crew roamed the Show floor. • PHS sold 750 Family memberships online as people took advantage of the new “print at home” Flower Show ticketing. The Flower Show would not be possible without its more than 3,500 volunteers, who do everything from welcoming out-of-town bus groups in all kinds of weather to judging horticultural and artistic entries— beginning at 7 am.
Proceeds from the Flower Show, including ticket sales and sponsorship contributions, support PHS and its acclaimed urban greening program, Philadelphia Green. Special thanks to the sponsors of the 2010 Flower Show: PNC, Presenter; Subaru of America, Inc., Premier Sponsor; ACME Markets, Bartlett Tree Experts, EP Henry, Tourism Ireland, and Mantis, Official Sponsors; and 6ABC and ARAMARK.

T
he 2010 Azalea Garden Party & Silent Auction achieved the highest net revenue in ten years for this annual event. The party theme, “Cinco de Mayo,” was reflected in the décor, food, and entertainment, and ticket pre-registration and sponsorship helped boost financial results. The party attracted more than 500 guests and raised more than $55,000 to help maintain the much-loved garden, which is located in Fairmount Park. Greening champions from across the country look to PHS as a model for community revitalization through horticulture. In July 2009, PHS and the members of Teens 4 Good, a youth entrepreneurship initiative that transforms vacant lots into urban gardens and farms, shared their stories with officials from the White House Office of Urban Affairs and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
PHS and the Institute for Local Self Reliance co-sponsored Compost Matters, a one-day conference in April attended by 250 people that detailed the state of large-scale composting in the Delaware Valley. Partners included the Sustainable Business Network (for outreach), and funding came from the US Environmental Protection Agency/ Region III and the William Penn Foundation.
PHS manages tours of the green roof at PECO’s downtown headquarters, offering information about green roof technology and exciting views of the city.
Volunteers
V
olunteers fill essential roles at PHS throughout each year. Thousands of people from across the region log countless hours at the Philadelphia International Flower Show, and hundreds more help run events, serve on committees, and support the urban greening work of Philadelphia Green. PHS could not succeed without their invaluable assistance and their investment in our mission. There are so many ways to volunteer. To learn more, please visit the PHS website or call 215-988-8800.
On May 8, Philadelphia residents showed their love for neighborhood parks by volunteering at the first annual LOVE Your Park Day. The event involved more than 90 parks and approximately 2,350 volunteers who donated 8,000 hours. That’s $155,000* worth of donated labor—not bad for one day! *Based on calculations by National Public Lands Day

The 2010 Kids Grow Expo attracted 10,000 schoolchildren.
HS continues to reach out to engage young people in its work and mission. About 10,000 children from schools all over the region attended the 2010 PHS Kids Grow Expo—the highest attendance figures yet for this annual event. The Expo takes place at the Ambler Campus of Temple University in partnership with Temple’s EarthFest celebration.

PHS’s Tree Tenders launched a special program to engage college students in community tree care, beginning locally with LaSalle University, Philadelphia University, Esperanza College, Cabrini College, and Widener University. So far, more than 200 students have taken part in trainings, tree inventories, and plantings.
Volunteers from Cabrini College plant trees in Norristown.
Brought together by a shared interest in greening and the benefits it can bring to our region, the PHS Young Friends participate in volunteer activities and educational and networking events. One of this year’s most popular events was a kayak tour of the Delaware River. For more information about PHS Young Friends, please email youngfriends@ pennhort.org.
Drew Becher met with PHS Young Friends. A new partnership with the Girls Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania allows troops to earn a special PHS patch. With a focus on growth, exploration, and leadership, the program encourages Girl Scouts of all ages to build relationships and transform their communities.

Growing the Future of PHS
$6 million contributed by members of The 1827 Society since 1996
P
HS is grateful for the continued support of many individuals and organizations that believe in its mission and invest in its programs. PHS members are a vital part of this loyal network. At the end of June, PHS had 17,000 active members representing 43 states, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada, Bermuda, and the United Kingdom. Participation in the PHS Annual Fund, which provides unrestricted support, grew this year by more than 30 percent. Participation in the 1827 Society remained strong with 264 members continuing to subscribe to this leadership category. Members the 1827 Society have contributed more than $6 million since 1996.
Major grants during FY 2010 year included $300,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the new City Harvest Growers Alliance, as well as $1.65 million from PENNVEST for a major tree-planting initiative. And PHS recently learned it was awarded a $1 million grant from the William Penn Foundation for new Philadelphia Green initiatives. A list of PHS contributors can be found here.

P
HS has been helping urban gardeners grow food for over 35 years through its programs for community gardeners. Its City Harvest project grows food in community gardens for distribution to needy families. A new initiative, the City Harvest Growers Alliance, encourages entrepreneurial urban food production in Philadelphia. Funding by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (with matching support from public and private donations) enables PHS to assist local gardeners and urban farmers who grow and sell organic produce within the city, making nutritious food more widely accessible. An initial group of 15 growers produced nearly 5,000 pounds of food by the end of September 2010.
The City Harvest Growers Alliance promotes entrepreneurial food production.

Creating Green Jobs
“I’m just proud to be a part of this program and have a chance to be a productive member of society again. I don’t know where I’d be without it.” – Jonathan Paulson, graduate of Roots to Re-entry program
P
HS programs are helping to create real jobs in the growing “green” sector. The Youth Environmental Stewardship program employs Philadelphia teens to help improve neighborhood parks. In another green jobs pilot program, inmates from the Philadelphia Prison System receive 14 weeks of gardening and landscaping training through Roots to Re-Entry, a partnership among PHS; the Prison System; Bartram’s Garden; and KJK Associates, a local landscaping firm. The inmates grow seedlings at the prison, receive training in landscaping, and perform grounds-maintenance work at Bartram’s Garden through a work-release arrangement with KJK Associates.
The YES program employs Philadelphia teens in parks.

P
HS’s Philadelphia Green program empowers people who strive to make their communities better and engages residents in every step of the greening process. Community engagement was the name of the game in the Sustainable 19125 project, an effort to put one pocket of Philadelphia on the cutting edge when it comes to greener living. (The 19125 Zip code includes the Port Richmond, Fishtown, and East Kensington sections of the city.)
A partnership between PHS and the New Kensington Community Development Corporation and funded by the William Penn Foundation, the project has engaged more than 1,500 people, offering workshops on tree care, building rain barrels, composting, children’s gardening, and green roofs. PHS and its partners hosted community forums regarding the design of two new parks for the Delaware Riverfront (shown here in architect’s renderings). Race Street Pier Park will be located just south of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. Washington Avenue Green, a wetland habitat at the end of Washington Avenue, opened in October and incorporates work by environmental artist Stacy Levy. Biohabitats

TreeVitalize volunteers plant trees in riparian areas to improve water quality.
his year PHS planted nearly 8,000 trees in Philadelphia and southeastern Pennsylvania, thanks to a $1.65 million grant through PENNVEST, a Pennsylvania state agency. The majority of the trees have found homes in riparian buffer zones along waterways, where they help reduce erosion and improve water quality. An additional 2,180 trees were planted on public lands, mainly in parks and along streets in Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties.
PHS staff also goes on the road to share its experience. As the urban greening consultant for the national organization Keep America Beautiful, PHS provided consultations with KAB affiliates during the group’s national conference in Washington, D.C. Our staff visited more than 22 states, provided training to communities looking to revitalize through greening, and networked with industry leaders and policy makers both domestic and international.
PHS Online
50,000
web visitors read the Flower Show blog between January and April
P
HS stepped up its online presence this year, and PHSonline.org offers more ways for visitors to learn about PHS, volunteer, and get great gardening information. Our blogs, Facebook pages and Twitter feeds now cover the Flower Show, Philadelphia Green, and educational offerings. The PHS McLean Library received funding through the Library Services Technology Act to digitize books in the
collection that are in the public domain (published in the United States before 1923). In coming months the library staff will send hundreds of books to a scanning center for digitization. Classic gardening books will be accessible on the Internet Archive and can be downloaded into a Kindle reader! Also, Wired Gardener, an e-newsletter with gardening and greening news produced by the library, moved to a new format, attracting 6,000 visits between February and June 2010.
Meadowbrook Farm
Located in Abington Township, Meadowbrook Farm is a PHS affiliate that includes a retail nursery, gift shop, greenhouse, and estate house. Meadowbrook Farm always has a major presence at the Philadelphia International Flower Show. In fact, it is the principal grower of many exhibitor plants. At the 2010 Show, Meadowbrook set up its popular satellite shop for a second year. According to volunteer co-chairs Margo Eremus and Sherrill Rowland, favorites among shoppers included succulents, herbs, and PHS Gold Medal Plants. Sales at the satellite store increased by more than 50 percent over the previous year.
To receive emails from Meadowbrook Farm, complete with growing tips, sales alerts, and information on events and programs, visit PHSonline.org and sign up for the mailing list.
Meadowbrook has long been admired for its formal displays, but this year the vegetable garden earned high praise among visitors, and many plants grown in the garden could also be purchased in the sales yard. “We wanted everyone to know that you don’t need acres of space to raise fresh produce. That’s why we promoted container-grown goodies, such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant,” says general manager Jessica Story. “The people who work here are passionate about what they do, so we love to share our passion with everyone who drops by.”
PHS members visit Meadowbrook Farm often, taking advantage of a 10 percent discount on plant purchases year-round. In the past year, 104 people signed up for PHS membership on site at Meadowbrook Farm. For additional information—including location, hours, and directions—visit meadowbrookfarm.org.
At a recent Meadowbrook Holiday Open House, hundreds of visitors enjoyed the decorations, amazing potted plants, and plenty of festive activities.
Report of the Finance Committee PHS is pleased to present the financial results for the year ended June 30, 2010. The financial markets had a significant effect on PHS’s income as shown by the gains in investment activity in 2010 versus the losses in 2009. While earned income was down slightly, unrestricted contributions and membership were up. Although 2009 was a challenge, we are encouraged by the 2010 results and grateful to all PHS supporters who contributed to this success. Many thanks to our members, donors, partners, friends, and Flower Show visitors.

ABOUT
PHS
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) is a nonprofit membership organization founded in 1827. PHS sponsors events, educational activities, and publications for gardeners at all levels. Through its award-winning urban greening initiatives, PHS works with citizens, government agencies, nonprofits, and other partners nationwide to plan, create, and maintain community green spaces. Proceeds from the Philadelphia International Flower Show, along with funding from foundations, corporations, government agencies, and individuals, help support PHS programs.
