8 things don’t miss in
“Takua Pa Old Town” 1. Guan Yu Shrine This holy shrine commands the highest respect of Takua Pa’s residents. In the past, it served as a spiritual center when they returned to their hometown to join their families during the vegetarian festival. They would observe precepts, enjoy vegetarian dishes and pray for the blessing of Guan Yu. 2. BOON SOONG Iron Bridge This bridge was constructed during the heyday of Thailand’s tin-mining boom by the ‘BOON SOONG’ family, one of the best-known clans of Takua Pa district and owner of a mining concession and the BOON SOONG dredging company. The bridge is made from steel from decommissioned tin dredging vessels to serve as a commuting route for residents and workers in the neighborhood. With a length of 200 meters crossing the Takua Pa River, it provides the local people with a more convenient route from the main road to Takua Pa district and the company without the need for a lengthy drive.
3. Tao Ming School This old-time school was established through funds raised by Chinese millionaires engaged in the local tin-mining business to provide education, particularly Chinese language schooling, to Chinese children in Takua Pa district. Currently, the school serves as a recreational space for camping and various community-based activities.
4. Baan Khun In Constructed in 1917, Baan Khun In is a former residence of Khun Inthra Kiri (Choi Na Nakorn), a nephew of Phraya Senanuchit (Nuch Na Nakorn), who was acting governor-general of Takua Pa town and district chief of Takua Pa from 1921 – 1926. Built by Chinese artisans, the residence is now overseen by the Na Nakorn family and considered a valuable archeological site, featuring the Sino-Takuapa architectural style and traditional roofing. It underwent renovation in 1981, with its design left untouched and a new roof of wavy tiles.
5. Wat Senanuch Rangsan Formerly known as “Wat Mai Kampang,” Wat Senanuch Rangsan has a ordination hall modeled after the ordination hall of Wat Mahanparam in Bangkok. The ordination hall houses a white marble principal Buddha image in the Rattanakosin-Era style with Burmese artistic influences, and a pulpit erected during the reign of King Rama V. 6. Souvenirs and Local Dishes Takua Pa offers a wide variety of uncommon and traditional desserts, such as Morzee, Kiam Koy, Kanom Bueng and Ko Sui. However, the best-known dessert of the town that absolutely can’t be missed is “Tao Sor,” which also makes a popular souvenir. This delectable dessert is perfectly paired with coffee, tea and a nostalgic atmosphere.
7. BaBa Traditional Costume Another unique feature of Takua Pa town is its exquisite Ba Ba traditional costume. The town is home to Andaman Coast Ba Ba Society, where visitors can learn about the background of this fascinating traditional costume and browse through the extensive Ba Ba collection.
8. Takua Pa Walking Street Takua Pa Walking Street also known as the cultural street is held annually from November – May, every Sunday from 15.00 – 20.00 hrs. against the beautiful architectural backdrop of Takua Pa town. Located on Sri Takua Pa Road, the Walking Street always enchants visitors.
