NEWS|4 With the Missouri Primary right around the corner, on March 15, it is important for young “Millennial Voters” to be educated on the presidential candidates. As a high school student it can be hard to know enough about each of the candidates to be able to make an informed decision on Election Day. This leads to votes being cast based on a student’s families’ or friends’ views rather than their own. So before you turn in your ballot, here is a guide to the candidates and some of the issues they would focus on if they were elected.

y r lla ton i H lin C

Hillary Clinton, of the Democratic Party, would invest time to the research and the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. Clinton would also focus on the problem of campus sexual assault and how to end it. A priority of Clinton’s would be issues regarding the criminal justice system. She wants to change the minimum sentences, end private prisons, and rebuild a trust between the public and law enforcement. Her experience includes serving as Secretary of State and as a Senator. KEY STANCE Important to You: Clinton believes no student should have to borrow money to pay for books, fees, or tuition to attend a four-year public college in their state.

ie rs n r e by LEXI MADDOX e B and S Bernie Sanders, a democratic candidate, would target the issue of income wealth and inequality by changing the distribution of taxes and increasing the minimum wage. Sanders believes college tuition should be free and therefore college should be debtfree. Sanders has proposed the Rebuild America Act to modernize infrastructure while also creating jobs. He is currently in his second term as a United States Senator. KEY STANCE Important to You: Sanders wants to increase the minimum wage and also believes that tuition should be free at public colleges and college should be debt free.

Marco Rubio is a Republican who would want to reform the tax code regarding parents in order to promote strong families. Because of his belief that the government should be less involved with American farmers, Rubio would decrease the regulations on farmers and ranchers. Also, he would focus on editing the Medicare and Social Security programs currently in place to increase the income of seniors. Rubio’s experience includes being the West Miami City Commissioner and more recently serving as a United States Senator. KEY STANCE Important to You: Rubio supports the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms.

Donald Trump, a member of the Republican Party, believes that the dynamic of the United States’ trade with China needs to be altered so he would negotiate for a change. Trump would focus on increasing care for veterans. Trump has proposed a tax reform with goals that include tax relief for the middle class and a simplified tax code. He also feels strongly that illegal immigrants must be kept out of the country in order to preserve American jobs. Trump has experience as a successful businessman. KEY STANCE Important to You: Trump is against the use of Common Core in education and wants to end it.

d z e T ru C

Ted Cruz, of the Republican Party, believes in following the Constitution closely and giving power back to the states. As president he would protect the right to bear arms and would also increase border security. Concerning world affairs and the United States’ role on the global stage, Cruz believes that the United States should hold a leadership role by defending its interests and values. He has experience as the Solicitor General for Texas and as a United States Senator. KEY STANCE Important to You: Cruz supports ending Planned Parenthood funding due to his pro-life stance.

NO ELECTION EDUCATION WITHOUT

Students must find credible sources for information about presidential candidates

by BRET VANICE

This time next year, there will be a new president of the United States. It could be Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Ted Cruz, Bernie Sanders or any of the other candidates. You may be able to help make the decision. A lot of South students say that they don’t know anything about politics and they don’t know where to get information. It is very important for millennial voters to make sure that they are getting the proper information they need when voting. This includes unbiased news sources. According to Business Insider, the most reliable, neutral news source is The Wall Street Journal. The most distrusted news source according to Business Insider is BuzzFeed. Not far behind them is Fox News, a very conservative network, and right after that, slightly more trusted is CNN, a more liberal network. ABC is the most trusted news source of the big three: ABC, NBC and CBS. However, Terry Irving, Author and Senior Producer/ Writer at ABC News, MSNBC, CNN, and Fox said in his article on Quora, “I can say with complete confidence that no single channel, no single newspaper, no single radio station will give you what you really require.” A lot of people get their information from their parents or from a single news source. It is important when casting a vote to make sure that you are getting information from multiple different sources. Kimberly Hendricks, social studies, said, “You have to read a variety of things, so you can’t always go to just one news source. You can’t always say CNN, Fox News. I think the bigger, more important piece is to read a variety of pieces and look at who is doing the writing - if they’re being funded by one of the candidates or something like that.” However, many students at South still don’t know

what makes a source reliable. How are you supposed to get valid information if you don’t know if it’s true. “People’s blogs and stuff like that, they’re not necessarily educated on exactly what they’re doing. So an opinion page or something like that, or Facebook, or Twitter - those aren’t always the most reliable places to get your information. A lot of the time it’s people ranting opposed to something they know for certain,” said Hendricks. There are a lot of students at South that know plenty about finding quality news sources. Morgan Greenfield, junior, said, “You need to watch some conservative and some liberal so you can see both sides.” There are also plenty of South students that understand the importance of getting both sources of information they just don’t know how. “You would want a source with facts and no opinions, but it’s hard to find a news source like that,” said Kallen Mazeitis, junior. So, if millennial voters are looking for places to get reliable information, remember: always use more than one source. The most reliable sources are the more major networks, the more liberal 24 hour news network is CNN, and the more conservative 24 hour news network is Fox News. You can get information from plenty of other sources, but the most important thing is that you have gathered information from a variety of those. If you are going to vote, make sure you know what you’re voting for when you cast your vote. It is going to change the lives of many Americans, and could even change yours.

LIEB

Just before school let out last year Christine Lieb, math, was diagnosed with stage two Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Triple-negative breast cancer refers to any breast cancer that does not express the genes for estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor or Her2/neu, meaning treatments like hormone therapy and drugs that target estrogen, progesterone, and HER-2 are ineffective. Lieb had never been previously diagnosed. “I was pretty shocked to say the least,” she said. “My emotions were all over the place; I was scared,” She began her treatment in June with a surgery called a Lumpectomy, removing the malignant (cancerous) tumor. “I was surprised how quick the procedure was,” Lieb recalls. “It was an out-patient surgery, and I was in and out on the same day!” She then went through chemotherapy from July to November. “I was really worried about the side effects,” said Lieb. “They told me it affects everyone differently, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.” According to the Fedral Drug Administration, chemotherapy treatment uses medicine to weaken and destroy cancer cells in the body, including cells at the original cancer site and any cancer cells that may have spread to another part of the body. Chemotherapy, often shortened to just “chemo,” is a systemic therapy, which means it affects the whole body by going through the bloodstream. “My friends wanted to make things

more light-hearted during my chemo, so when my hair started to fall out they all came over and we had a ‘hair trimming’ party,” Lieb chuckled as she recollected the warm moment. “It would’ve been great had we not cut my hair too short! Then it just became a hair shaving party.” Chemotherapy can last anywhere from six months to several years, by far the longest part of cancer treatment. “I was absolutely thankful, for a lot of things,” she said. “My daughters were there with me every step of the way. They came to every chemo appointment I had.” Lieb says the school, and Dr. Dale Longenecker, principal, could not have been more supportive in her journey. “Dr. Longenecker and Mrs. Mullins handled everything with central office, and just helped me feel at ease leaving and then coming back, too,” she said. Lieb said that the most helpful things were all the thoughts and prayers everyone gave. “It was just really nice to know I wasn’t alone, and I was being thought of,” she said. “Although it was nice to have my dog around during the treatments, she’d let me know it was okay to feel a little lazy.” After it ended in November, Lieb began her radiation treatments, . Radiation for her ended last Wednesday, Feb. 3. “I’ve, of course, been going to follow up appointments and check ups,” she said, “But thankfully they think they’ve gotten it all.” Lieb said to celebrate, they had their second hair trimming party. “It’s still not long enough to show yet, but it was sticking out in some places,” she chuckled.

Streaking for Snapchat Information behind the popular and ever-changing app

Snapchat is taking over the social network game. It is everywhere around you, from live stories to selfie lenses and even live stories from some of the most popular events in the country. Snapchat is definitely on the rise. According to Martin-Wilbourn Partners, which is an accountability based marketing website, Snapchat only trails only Instagram and Facebook. They are the third most popular social network in the world with nearly 33 percent usage rate on mobile phones. In November of 2014 Snapchat turned down an offer from Facebook for $3 billion which turned out to be a smart decision since they have been recently valued at an estimated $10 billion. Ben Becker, sophomore said, “I like to use my Snapchat to follow pro athletes and watch their stories before and after games.” One of the newest features of Snapchat are selfie lenses. Selfie lenses are what you get when you tap and hold down on your face. This makes using filters on your pictures extremely easy and now it’s all in one app. There is a huge variety of filters for every occasion! Some of the more popular selfie lenses

are the shrink face, aging filter, and the puking rainbow. “I only use the filters because the ladies love them,” said Jaylen Randle, senior. Another popular feature is the live stories for specific events or holidays. These stories are usually accompanied by their own filters that only last for a short time. Snapchat will broadcast a live story from an event like the Super Bowl or the Ralph Lauren fashion show in New York City and will put tons of individual stories into one. Worldwide there are over 400 million Snapchat stories created per day. “I feel like Snapchat stories are a good way to show your friends what you’re up to when you aren’t with them, “said Allie Hickey, junior. There is even a discover tab which allows you to view other stories consisting of news, sports, and entertainment. ESPN, MTV, and CNN are only a few of the stories that help Snapchat provide you news along with an easy way to chat with your friends. To get on one of these Snapchat channels does not come cheap. It was reported from adage.com that it cost nearly $750,000 for a 24 hour advertisement in the discover section.

“In a way, people like to be scared. I mean, why do we go to scary movies?” said Principal Dr. Dale Longenecker. “To feel afraid,” I replied. Longenecker stated that after a school shooting threat was written on the wall of the boy’s bathroom, officers and administrators immediately took action to secure South and investigate the crime; an arrest was made the following day. Although the student was caught, various rumors spread that the school was still not safe and that it “wasn’t over.” Students claimed that a relative of the student had tweeted this when the alleged student was caught. “This school is the safest school I can think of. The cops of Riverside would do anything for us,” said Longenecker. The Major and the Captain of the Riverside police showed up along with two more road officers when they were notified of the threat. “We had officers up all night searching for evidence and not one tweet or threat was found,” Longenecker said. Fear is a vital response to physical and emotional danger, and as a culture we seem to enjoy it. Psychology teacher Brad Peck described fear as a fight or flight response. “As humans, we have an instinct to survive, we hear a noise and determine whether that noise is a threat or not and we are put on alert--the frontal lobe in our brain rationalizes our fears,” Peck said. This philosophy explains why many students did not show up to school on Friday, Feb. 5. “Students chose to either run away from school or

rationalized that the shooting would not happen. The school was the safest it has ever been that day, I mean we had police officers at every door,” Peck said. Rumors spread of the attack sending students and parents both into hysteria. This situation is a reminder of how easy it is to play on fear. It also is a reminder of the thrill humans receive when they are afraid. One of the main hormones released during scary and thrilling activities is dopamine. Dopamine is strongly associated with the reward or pleasure system of the brain. Dopamine is released in areas such as the nucleus accumbens and prefrontal cortex. This is result of rewarding experiences such as eating food we enjoy or even thrilling actions, such as watching a scary movie or sky diving. This may explain why so many false rumors spread following the arrest of the student who wrote the threat. “No one warns you five days before, that they are going to come and hurt you. These are not the kinds of things I am afraid of. We’ve buried almost a dozen high school students because of car wrecks alone--that is what scares me,” said Longenecker. Longenecker claims people tend to work themselves into hysteria. “We worked ourselves into a complete frenzy over nothing. Like I’ve said before, this school just does not do disturbances very well. Our focus here is education,” Longenecker said. Whether the threat was legitimate or not, the fear that swallowed South was real.

TEACHERS IN South teachers head to Cuba, newly opened to US tourists by ASHLEY PASLEY

paradise

A group of South teachers are taking a leap into unfamiliar territory. Beginning on March 18, several teachers and staff will begin an eight day cruise around Cuba. The teachers attending include Barb Kauble, librarian; Melanie Gorges, Spanish; Alicia Walker, Social Studies; Shelly Evans, Social Studies; Linda Dahm, Administrative Assistant; Amanda Roth, Spanish; AJ Roth, Special Education, and a few others. The idea of the trip originated when the embargo with Cuba ended. The teachers enjoy traveling and wanted to visit before the history and climate of island becomes more “Americanized” and more of a tourist trap. Roth explained, “The main reason I wanted to go now is to see what Cuba is like with very little outside influence. As the economy opens up to foreign companies and tourists, I think it will change. Every other country I have visited has a huge influence from America- especially in the music they listen to and the TV and movies they watch. I am excited to see what the culture is like with little American influence.” ....The group is visiting all parts of Cuba, not just one part so that they can get the full experience. ....“This cruise will originate in Montego Bay, Jamaica and then will travel to all four major regions of the island including Santiago De Cuba, Havana, Cuba, Maria La Gorda, Cuba, and Cienfuego, Cuba, before we land back in Montego Bay and head for home,” explained Kauble. Traveling to Cuba is different from traveling to any other country. They are required to participate in a special People to People program. This program includes many educational aspects on and off the cruise ship that provides a special speaker or Cuban who will teach and prepare the visitors for the Culture, the history, the people of the historic land, and visual arts.

The group will participate in many different activities while on their trip. The teachers and staff are scheduled to have lessons on Cuban cooking, hand-rolled cigars, the history of rum and the Cuban language, as well as their music and instruments. Gorges said, “There are dancing lessons throughout the trip – Salsa, Rumba, Cha Cha, Mambo, and many others. We will have one free afternoon/evening in Havana to explore the city. There will be guided tours of the cities we go to, as well.” However, the trip isn’t all fun and games. It takes a lot of preparation to travel out of the country. All attendees have to purchase special insurance and a special visa. Although the trip doesn’t seem to cause a lot of nerves, it is causing some stress from the little things that have to get done. “Cuba still doesn’t accept American dollars as currency, so I have to order euros for exchange. When it comes to international travel, you also have to think about phone service, credit cards, and packing appropriately.” Gorges said. It takes several steps to get the proper money for the trip, which requires preparation before the trip. Kauble explained, “We are encouraged to exchange our money into Euros while in the United States to take into Cuba and exchange those into Cuban pesos once we arrive in Cuba. A different factor with Cuban currency is that they have one currency for their citizens and another one for tourists.” All the teachers and staff have personal reasons for going, but all are excited to learn more of the Cuba they have heard so much about. “I am not nervous about going at all,” said Kauble,

by BRADY SMITH and VIVIAN BROCKMAN Kansas City is such a wondrous city for multiple reasons. It has great sports, art, food and people. A city like that is hard to find. Since Kansas City is vast with so many opportunities, it is hard to even know all the extraordinary things out there. That’s why we came up with the Best of KC: Trends, Tips and To-Dos. Trends are what YOU guys at South said were your favorite things to do in KC. Tips are our personal picks on what we think are must-dos in Kansas City. Lastly, To-Dos are new things that are coming up in KC that you might not have known about and you should try out. With this guide, you can be sure to have the full experience in this beautiful city that we all love and call home.

When looking for something exciting to do outside of quaint Parkville, most students long to venture south of the of the river. Suburban kids require destination for this risky adventure (found with the GPS on their iPhone, of course.) South voted The West Bottoms as their favorite adventure destination. Not only is the West Bottoms a picturesque spot for capturing your Instagram-worthy adventure, but it has a lot of fun activities.

The first weekend of each month there is a plethora of antique stores opened. My favorite for shopping or simply eyeing intricate booths is The Top Hat Mercantile located at 1285 Hickory St. When you’ve gotten your fill of antiques, you can stop by the many food trucks parked down the streets in the area. After recharging with some street food take a leisurely walk around the old buildings and maybe even find yourself at an intimate art opening.

Nestled in the quaint little village of Westport near downtown Kansas City lays one of the newest, and most talked about donut shops, Doughnut Lounge. However, this isn’t your normal donut shop, after walking in you’ll most likely be taken away by the loud music and almost club-like environment. The Doughnut Lounge is a perfect fit for the typical younger crowd in Westport. It doesn’t only serve just their delicious donuts but also numerous kinds of coffee, as well as beer. Doughnut Lounge truly is a lounge, it’s a hangout spot. There’s a couple different spots to sit and kick back with your friends. Of course having a donut or two makes it even better. My personal suggestion: the cake donut. It’s fire.

Tapcade is an all you can play arcade that features a rotating selection of ‘80s and ‘90s games, all for just $5. The games change out frequently so you will never get bored with the selection. Not only are the games great, but so is the food and atmosphere. Food like street tacos, wings and burgers range from $6 to $10 and are all delicious. The inside offers a unique grungy look, with an entire wall plastered with retro movie and gaming posters to really make you feel like you are back in time.

No Free Ride FREE.

A word everyone loves no matter who you are, a word that makes a person shut up and listen, or maybe even sit down and read this story. Everything is better free, and lately everyone has been shutting up and bowing down to the new idea of free college. Although in theory this sounds great, there are huge flaws with the idea and effects it would have. It turns out the thing that everyone wants free is really not free at all. Look, do not get me wrong, I would love for college to be free with no harm done. I am pretty sure any person in their right mind would agree that they would like their college to be paid for. The problem is someone still has to pay for it, and without self-sufficiency we lose values and a hard work ethic. It takes away the incentive to graduate if you do not have to pay for it on your own. I am willing to bet plenty of people would rather stay in college with no responsibilities and party if they are not paying for it, rather than trying to go into the harsh adult world and find a job, pay bills, etc. The U.S., in case you missed, is already trillions of dollars in debt, and now somehow we want pay for everyone in the U.S. to go to college. College right now for high school graduates is a reward of hard work in high school, and a investment for their future. If everyone went to college for free it would lack the incentive of students in high school and lower grade levels to actually work hard and learn. What would be the reason to work extra hard, take those AP classes, apply for scholarships, do volunteer/community work if everything was just handed to you on a silver platter? The whole reason many Americans, especially millennials, are pushing for free college is so they will not have to deal with the debts that come with it after graduation, and also so everyone can go to college. No debt would be great, except the thing is all the debt goes to our federal and state government which will keep it from funding everything else we need. The whole concept and amount of money needed is just borderline impossible. On top of all this there is not enough room in public colleges for every kid in the nation or any number of students even close to that. Luckily, now in today’s society we are blessed with

Cost of Sanders’ proposed plan over 10 years:

$750 BILLION = $100 MILLION

With college becoming increasingly expensive, here is a look at other opportunities outside of four year universities and why free college is an improbable solution

by NICK CLAASSEN

all sorts of opportunities that will help get certain jobs and prosper in this country. Even for those who can’t afford a 4-year college or do not want to deal with the debt that comes with it, there are no doubt opportunities. One of the greatest is two free years of community college for doing things like A+, or technical schools that you actually take while you are in high school. And of course there is financial aid and scholarships that can earn you full rides to colleges by getting high ACT/SAT scores and hard work in school. Although college obviously helps with finding higher paying jobs, there are many people who do not think college is for them and can find jobs to suit their interests right out of high school. I think that’s great, as long as you are doing something that makes you happy. There are so many options for people today, and it does not matter whether you plan on going to a community college, a technical school, going to Harvard, or maybe not even going to college. There is something right for everyone, you just have to decide what that is. Saying that, free college for everyone is something that would not work, and could in reality just put us a lot farther back in debt. One of the proposed plans is to tax the 1 percent highly; not only is that unethical but it will not work. Put it in perspective, how is it fair that people who work extremely hard for their money and work their way up just get it all taken away from them to pay for others, so those others do not actually have to work hard and be self-sufficient? Even if we did tax those who make more money very highly, what is stopping them from moving themselves and their American businesses overseas to avoid high taxation? What would that do to our country then? All I am saying is everyone loves free stuff, but free college is not free. It will only keep becoming more expensive for ALL taxpayers, not just the rich. There are so many ways nowadays to make a mark in this world, no matter where you come from, find what path is right for you. College is one of those in which is a huge deal. Everything about it is crazy in some way, whether is crazy educating, crazy fun, or crazy expensive. College is meant to test your knowledge, test your dedication, and most of all test yourself as a person and what you are willing to go through. It loses a sort of value if all of that is free. Just remember, free stuff sounds great at first, but nothing is ever free.

ONFIDENTIAL NFORMANTS by ALEX ROTHERS

The happenings of drug dealers, police and informants are a common and entertaining theme in Hollywood. Though less dramatic, these things go on in real life as well. Today, police are using young people to do their work for them. These people are called confidential informants, and their jobs are often very dangerous, and sometimes fatal. According to justice.gov, a confidential informant is any individual who provides useful and credible information to police regarding felonious criminal activities. A CI works undercover for the police; most often their work deals with drugs. When a person is charged with a drug-related felony, the police may ask them if they want to drop or reduce their sentence by becoming a confidential informant. Confidential Informants are used to get information from criminals that police cannot get on their own. A typical job of a CI is to interact with drug dealers, like wearing a wire and buying drugs, then reporting the information to the police. Whether or not they agree to become an informant is entirely up to them, but the people are often pressured into it by police. Who wouldn’t want to completely drop a felony charge? When a teenager is offered a way out of a felony, without their parents being notified of anything, they are very likely to agree to become a CI- just another example of how police are able to manipulate people using their power. The problem is this job can be very dangerous. The police are basically asking young people (often high school and college students) to perform an undercover cop’s job. The difference is however, an undercover cop goes through years of training, when a CI is given only very minimal, if any training at all. “60 Minutes” ran a show on Andrew Sadek and Rachel Hoffman. Both were college students who were caught selling small amounts of marijuana and then agreed to become CI’s. Sadek worked as a CI for quite awhile, and then one day disappeared. His body was later found with a gunshot wound to the head. It is suspected that Sadek committed suicide to escape his job as a CI, or was murdered, most likely by drug dealers who found out he was working with the police. Rachel Hoffman’s first assignment as a CI was to buy 1,500 ecstasy pills, an ounce and a half of cocaine, and a gun from dealers. Rachel was to wear a wire and give the dealers $13,000 in exchange for the pills, cocaine and

I

a gun. Under the watch of 20 police officers, Rachel drove to meet the dealers. However, the dealers changed the site of the deal, and the police lost her. Rachel’s body was later found with five bullet wounds. The dealers found the wire in her purse and shot her five times with the gun she was supposed to be buying. It is absolutely absurd that police sent a young girl, with no training, who casually dealt a drug that is legal in some states, on an assignment that involved 1,500 ecstasy pills, an ounce and a half of cocaine, and a gun. Police seem to care more about getting their targets behind bars than the safety of the people who are doing all the work to catch these targets. This job may sound appealing to some who are faced with a long term jail sentence, but it is important to know exactly what will be expected of you and the consequences. Informants may be required to testify in a public trial, something that many people may be uncomfortable with. Besides the danger of the actual deal, a big problem with the use of informants is the revenge factor. If a drug dealer finds out that someone who bought drugs from them ratted them out to the cops, they wouldn’t be happy. If a criminal found out that someone testified against them in a trial, they wouldn’t be happy. Both of these situations puts the CI in danger if the criminals seek revenge. How should this problem be fixed? I don’t think there is anything wrong with police asking criminals that they have caught for information about other criminals, as long as this person’s name is not made public. But this is only how far it should go. It is completely unacceptable for police to put people in dangerous situations. Final advice: next time you find yourself in a situation that could end with getting caught or in trouble somehow with the police, think twice about the consequences. Besides the fact that whatever you’re doing could end with jail time, you could even be asked to become a confidential informant and be forced to rat out your friends in dangerous situations. If you do ever have to make this tough decision, just know the potential danger and consequences of being a confidential informant before you agree or disagree. No matter how much pressure you are under, you always have a choice.

OPINION | 17 I am a selfish 18 year old who loves nothing more than convenience right now. Convenience is something we can all relate to regardless of age. The convenience factor is what initially made me prefer using Spotify premium to purchasing music on ITunes. Let me begin by addressing that, yes I do understand the many benefits of purchasing music and supporting artists, but due to my selfish mindset the pros of Spotify outweigh the cons previously mentioned. That being said, for $9.99 per month, Spotify premium’s seemingly unlimited library offers me everything I need at the moment. Everything being: affordability, offline capabilities and exploration of music. With iTunes, my music variety was limited by lack of funds. Spotify, however, offers anything that I wish on my phone or computer at any time for one fee. Even with the free version of Spotify, users are able to listen to everything that premium users can, although they are not able to download music and have to listen to more advertisements. Spotify premium also allows me to download music and listen to it offline. This was my main selling point in making the switch. I consistently go over my data each month, adding additional costs and strife. Now with Spotify premium I am able to download selections of music for offline use. During my time with Spotify I’ve found more than just affordable costs. The plethora of options in regards to how you listen to your music is something that has made it truly special. You can listen to a singular artist, album, etc. or save selections to your library and playlists. Users also have the ability to listen to a radio feature (essentially Pandora). The Browse feature makes it easy to get lost in new artists or focus in on certain genres & moods through pre-made playlists. My personal favorite is the discover weekly playlist, which compiles a playlists of various songs each week based on what you listen to. To tie it all together, Spotify has somewhat of a social aspect to it. This aspect allows users to follow friends and artists. This angle of the service is ideal for our generation, and exploring music further. As a whole, I am content using Spotify to listen to the majority of my music. There are times when I stray from Spotify in order to listen to music that is unavailable there. For example, buying Chance the Rapper’s music, downloading Tidal to stream “The Life of Pablo” early, or even purchasing a Taylor Swift album...sike. These artists, as well as others, refuse to put their music on Spotify due to issues with fair compensation. So I suppose that most of us will prefer convenience until it inhibits our likes; to which we must venture out to alternative options. by VIVIAN BROCKMAN

In an age where we want easy access to everything for a cheap price, buying music seems to be the last option when finding ways to listen to your favorite artists’ music. Pandora, Apple Music, Spotify, and other music streaming companies make a convincing argument to use their product. While there are benefits to streaming music, buying is the way to go. Streaming music is similar to casual dating. You have an interest in someone and enjoy spending time with them, but you don’t know if you can commit to being serious. Someone who you really appreciate and connect with is someone who you would want to be in a serious relationship with. Music is the same way. I would much rather pay Adele for allowing me to listening her music, than a company that has very loose ties with her artistry. I appreciate Adele enough that I am willing to pay her $1.29 to listen to her belt “Hello” instead of paying a company $9.99 per month. Adele is the person who deserves my money, not a streaming company. Making music can be an expensive processes. From paying other musicians, to the equipment, full time music is an expensive job. Though most mainstream artists are definitely not in any financial troubles, record sales still affect the artist. I am not saying that because you use Spotify, Drake is going to end up homeless on the side of the road, but I am saying that artists still need to sell records in order to make money. From the perspective of a songwriter, I get bothered by people who are mad at artists for not offering their music to streaming companies. Songwriters, just like any other type of artist, spend months working on and perfect their projects. From trying to find a catchy chord progression, to being the the studio recording for countless hours, a lot of time, money, and energy is spent working on their craft. Though the process is long, artists are happy to do it because they want you to hear their music. At the end of the day, there is nothing wrong with streaming music. The ultimate goal of releasing songs is for people to enjoy and connect with them just like the writer did, whether that is through streaming or buying. However, don’t you want to give credit where credit is due?

Take 3 - Rap Albums to Watch If you could only choose one, which album would you take?... Views From The 6 DRAKE

The Life of Pablo KANYE WEST

“YOU GET A FUR! YOU GET A FUR! YOU GET A JET! YOU GET A JET!” said the Ghetto Oprah, a.k.a Pablo, a.k.a. Yeezus, a.k.a. Kanye West, in his song, “Feedback.” This is only one of the many infamous lines in West’s ninth album, “The Life of Pablo.” This is the album every Kanye fan and hater out there has been waiting for. The inspirational, controversial and clever lines come from of course the god himself, but other notable features as well like, Chance the Rapper, Frank Ocean, Desiigner, Kid Cudi, Rihanna and more. The lyrics are impressive on their own, but the creative sound is what carries the album. Kanye is known for his enticing intros and almost every single song delivers one, especially “Ultra Light Beam”, “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1”, “Highlights,” and “Waves.” Along with selfdeclaring his album “Album of the Life”, Kanye describes his album as a gospel album. Despite the prevalence of curse words, it definitely has a gospel vibe especially in the song “Ultra Light Beam” and “Low Lights”, where an uncredited woman preaches about the lord and her spirituality. Whether you love or hate Kanye, give the “Life of Pablo” a chance. If you are like the majority of the world and claim that you didn’t like Yeezus because you miss the old Kanye, you will most likely enjoy TLOP. I think this album is beautiful. I only wish that I could forget what it sounds like so I could listen to it over and over again without it ever getting old.

by ALEX ROTHERS

Without a doubt the most anticipated album (so far) in Drake’s early career has to be “Views From the 6.” As of late pretty much anyone who’s even a tiny bit into hip-hop has seen Drake tear apart the game. From the drop of “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” in early 2015, to the surprise album collab with Future on “What a Time to be Alive” later in the year, with the hype that Views is getting, it is safe to say that Drake is trying to remain on top for the rest of 2016. “Views” is set to drop on April 2. If you do some simple addition you’ll see that the release date is 4/2, which if you add it up, (4+2) = 6. 6, being the famous slang term for Toronto, Drake’s hometown. If Drake puts as much thought into his music as he did on the release date, “Views” promises not to disappoint.

by CARSON WELLS

“With the hype that Views is getting, it is safe to say that Drake is trying to remain on top for the rest of 2016.”

“This should easily be one of, if not the, best rap albums of 2016.”

Reminiscing

KENDRICK LAMAR & J. COLE Originally the scheduled release date for “Reminiscing” was for 2/16/16, but recent reports say that the project will be on hold thanks to both of the artists working on their own solo projects, and also J. Cole accompanying Drake on his world tour this summer. These two are some of the top rappers in the game at the moment, and they couldn’t balance each other out any better. J. Cole brings consistent lyrics that you can almost always guarantee will speak to you on a personal level, while Kendrick’s more unique style of hardcore fast-paced bars will leave you in awe. This should easily be one of, if not the, best rap albums of 2016.

South’s most participated in sport lines up for another season by CHASE PUTNAM

It doesn’t matter who you are or what sports you have played, as long as you have two legs you can partake in this high school sport. Track and field may be just viewed as running in circles as fast as you can for a certain distance, but it is much more than that to the 50 to 100 South athletes who participate every year. Like any other spring sport, workouts started for track and field right after winter break and continued up until the start of the season. These after school sessions prepared the athletes and got them in shape so they could be in full swing when the season rolled around. “We really focus on running form, technique and endurance. The kids who go to these every week are one step ahead and of those who don’t,” said sophomore runner Carson Rottinghaus. There is a total of 23

boys and girl events at the freshmen, junior varsity, and varsity level, ranging from the 4x100 relay to shot put to pole vaulting. There is almost an event for everyone in this sport and there are no tryouts so everyone can be involved. A track athlete at a meet, freshman, JV, or varsity, can compete in as many events as they are allowed to by a coach. You could be in five

“I stay in good shape and I get to hang out with my friends every day which makes it even more fun.” events or one, it just depends on what type of athlete you are. Junior Andi Elley throws varsity shot put and shared one reason why she enjoys track and looks forward to it. ”Track is not my main sport but it keeps me involved and busy in the offseason when I’m not focusing on volleyball. I stay in good shape and I get

to hang out with my friends every day which makes it even more fun,” she said. Especially for multisport athletes, track and field can really improve one’s strength and speed that you can apply to other sports. Just like swim or wrestling, track and field hold meets with multiple schools competing at one location. Hundreds of athletes are spread across the track, stretching and waiting for their event. Varsity sprinter Dillon Thomas’s favorite part about track is the meets. “The meets are almost like a big block party in a way,” said Thomas, “You get to see kids from other schools that you may not have seen in awhile and get to race them and the best part is after you beat them you get some bragging rights.”

FANS Not all South sporting events get the equal share of fans and supporters

S

everal sports at South get all the attention and fan motivation. Then there are other sports that do not get the fan support of South students like those do. Some South students in such sports aren’t bothered by the lack of support and motivation. JD Nassab, senior, is in tennis and is not affected by the lack of fan motivation. “You don’t need motivation for something you enjoy doing,” said Nassab. “Doing is motivation. You motivate yourself.” However, some of Nassab’s teammates are affected by the low fan support. ”I think they’re affected by it because they enjoy being watched,” said Nassab. Joe Cummings, sophomore, is in track and cross country. According to Cummings, cross country runs on grass trails. Grass trails are not very comfortable to sit on, which does not encourage fan attendance. “It’s about pushing yourself and doing your best,” Cummings said. “Not about the best fan support. Most of the fan support comes from the team.” Tanner Alderson, senior, is in track. Alderson began track in order to prepare himself for soccer. Alderson said he can understand why fans aren’t racing to watch

track meets. “Meets are kind of boring,” said Alderson. “I don’t think having any fans would make that much of a difference, but it would be nice.” Alderson, like Nassab, isn’t affected by the low fan support. “I don’t pay attention to stuff like that,” said Alderson. “I pay attention to myself, especially at State meets.” Hope Beatty, sophomore, is in girls’ swim. Beatty has been in girls’ swim for two years, and has been part of the outspoken conversation about the extremely low fan turnout at swim meets. "Swimmers talk about swimming, but I don’t believe that anyone really gets what we are talking about,” Beatty said. “I think seeing the Rage Cage at meets would be pretty hype, everyone cheering on everyone.” According to Beatty, the only turnout for swim meets are parents, family, and students going for Busenhart’s extra credit. These athletes endure sweat and hard work every day. They enjoy the sport they play and will continue to play hard despite the little motivation and support from fans.

MINOR LEAGUE SPORTS

MAJOR LEAGUE FUN

Discover three cheaper alternatives to Kansas City major league sports

Recently, Kansas city has become very good in all of three of its major professional sports (soccer, baseball, and football). Success, in most cases, leads to a rise in ticket prices since more people want to see a winning team. According to statista.com, the average price of a Royals ticket has risen $10 from 2013 to 2015. Professional sporting events also come with other large expenses: concessions. Not unlike the movie theater, concessions at professional sporting events are overpriced. At some games, you have to pay upwards of $5 for just one hot dog. These prices leave the average teenage sports fan strapped for cash after just one game. For this reason, many people are turning to local minor league sporting events to get their fix. Instead of going to the K this spring, visit Community America Ballpark instead. The T-Bones are a minor league baseball team in Kansas City who are not linked to any professional baseball team. Closer seating to the field and a more consumer friendly environment are characteristics of any T-bones home games.

“Everything is a lot less expensive at T-Bones games,” said Elijah Brizendine, Junior. “I never lose interest everytime I go.” Many people enjoy having more access to the players after the games. Others enjoy the slightly different atmosphere. “The atmosphere is much more relaxed than a Royals game.” said Grace Dunker, Senior. Looking for hard hitting and high scoring action? Well, look no further. The Missouri Mavericks are a minor league hockey team in Independance who are a part of the New York Islanders farm system. This means you will have a chance to see some players play before they make it to the big leagues. There are currently four players from the Islanders who are playing on the Mavericks. Former professional hockey player for the Islanders, Ken Morrow, helped make the connection between the two teams. His son Evan Morrow, Senior, has attended many Mavericks games. “The atmosphere of the crowd is really loud and fun,” said Morrow. “There is also a lot of scoring in the

games.” Like Sporting KC games, but do not like the prices? The Swope Park Rangers are a new minor league soccer team in Kansas City. The 2016 season will be their inaugural season. They will play most of their home games at Swope Park, but they will also have two home games at Children’s Mercy Park (home of Sporting KC). The Rangers, like the Mavericks, are linked to a professional team. In this case, the Rangers are a part of Sporting KC’s minor league system. Some Sporting players may spend some time playing for the Rangers before going professional. Clear benefits of a Rangers game are cheaper ticket and concession prices and a similar experience to a Sporting game. No one is saying to stop supporting your favorite professional sports team. However, next time you are considering going to a sporting event, check out the minor league teams here in Kansas City. They are a lot cheaper and they have a more close knit, fun atmosphere than most professional sports teams.

by RYAN WELTY

THE START OF THE REGULAR SEASON IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. It is hard to believe, but the MLB regular season starts sign a replacement for him. They do have some viable

up next month. The Royals will take on the Mets on Sunday Night Baseball to open up the season. As most of you know the Royals made some key additions during free agency, but they also lost some key players from last years championship team. With the departures of Ben Zobrist, Alex Rios, and Johnny Cueto, the Royals will look for other players to step in and fill the voids. The Royals also made some key additions during the offseason. Alex Gordon remains with the Royals signing a four year deal with a huge discount for the Royals. The team also signed former Royals reliever Joakim Soria who will provide bullpen depth. They also retained starter Chris Young and added Ian Kennedy with a big five year contract. The additions made will definitely help the Royals get back to where they want to be. The biggest question marks going into Spring Training are second base and right field. There are several possibilities for second base right now. Omar Infante, who is coming off an injury plagued year, will look to bounce back from a dismal season. Christian Colon also comes in with the possibility of starting on Opening Day. Colon has better offensive numbers than Infante but his defense is not nearly up to par with Infante’s. The third and final possibility for starting second baseman could be Raul Mondesi. Mondesi made his debut in the World Series and is looked to be the long term solution at shortstop once Alcides Escobar is gone. But Mondesi has played second base and could step in nicely this year. Another question mark going into the season is right field. The Royals did not re-sign Alex Rios and did not

options to replace him though. There is a possibility Yost will use a platoon system (using more than one player) in right field with Jarrod Dyson and Paulo Orlando. Both players played well last season so Yost is comfortable with either one. Travis Snider could also get a look in right field. He was a late offseason addition with the Royals signing him to a minor league contract and an invitation to Spring Training. The Royals will hopefully have a bounceback year from their starting rotation. The rotation was last in the league in innings and was also near the bottom in earned run average (ERA). Volquez, Kennedy, Ventura, Medlen, and Young or Duffy will be a very solid rotation. Those players will need to be consistent each and every outing. The bullpen will be just as strong as they were last year. Yes, they did lose Greg Holland for the year with Tommy John surgery, but they signed Soria to bolster up the pen. Soria will step in right away and contribute. “I am a little skeptical with the signing of Ian Kennedy but I think we will do good overall, and I like our chances for the playoffs,” said senior, Andrew Troha. Kennedy is coming off a 9-15 year with a 4.28 ERA and the Royals signed him to the second richest contract in the history of the team behind Alex Gordon’s. In 2011 he was 21-4 with a 2.88 ERA and finished fourth in the CY Young voting. The only thing is that was five years ago. If Ian Kennedy pitches well the Royals have a chance of getting back to the playoffs and making a run, but if Kennedy pitches like he did last year it could be a struggle for the Royals to get back to the playoffs.
