It is easy to get lost in a crowd of unfamiliar faces as you make your way to your car every day after the final bell has rung. Not everyone, however, is headed home after class. Hundreds of students fill up South’s classrooms long after the final bell has rang to learn a new language or create their next masterpiece. With over 40 clubs, finding the perfect place to spend your after school time is the easy part. And if by any chance you cannot find your niche, start your own club. This year Stephanie Allred and Aditya Joshi started SSA (page 10). Starting a club is easy; find people who have the same interests as you and a sponsor and before you know it. you have your very own club. In this issue of The View we will take you inside of the AP art room (page 3), make your New Year resolutions a reality (page 8 and 9,) and sit down with an award winning author (page 14.) So next time you are headed home, pause a second and consider getting involved with all of those unfamiliar faces. Who knows, you may just end up discovering a new talent.

The most recent DP proved that South still wants an organized dance

Courtwarming didn’t exactly go as planned; however, the winter did not go without a successful dance. The dance party at River Roll (aka DP @ the RR) was a hit. The dance, which started at 9 p.m., went past midnight with most of the almost 400 attendants being South students.. The success of the DP proves that students still crave an organized social event, if they are given freedom to do what they want. One way South could get more students to attend their dances would be to simply have more. South currently offers two dances open to all students: Homecoming and Courtwarming. Seniors and juniors have the opportunity to go to Prom, but it comes with a lofty price tag. If South offered more, less formal dances it could improve attendance. It has been successful for schools like Rockhurst and Platte County. This would raise more funds for STUCO which would in turn come back to the students. STUCO could use this money on assemblies, improved dances and for the general betterment of the school. Having more, supervised dances would not only bring in money and increase spirit, but also ensure a safe environment for students to come together. There will always be a continued debate over dance moves but more events might encourage the possibility of an incorporation of different dance styles, including ‘80s, disco or even barn dancing. Who doesn’t love a good hoedown? Now how can we make this happen? That’s up for STUCO and administration to decide, but one thing is for sure. The leaders of the school, both students and staff, need to compromise and do what they have to do in order for students to get excited about school dances again.

Examining the effects sound and smell have on memories

’m sitting at the lunch table when suddenly, a very catchy song pops into my head. Because I’m not presently having a conversation with anyone, I let the music in my head take over. Before I realize it, the words to the song are leading me back down memory lane, back to when I was a kid. Next thing I know, I can feel my body swaying back and forth and my friend suddenly asks me if I’m singing to myself inside my head. Hearing, smelling, tasting, touching and sight are five very important senses that are sometimes overlooked or taken for granted. What’s more is that some of these senses, particularly sound and smell, have a hidden quality, if you will. Sound and smell have been strongly linked to memory. The link between these senses and memory is actually easy to recognize. Just think about a time when a strong scent, maybe chocolate chip cookies, has taken you back to a childhood memory. Maybe you didn’t even realize you were reliving a memory, but this has probably happened to you many different times. A study at the Weizmann institute of science in Israel, led by Dr. Yaara Yeshurun, found that memories triggered by smell are actually stronger than when triggered by other senses, such as sound or taste. And, as I’ve already said, smell is not the only sense that can trigger someone’s memory. Sound can also take someone back to their childhood, and sound doesn’t necessarily have to be music. For instance, when I hear my little cousins laughing or playing, almost immediately I am sent back to when I used to play with my brother and sister. I’ve been stating the word ‘memory’ over and over again, but the word memory is not just a word, but a psychological term. Memory, in psychology, is the mental capacity to encode, store and retrieve information. In plain terms, exposure to select sounds and smells can trigger familiar things and people: memories. So, the next time you hear something, or smell something, familiar and it brings back a powerful memory, just go with it. After all, memories are something to be cherished and you don’t get to relive them every day.

This Wife is a Winner Wife By Wednesday gets high reviews

Q&A with Best-Selling Author Catherine Bybee by MALANA BRADFORD

Q. A.

“I recommend this book to anyone with a pulse.”

Q. A. Q. A.

alling all hopeless romantic book lovers: I have got the book for you! “Wife by Wednesday”, by Catherine Bybee is a must-read for anyone interested in romance novels. The story is about a duke, named Blake, looking for a temporary wife so he can inherit his deceased father’s fortune. To find said wife, he contacts a special kind of matchmaker who he thinks is a male. As the story would go, though, Sam turns out to be a woman, and instead of picking one of the three women she provides for him, Blake proposes the opportunity to her. Literally proposes. After some persuading, and a large some of money and promises, Sam agrees to be married to The Duke for one year. As you can imagine, the plot unravels and they actually fall in love. They decide to stay married and have children and live happily ever after. The story line may seem unoriginal but that couldn’t be less true. Details, word choice and in depth descriptions of the characters made me long for a love like Blake and Sam’s. The scene when the first kiss is described is so passionate I felt like I was apart of it. I got to know the characters personally, and became a part of the book myself; so when it ended I was legitimately upset. I recommend this book to anyone with a pulse, and give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. The way it’s written is incredible. Bybee has a way with words that engulfs you in the story and leaves you wanting more..

Oscar’s

When did you start writing? Did you have plans of becoming an author?

Q. A.

I was what you might call a ‘closet’ writer for years. I’d play with scenes in my head and attempt to write them down...but I didn’t seriously put pen to paper, or fingers to the keyboard, until about four and a half years ago. Once my first manuscript was finished I knew I had found a new passion. I didn’t plan it, it just kind of happened. How many total books have you written and do you have a favorite? I have written 15 books and at this point 10 are published. The others are in some sort of publication process. As for a favorite... that’s like asking a mother to pick between her kids. I love them all for different reasons. Who is your favorite author? Wow, I have to pick one? I admire Nora Roberts for everything she’s done. So many of her books are on my ‘keeper’ shelf. Kathleen Woodwiss is probably long-time historical romance author. When I need a thriller I turn to Dean Koontz and Stephen King. What advice would you give to high school aged students who may want to become authors? Pay attention and learn the rules that really don’t change with time. I would also encourage young writers today to follow their passion. It’s a very exciting time in publishing. A few short years ago the only authors who made a living writing were those on the best seller lists. Self publishing used to be taboo but now it’s becoming a norm. E-books and E-readers are only going to grow and become more prevalent in our society. Book stores are closing and downloading your favorite authors work is only a click away. Most artists will tell you “not to quit your day job” and I have to agree. But with the everchanging world of publishing, you might actually be able to make a living doing what you love in the future. Follow your dreams because nobody is going to do this for you.

It’s that time of year again. Awards season. And the big daddy of all of them is coming upon us. The 84th Academy Awards nominations were announced on January 24, and as usual, they were underwhelming. Some of the films pulled out ahead as clear frontrunners. Others lagged behind and decided to take a back seat to the better films nominated. Here’s a list of how the films rank, from most likely to win to least likely to win. The Frontrunners “The Artist” is clearly the frontrunner for Best Picture. It is the story of silent movie star George Valentin as he struggles to succeed after his film company decides to make talkies. Great acting here with a salute to the golden age of cinema. “The Descendants” is the next in line for best picture. George Clooney gives a top-notch performance as a man who learns that his coma induced wife has been cheating on him. Clooney is a shoo-in for Best Actor. “Hugo” is the last. lover’s dream. Martin Scorsese is an Academy favorite, and could very well win Best Director. There are some other options in the technical categories, which are very possible. The Contenders “Midnight in Paris” was my favorite film of the year. Owen Wilson gave an incredible performance, and it’s a shame he wasn’t nominated. Woody Allen is likely to win Best Director, but nothing is promised for Best Picture. “The Help” is next in line. It may not win Best Picture, but it will dominate the female actress categories. Viola Dans had an amazing performance here. So did Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain. However, that does not mean this will win anything other than acting awards. “War Horse” is the last contender. Steven Spielberg is an Academy favorite, and is always in the hunt. Other possibilities are technical awards, which is what Spielberg is famous for. I don’t see any other awards being won by this petty film, which I don’t think should even have been nominated.

The Longshots “Moneyball” is not likely to win anything. It’s a great film, but it’s no “Rocky.” Only three sports films have ever won the big one, and don’t expect the Academy to shake things up this time. Brad Pitt gave an outstanding performance. Jonah Hill’s performance was also top-notch. I loved this film, but due to the fact that it is a sports movie, there’s no hope for it. “The Tree of Life” is an incredibly powerful movie experience. However, this was a confusing film for many. The Academy gave props to Terrence Malick. for some incredible technical sequences, but I don’t look for this to be winning any awards. Last, we’ve got “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” Most were surprised to see this nominated, including me. It has been getting mixed reviews, and is not a movie the Academy would seem to nominate. I cannot deny Tom Hanks’ or Sandra Bullock’s work, but I just can’t see this winning anything. The Oscars will be held on February 26, 7:00 P.M., on ABC. Tune in to find out who this year’s winners and losers will be..

magine each day, walking across the cold and barren tiles of your bathroom floor; only to reach your worst enemy: the scale. For years you watch that number grow, knowing that each number added to the scale meant another number taken off of your life expectancy. A disease that has commonly occurred in adults is now affecting America’s children. That disease is obesity. Obesity and being overweight is currently a problem for 34 percent of all American adults and their children, as more than 72 million people face the daily struggle of weight gain. Shelby Bessette (12) has taken the first step against that struggle. “She has made the first step to better herself and I couldn’t be more proud,” said her brother, Clayton Bessette (11). Last month, Bessette went through Lap-Band surgery. Lap-Band surgery is a form of weight loss surgery that “alters the anatomy of the stomach to help you reduce your food intake”, according to the Consumer Guide to Bariatric Surgery. Bessette first decided that she wanted weight loss surgery when she was only 14 years old and in eighth grade. She had tried every diet and exercise imaginable, but to no success. “[Shelby] has wanted the surgery for as long as I can remember” said Clayton Bessette (11). Due to her excess weight, Bessette had developed exercise-induced asthma, constant joint and back pain and trouble sleeping. Not only did Bessette want to lose weight in order to improve her health, but she said bullying was a major factor as well. “I was beginning to get tired of people calling me names and making fun of me for

healthful HINTS When your daily schedule becomes stressful or busy, it can sometimes become easy to choose food that is convenient, over food that is best for your body. If you find yourself feeling less energized or in a bit of a winter slump, then a three or four day whole food detox will get your body back on track. When you cut caffeine, added sugars and processed food from your diet for a few days, your organs have time to cleanse your body of harmful pollutants. Focus on eating fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean meats and legumes. Leave your soda and coffee behind and instead opt for at least 8 glasses of water and decaf tea a day. Below is an example of a healthy detox day to get you in tip top shape and help you kiss your winter blues away: Celery with natural peanut butter Handful of berries Piece of fruit

something I couldn’t control,” said Bessette. Although it may have felt like it, Shelby Bessette was not alone in her struggle. The number of overweight and obese individuals has almost continuously increased since the 1960s. Now over 12 million of those individuals are children and adolescents, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Bessette was not going to be one of those 12 million individuals. After deciding on Lap-Band surgery, Bessette went in for her first consultation. Her surgeon, Dr. Malley, said that she had all the right qualities for the surgery. To be considered medically obese and eligible for weight loss surgery, a person’s Body Mass Index (BMI) has to be over 30. That, or the patient’s weight must be 20 percent or more than their suggested weight, according to the Consumer Guide to Bariatric Surgery. For once, Bessette was happy to meet all of the criteria. However, the final decision was not up to Bessette, her family or even Dr. Malley… it was up to her insurance company. Bessette soon found out that there was one last requirement that she was missing. Patients must be 18 years of age in order to have the Lap-Band surgery. “I was so excited that I had gotten approved for the surgery and then I had to wait around four years to actually get it,” said Bessette. The week Bessette turned 18, she went in for another consultation with Dr. Malley. As she had assumed, the only thing they were waiting on was once again insurance. Bessette’s insurance provider required

her to go on a three-month, doctor-supervised diet and exercise plan, along with having a psychiatric consultation. Bessette remained on the diet and exercise plan for three months, losing 10 pounds in total. “I got the call saying I was finally approved right after Christmas. It was the best present I could have asked for,” said Bessette. The final step before Bessette’s surgery was that she had to go on an all liquid diet, not to lose weight but instead to shrink her liver for the surgery. On Jan. 17, Bessette underwent surgery. “I was a little worried about [Shelby’s] surgery, I knew it was a very routine surgery, but there’s always worriment for me,” said Clayton Bessette (11). Since her surgery, Bessette has noticed immediate relief from her health ailments. Bessette said that she is not getting tired as often as she was and her back pain has gotten better as well. Both of these things now allow her to walk for a significantly longer period of time without having to stop. “I know she’s been bullied throughout her life, but I think with this surgery, she is getting more than a healthier lifestyle… she is getting a positive outlook on life,” said Anderson (12). From the time when Bessette started her weight loss journey back in August of 2011, she has lost a total of 35 pounds. Fifteen of those pounds were from the Lap-Band surgery alone. “Even though my journey is just now starting,” said Bessette, “it has already changed my life.”

hat if Tuileries Plaza was just as popular as Zona Rosa, with shoppers bustling in and around the shopping center? This could be the future for Tuileries. Briarcliff Realty bought the former Tuileries Plaza in Parkville for $13 Million last December, according to the Kansas City Star, and students are excited for possible improvements. “Tuileries is going to be great when all the new stuff is added into it, but right now it’s nothing compared to Zona Rosa,” said Jack Summa (11). Nathaniel Hagedorn, President of Briarcliff Realty, has announced that the realty plan to use $30 million to develop the unused 11.5 acres of land remaining in Tuileries Plaza. They plan to build a 298 unit luxury apartment complex that will house 400 residents right in Tuileries backyard. The apartment complex will have limousine service for all of its residents. In addition to the apartments, there are going to be a myriad of new restaurants added, including: a new Italian, Chinese, Japanese and breakfast restaurants. The changes to the area will start in the near future, according to Hagedorn. “It takes a while to get all the tenants and contracts, but we will be renaming Tuileries to The Village at Burlington Creek sometime in the upcoming weeks,

New club provides home for students who feel out of place with religion by ELIE QUIROZ

With plans for the future and their Tuesday meetings turning out for the best, the new club at South, Secular Student Alliance (SSA), is expecting great things. The SSA Club is about people who are non-denominational that come together to discuss philosophical topics and personal opinions. So not only does the club talk about hard-pressed issues, it also encourages people to speak their beliefs stated the SSA Club members. “I found a home where I can voice my opinion and not be judged about it,” said Kenneth Harris (11). SSA Club plans to do volunteer work. They want to give back to the

community in a good way to prove that Atheists should not have a bad name. They would like to be working with Harvesters and animal shelters. SSA will even go to religious volunteer organizations that would be willing to have their help, stated co-creators of SSA, Stephanie Allred and Aditya Joshi, (11) “Volunteering is a big part in SSA. We want the community to know that we are willing to help out in anyway,” said Allred. SSA had an unofficial meeting on Sunday, Jan. 22 to start the beginning stages of their club. Their first official meeting was Tuesday, Jan. 31 in A227. For Joshi, it was a great turn out. “There were about 12 or more people who showed up that morning. I was surprised, but really happy,” said Joshi. SSA planned to attend Reason

Fest Feb 11, 2012. Reason Fest is a big Atheist convention in Lawrence, Kan. Not everyone was planning to go. “We understand that some of our members are other religions so not everyone is forced to go. It is only if they want to,” said Joshi. With that thought, SSA states that their club is not just for Atheists and that anyone is welcome to come. The main goal of SSA is to show everyone that you don’t have to have a religion to be a good person or that not having a religion means that you are doomed. SSA wants everyone to feel included, according to Allred and Joshi. “We are not against other religions or are Satanists,” said Melissa Lokugamage (11). “We are a club for anyone to join in if they want to be a part of it.”

T

he attendance for the Courtwarming Dance on Jan. 28 was at an alltime low this year. The question is, why? I went to the dance, and nothing was really wrong. The iPod DJ was replaced by a teacher with a laptop, who happily took any song request. The lights were dimmed down, and other than a lack of great decorations and dancers, it was just like any school dance I’ve ever been to excluding this year’s Homecoming, of course. But, the lack of students in attendance was the main problem with the dance, other than the obvious dent in STUCO’s funding because of the lack of tickets sold. Honestly, I believe that the “Nazi-izm” that some students claimed went down at

Homecoming certainly did not happen at Courtwarming. So as long as the attendees danced reasonably, the chaperones responded reasonably. They followed a basic “No Grinding, No Yelling” agreement. So, the question I find myself asking is: was the low attendance a reasonable response from South’s students? Personally, I think so. As students, we learn from our experiences at this school. We learned earlier this year that the dances would be undergoing major changes. The authorities obviously didn’t expect this retaliation when they planned on making the rules at dances strict. Here’s my advice: Administrators, don’t change the rules unless you can handle the consequences, such as lack of funding or the wrath of students.

by KARLIE BISCHOFF A family at South won a remodel to make their bathroom accessible for all its children

M

ost students at South take for granted things like the ability to take a shower or wash their hands by themselves. But for one student and his brother, this independence has just recently been provided to them. Partnered with the Love Fund for Children, Schloegel Design Remodel puts on a contest called Big Splash every year to redesign bathrooms to make them more accessible for families with handicapped children, according to the company’s website. Nominations from friends and family with the most likes and comments gets the remodel. This year, a family from South, the Andersens, won the competition and got their bathroom remodeled to fit the needs of their children Daniel Andersen (9) and Samuel Andersen. “It was really unreal,” said Kassandra Andersen (10). “I freaked out when I found out.” Many families around the area were nominated for the remodel but the Andersens were the only recipient. “It was super cool but at the same time, I read the “WHAT’S HAPPENINGother descriptions and others needed it just as much TO THIS FAMILY ISN’T as we do,” said Benjamin. The family was surprised when they found out JUST NICE -- IT’S that they were to be the recipients of the renovation. “I was very excited,” said Daniel. “I honestly didn’t LIFE CHANGING.” think that we would get it.” Fox 4 News found out about the competition and reported about it on their show. “What’s happening to this family isn’t just nice - it’s life-changing,” said reporter Linda Wagar. It took eleven days for the bathroom to be renovated, during which time Samuel and Daniel showered at physical therapy and Benjamin and Kassandra showered at the YMCA. “It was actually kind of good because it forced us to work out,” said Benjamin. The remodel has helped Daniel and Samuel by allowing them to perform daily activities such as taking a shower and washing their hands with more independence. “My brother told me ‘I feel normal now,’ a feeling he doesn’t get to feel very often because he’s confined to a wheelchair,” said Benjamin Andersen (12). This experience has effected not only Daniel and Samuel, but the whole family. “People won’t have to help us as much, so that’s always a good thing,” said Daniel. The remodel consisted of an “all-new shower, toilet, flooring, tile, and vanity” according to the Big Splash website. The doors to the boys’ bedrooms were also widened to make it easier for them to get in with their wheelchairs. “It gives the boys more independence and they can feel better about themselves,” said Kassandra. The bathroom has already started to provide advantages to the Andersens, and they will continue to make full use of the remodel. “It’s made everything a ton easier,” said Benjamin. “They can do things they’ve never been able to do before because they were impeded by the fact that our bathroom wasn’t accessible.” The changes to the bathroom will continue to benefit the whole Andersen family and give Daniel and Samuel independence they’ve never had before. “It’s exciting,” said Daniel. “It’s a new experience.”

Before the renovation, the boys could not shower alone or wash their hands in the sink. Now, they can fit their wheelchairs into the shower and wheel under the sink.

The I

VowDoesn’t Wow

Movie ending leaves viewers longing for “The Notebook”

t’s finally out: the movie every girl has been waiting for. “The Vow” stars Channing Tatum who plays Leo and Rachel McAdams who plays Paige. Both do an amazing job of being this cute, head-over-heels for each other married couple. Both have played in Nicholas Sparks love stories before; “Dear John” and the all-time famous movie, “The Notebook.” Although “Dear John” was not as great as “The Notebook,” I really thought “The Vow” was finally going to live up to the expectations of “The Notebook”. The couple is perfectly happy until one day they get in a terrible accident and Paige loses all of her memory after she met her hubby, Leo. Her last memories are from a

time when she was studying to be a lawyer and engaged to high-flier Jeremy (Scott Speedman). This leads Tatum to trying constantly to make his wife fall back in love with him, for which she just does not cooperate at all. I do not know about you but if Channing Tatum told me he was my husband, I would not be asking questions, no matter how messed up my brain is. “The Vow” shows McAdams and Tatum becoming unbelievably close, both as a married couple and two people trying to find a road back to where they were. Soon enough, Tatum has given all he can and ends up having to make the hardest decision of his life. That is when all of the sniffles came

by CHANDLER TERMINI into the theater. McAdams and Tatum do an outstanding job of playing the two characters--there was even a time that I was so angry that she just kept treating my dream guy so badly! Despite the brain trauma plot hook, this movie provides you with a balance of laughter and definitely some tears. I will not spoil the ending for those who have not seen this love story yet, but myself and even some of my friends were not pleased with the ending at all. Let’s just say that I have yet to find a movie that has lived up to the amazing movie, “The Notebook.”

DOUBLETAKE: males vs.females over MIXED MESSAGES by JON HOLDEN

I don’t know how many times people get mad at me and I hear the quote “It was funny Jon, but you took it too far. You crossed that line.” What the heck does that mean? When people say that to me I think to myself; “Okay we can make fun of someone but my jokes can’t be too clever, because that’s when it becomes rude.” First off, the real question isn’t if I crossed the line, but if I really care that I went too far. I don’t feel bad if I cross the line that you made for yourself because of your own actions. It’s a joke, and you’re a joke for thinking that people can’t comment on the dumb things you have done. You want to make fun of my girlfriend and make sure I hear you; and then I make you cry; I then become that “one guy” who crossed the line. You wanted my attention and I gave it to you. But let’s take a step back. You say I cross a line; well what line is it exactly? The line of truth? Or could it be the line of honesty? If you ask me it’s funny to how

people can make their mistakes everyone else’s problems. If you do something that people don’t like, then don’t do it. If you’re going to be ashamed of what you do and have to cry about it later, why be dumb and follow through with what you’re doing? It’s really stupid to honestly care what people think; if you’re going to do something that’s considered wrong, don’t hide behind a line that you made up. Don’t tell me I went too far because you’re ashamed of yourself. If anything, you’re the one being rude to me. I don’t really care what people do; your business is your’s and mine is mine, I’m not going to judge you on anything else but how kind you are to me. Be whoever you want to be. No one’s really going to care what you do or how you spend your time. If you ask me, you’re the only one who will truly be affected by your decisions. Be accepting of who you are and be ready to accept the consequences for what you do and how you do it. To blame others for your decisions is kind of stupid. Just sayin’. #Broh’n

“Be accepting of who you are...”

by MALANA BRADFORD

The stickiest part of all relationships, especially in high school, is determining when it becomes “official.” Girls seem to have the hardest time with this.. the guy who you are “talking” to isn’t making the move to become your actual boyfriend. These situations happen often, Let’s say you and the boy who you consider to be “yours” (even though technically he is not) hangs out with another girl; is it appropriate for you to get mad and lash out? Of course you will be upset, that’s inevitable. But is it okay for you to verbally get angry and attack both the male and female involved? At first response I would say no. Until it becomes official, you cannot be mad about your partner showing interest in others; however, solutions may vary depending on circumstances. Sometimes boys will purposely say you are not together so they can hang out with others, and then claim

you are “psycho” when you respond with anger. Ladies, PLEASE do not fall into this trap. Even though you’re not in the wrong to be angry, the boys will make you out to be crazy and you won’t be able to defend yourself very well. Other times the only reason it hasn’t become official is because both parties are too shy or nervous to talk about what they “are.” If this is you, MAN UP! If you really like a person, and they seem to like you back, take the initiative to have the talk. It’s okay if it’s awkward; awkward is better than uncertainty. Even if the person you confront shuts the idea of a relationship down, it’s better than wondering and having your hopes up. In the end, these types of relationships are always the ones that end badly, because someone will think it’s more and someone will think it’s less. If you are a participant, I would suggest trying to be the person who cares less, because it won’t hurt as bad when it inevitably ends in flames.

North Oak’s Hidden Treasure

by DANNY KERWIN

Longboards’unique menu makes it a dining destination Although for most South students, North Oak might seem like a long drive, a trip to the hole-in-the-wall Longboards is one worth taking. Located in a strip mall on North Oak, Longboards Wraps and Bowls features a menu filled with exotic combinations and options that are unlike any other place around. The restaurant is a small, but cozy one. Featuring surf boards, pictures, a tiki bar and many other Pacific-like knick-knacks, Longboards makes for unique place for a bite to eat. A nice thing about Longboards is the variety on the already out-ofthe-ordinary menu. The restaurant offers cold wraps, grilled wraps, salads, bowls, sides and the O.G.

menu, the extra large wraps. Even if you’re a Longboards virgin, you’ll be able to find something that fits your taste. Many customer favorites include the Grilled Spicy Crab wrap, the Grilled Pork Luau wrap and the O.G. menu’s 619, featuring a multitude of ingredients that will leave your mouth watering. I decided to try the Grilled Teriyaki Chicken Wrap and I was not disappointed. With chicken, rice, teriyaki sauce and plenty of veggies, the wrap was delicious and nutritious. It was also a reasonable $5.19 before tax. Although I’m a bit picky and this choice appealed most to me, all the fresh veggies and cooked meats make for a surefire grub spot. If you’re ever in Gladstone, more specifically on North Oak Trafficway, and want to get a bite to eat, give Longboards a shot. You won’t be disappointed with this exotic cuisine.

THE LADY PANTHERS TAKE AWAY UNEXPECTED WINS

T

he Lady Panthers basketball team is headed towards success this season in 2012. Many factors play into the quality of the team, like experience and young morale. There are more advantages and fewer problems for the girls than expected for a new team. With head coach Jennifer Orlowski leading the team, and captains Brandi Weymuth (12), Courtney Claassen (11) and Samantha Roy (10), the girls have a different integrity than in the years past. According to Samantha Roy, the girls are “basically a new team,” and they keep improving. “We’ve improved a lot since last year, and we keep getting better,” said Roy.

With one month left, the girls are projected to do very well the rest of their season by the girls. In the first week of February, the girls had a tournament and six conference games. The girls are hoping to do well and continue their seasonal success, not just as a team, but as a group of friends, which helped their playing on the courts. “I like it a lot. This is the most fun season I’ve ever had,” said Mackenzie Stout (9).. The team is very new, which gives every player a chance to start new, and build the team up for a full season. The only problem is making the girls believe they can play as well as any other team. “The hardest part of the season has been convincing the girls they are a

team who can compete with the tougher teams. We’re blessed, and we have a lot of talent on the team,” said Orlowski.. With an __-__ record, the Lady Panthers basketball team is pulling a lot of upsets. At the Raytown tournament, they made a comeback and won by three points, and so far they are placed __ in their conference. On Feb. 6, the girls held their annual Pink Panther game, where they blew out Belton by 55 points, as well as raised money for breast cancer research. As the season a progress, the team’s chemistry on the courts has changed, and major differences can be seen. With the season winding down, the girls are looking to end their season on a good note with their young, but talented team.
