Porto de Phuket Painting Contest 2019
Award: 1st runner up of ‘Porto de Phuket’ painting contest 2019. ‘Cherng Talay Samphan’ is the name of a painting by Kantara Utuchkul, a 12-year old Phuket girl. The painting was entered in a contest under the theme of ‘My Cherng Talay’. The contest was held to promote the Cherng Talay sub district; its culture, art and community.

aywat Areerob, the newly appointed Assistant Secretary
to Deputy Minister of Public Health, has been in politics for more than 30 years, with two terms as a Member of Parliament, ensuring that Phuket people have a clear voice to lead them to a better quality of life in society.
What services have you had experience in before? I have always loved doing community service, charities. I started by establishing ‘Rak Rawai’ (Love Rawai) to take care of people and the environment in the small sub-district of Rawai, and then expanded to provincial level.

Describe your political roles in the past
What are your current political obligations?
In 2007, I was appointed by the Democrat Party to be a candidate as a Member of Parliament for Phuket. At that moment, Phuket was considered as a single constituency with two members, and K. Thossaphon Theppabut and I were elected. Again in 2011, I got the majority vote for a second term until the Parliament’s dissolution in 2013.
After the dissolution [of parliament] General Prayut Chan-Ocha led the caretaker government until the latest elections of February 2019. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a seat this time. However, when the Democratic Party formed part of the coalition government, I was appointed as Assistant Secretary to Deputy Minister of Public Health, under Dr. Satit Pitutecha.
What’s your vision of the future? Same as everyone, I really want to see Thailand progress, I want to see prosperity - similar to developed countries. But in order to achieve this, we need the help and support from every sector and party.
How do you develop your leadership roles?

I have been a member of the Democrat Party for a long time - since 1986 - and have had experience in many roles. Also being a Member of Parliament for two terms has allowed me to learn from many talented leaders and I seized on this as inspiration.

Who is your role model and why? I would say many people, but the best one would be K. Chuan Leekpai, the current Speaker of Parliament. He is a role model for many people on many sides, especially for his honesty. He considers the nation’s benefit as his main priority. I myself have had opportunities to discuss his ethics and have realized that he keeps working for the nation and tries his best to develop the country and has never left the people behind. What needs to be developed in Phuket? Phuket need to be improved in three ways: First is the traffic crisis, we should have a better public transportation system, by bus, sky train or any other facilities to support locals and tourists. Second would be education. We now have a population of about 1.4 million in Phuket with a million non-registered people. Your motto? Like K. Chuan my motto is honesty of course. I have faith in, and respect K. Chuan so much, he is so kind, honest and tries to alleviate the suffering of his people.
What are you the most proud of, being a politician? It’s all about how I can be the representative for Phuket people to solve their problems and listen to their ideas, to coordinate with the government and instigate ways to develop the city and the government’s health services.

With your current roles and responsibilities, what can you do for Phuket? I am quite aware of the island’s issues already. So with my position, I am sure I understand and will try my best to improve these problems and to make sure people get proper medical services such as hospitals, medical professionals or even equipment. However, the most important thing is health; we need to educate people on how to live and eat healthily.

Charity Dinner Open Your Heart by Lions Club On Saturday 15th June 2019 – Lions Club of Phuket Pearl held the charity dinner “Open Your Heart” at Maikhao Garden Grill & Restaurant (MBC Condotel). ately, a ‘Family by JW’ program was held at the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa to celebrate an outstanding array of activities which included a once-in-a-lifetime swimming Master Class with Stephanie Rice, one of the best-known competitive swimmers in the world. With her stunning performance in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she won three gold medals and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia. 28

What is a typical day like in Australia?
What age were you when you started swimming?
Who is your favourite sports hero?
A typical day in Australia is waking up around 7 a.m., enjoying a healthy breakfast, exercise, meditation and then usually I get into some office work. Then spending good quality time with my family in the afternoon and the evening - make a healthy dinner together, that’s a typical day for me.
I started swimming at around six months old. I learned to swim as a baby and progressed all the way through. Then I started doing squad training around the age of seven or eight and started taking it seriously at 13, when I was really committed to be an Olympic swimmer.
When I was growing up, I always looked up to and admired Suzy O’ Neal. She’s an Australian swimmer and has won Olympic gold medals. I wanted to be able to go to the Olympics and win medals just like her. Besides swimming, I really like what she was doing in the media and she had these amazing opportunities, so I really wanted to be like her.
Are you excited to be invited to teach the young children @ Family by JW Campus event?
How did you become a professional swimmer?
Yes, I’m really excited to teach the children here at JW Marriott Phuket. It’s such a rewarding experience for me to do a Master Class with the kids and to share my swimming skills and then pass them onto the next generation. Especially to do it at such a beautiful hotel, it’s been so special.
To be a professional swimmer, an Olympic swimmer, it requires a lot of dedication, consistent swimming. We trained almost 50 weeks over a 52week year which is a lot of hours. But I’ve always loved it and have had such a passion for it and really wanted to be an Olympian, so I worked very hard.
What is your favourite sports quote? When it comes to quotes, I’ve always liked things that are quite mindful. So one of my favorite quotes is ‘Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve which is Napoleon Hill’s quote. That’s all about whatever you believe in your mind, if you believe it, totally you can do it. So you have to believe in your mind first.

Who do you wish to watch you perform? When I was at the Beijing Olympics, I just wanted my family there. They’re the ones who have seen me train day after day, year after year. They understand the highs and the lows and they were fully committed, so I was really fortunate to have all of my family there watching me in Beijing. And of course my coach, who was someone that I really felt so blessed to have as part of my life. So yes, my coach and my family.
What skills or talents are essential to being a successful swimmer? To be a successful swimmer, dedication and consistency are very important. Doing things you sometimes don’t want to do, like waking up early in the

morning for training or when you’re tired from school going to training in the afternoon, you have to definitely be consistent and be dedicated. You also need to have a passion for something inside you that you really want to achieve. So those two things are really important.
What is your favourite food to eat the night before a big competition? I always really want something quite simple, rice with a little bit of meat or tuna or something like that with some vegetables. Not a lot of sauces nor spices since I didn’t want to have anything to upset my system. So, something really plain the night before and I always make sure I have a good breakfast on the day of the competition.
What mental tools do you use under pressure? When it comes to sports and performance and pressure, not a lot of people are able to handle the mental pressure that goes along with performance and expectation. So I think it’s really important to believe in yourself, believe in your ability to do well - that usually comes from training really hard. And making sure you have a really good supports around you that are going to be proud of you and happy for you. Regardless of the outcome, that definitely takes a bit of pressure off.
What do you do to keep fit? I am a vegan, so I don’t need any meat or dairy products and that definitely helps me stay healthy.

What three words would you share with young kids who would like to be professional swimmers? So three words that I’d like to share with other kids that are also hoping to become an Olympian or an athlete at the professional level would be do something that you’re passionate about. Because you need to have an inner passion to help you gone through the harder days, when you’re tired or when something goes wrong. Definitely having a passion to believe in yourself, mentally have the ability and know that you’ve got the confidence to do well. And having a really good support system around you whether your family, friends or coaches. Pick your support system that will support you regardless, that’s really important.
Anything else that you would like to say to your fans? I’m just so grateful to be here in Thailand and to stay at the JW Marriott here in Phuket, it’s so beautiful. Thank you so much for welcoming me and I hope there’ll be some amazing Thai swimmers at the Olympics in the future.
I eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. I also try to eat local food. I get to enjoy some of the beautiful things like flowers and amazing produce and plants that come especially from Thailand which is really nice. I exercise almost every day, meditate every morning. Having mindfulness, exercise and the right kind of food is really great.
If you could play another sport what would it be? When I was growing up, I really liked hockey, also I was picked for the Junior Olympic cycling team so I did a lot of sports. I don’t think I would have wanted to have done any other sport because I did a lot when I was a kid. And I chose something which was my favourite, so I wouldn’t have done anything else. But I really enjoy having the opportunity to play both hockey with a team and then cycling as well.

Telling your charity of Lion plans of this year Our main plan comes from our headquarters in Chicago. For this year, we have 5 main topics which are Hunger, Diabetes, Youth Cancer, Environment and Regions which is similar to every year, just slightly difference according to the request of the people’s needs. We have local special activities, especially for Thailand. For this year in our district 310B, which is southern Thailand, we have “Peace Poster Contest” which is international, also we have “Saranukrom Competition” (Thai Junior Royal Encyclopedia contest) for local schools which is still in process. We take care about the youth, especially for education. We support children from underprivileged families, also local people, so they have an opportunity to be educated, this is very important.

Lifestyle - Charity Dr. Sumet, has joined us every year and led our club in Thailand. The 2nd Project is “Peace Poster Contest (Journey of Peace)” which is international, the winner’s work is to be sent to Chicago and will be presented in an annual International Convention which will be held in Singapore this year, and we hope that Thai Children can be the winner, which would be nice. However, it doesn’t matter what nationality or religion you are, we are all together - we try to save the world and people should believe in humanity and help each other.

What motivates you? What are your personal goals? I am proud to be a member of Lions Club International, for the last 5 years. I’ve been motivated with what Lions Club International is doing. This is the big community which contains more than 1.4 million Lions around the world, in almost every country. This club was started by Melvin Jones who was the insurance broker in Chicago for over 100 years ago and now spread all around the world in different countries, different regions. Lions Club International made such a great thing, our motto is “We Serve” and we have tried our best during the past century. The best motivation is our activities, when we help children with cancer, when we help people with diabetes, when we fund scholarships to schools or distribute free glasses, to upgrade their education on necessary level and many other things which we made for our society and I am proud to be a part of it. My goal is to continue doing what our club does for our district, with my soul, together with Lions club International.
What have you been doing to keep up to date? We have International and Local projects which I mentioned already. During this fiscal year which started in July, we did 2 activities. One is the local “Thai Royal Encyclopedia Project” for Thailand, we invited local schools and distributed encyclopedias, then children can prepare for the contest, this to encourage children and pupils to read more and do their own exploring and research. This project has been established by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej who initially allowed Lions Club to Thailand. Also his secretary,

What do you expect to be earning in 3 years?
Most of our activities are about coordinating with local government. For example, we join to “Disable’s Day” with Phuket Disabled People’s Association at Rajabhat University. We support “Children’s Day” which is held every year in January by distribution toys, candies or cakes for children which make them happy. We also communicate with local municipality to be aware on their needs. Last year, Lions with Health Department and Municipality, donated 2 AED machines which help to restart the heart in case of emergency - one for local emergency car, another for local small hospital. Keeping in touch with government can give us the ideas on who’s in need and if we are able to help, we try to do.
I am very proud to get this position this year, so thanks to our district governor for selecting me and hope we can moving forward together. Actually, we have informal discussion about the Region Chairman position and if the governor is willing to trust to me, I would be ready and happy to help them. Anyway, each Lions is so equal doesn’t matter what position you hold, president, governor or simple members, all of them have the same goal.

What is the long-term strategy of the charity? Long term strategy is what I said, we try to serve the community and we will continue doing what Melvin John started. The most important for us is to keep the quality of services and quantity of members. Our members have to be kind and right, that’s why we keep open for new members. What challenges are you looking for in this charity? The global challenge is serve and we try to do our best. Every year we have our fundraising by having a Charity Dinner and we did quite well for the past 2 years. We appreciate all the sponsors and people who joined, with these people we are able to collect some funds and use them for the right place, in the right time and for the right people. We try to continue doing the fundraising and find the people who really need help. In Lions Club, we try to do everything to serve people and for the benefit of our organization.

And the last one is how to design the gestures, because when we transform a mascot into a souvenir, it has to be in many postures and characters. So it was a long process until we finally got “NONGJOONG”.
What’s next for “NONGJOONG”?

The origin and purpose of the Phuket Mascot Project Due to the change of tourists’ behavior, we now have Gen C instead of Baby Boomer, Gen Y or even Millennium, which makes the tourism industry even more complicated - the “Sun Sea Sand” might not attract enough. Therefore, the Phuket Tourism Association has an idea of creating the new content to reach all people of any age or gender - the mascot is the answer. Since we needed various ideas from all over Thailand, we then established the Phuket Mascot Project and got a lot of feedback from the designers with 230 design works joining the contest. After the long elaborate process, we finally got the winner named “NONGJOONG”.
The meaning of the Mascot During the contest, we let the designers explain their ideas and the stories of each work, finally the selected one is the “Lobster”. In term of names, it connects to “Phuket Lobster” which is compatible with Phuket. This lobster was named by the designer as “NONGJOONG” since his close friend, a black sea urchin, cannot pronounce his name correctly, so instead of “NONGKUNG” he says “NONGJOONG”. After that, we named the urchin as “CHAOKUAY” but the main character still be “NONGJOONG”.
Why “NONGJOONG” win the contest? First of all, let me tell you about the process of contest. From more than 200 pieces of work, we used the local judges for the first round and we got pearl, pineapples, lobster or even Hokkien Noodle. Then for the final round, the professional designers had to consider this into 2-3 topics. First is about the scale, we have to understand that the drawing and the actual figure would be different. In the drawing, it might look good, look cute, but when we actually create it, the scale must shrink or stretch out, so it might not be as cute as a drawing. Therefore, the experienced designers had to decide if it would be flexible enough or not. Second is the suitability of being a mascot. For example, Japan has a lot of black bears, so the bear can be a mascot to present that area. In the same way, we have to think about what can remind tourists of Phuket?
The mascot would be represented in 2 dimensions, first is with someone inside and movable - to walk in the parade and join with tourists or even attend the events, inbound and outbound. Second, we plan to make this mascot in various characters i.e., sunbathing, surfing or running, then display in tourist attraction spots. The next step is to develop into a souvenir format such as umbrellas, T-Shirts and postcards. So if anyone has some interesting ideas and wish to use “NONGJOONG”, you can contact the association for the permission but the most important thing is you cannot change the scale of the mascot. And you will see “NOONGJOONG” in the Patong Carnival this year definitely.
CONCEPT NONGJOONG is a 3 year old lobster boy, born in the middle of the Andaman Sea. A naughty, food-loving boy who is willing to explore and learn new things - tasty food, fun activities, and beautiful scenery. He plans to visit every corner of Phuket and is proud to present his experiences to friends around the world. He follows the sea urchin, his close friend with unclear accent, we called him “NONGJOONG”.

Since the population living in Phuket is quite diverse, the Gypsies, Chinese, Malaya, Thai and foreigners - hence, the mascot could not be very specific. The “Lobster” is the most common thing which has been promoted for Phuket for a long while. Due to the unique character, good image, easy to remember and it has never been yet used as the mascot anywhere in the world. Also using the new generation boy who is willing to learn, is eager for new experiences, and has a good relationship with his surroundings. So we created a cute lobster boy, adorable and colorful named “NONGJOONG”.

hen you hear the Phuket Philatelic Museum some of you won’t know what type of Phuket museum this place is. Don’t worry we can tell you that the Phuket Philatelic Museum is also known as the Phuket Post Office museum.
Perhaps a Post Office museum won’t be on your list of things to do or places to visit in Phuket. However there are plenty of people who might actually enjoy this unusual museum. The Phuket Post Office museum is located in the old Phuket Post Office in Phuket City which of course is the most suitable venue for a philatelic museum in Phuket. When you approach the old Phuket Post Office you will see the old sign which reads Post & Telegraph Office. Below that ssign Philatelic you will also see a banner which clearly states that the Phuket Philate Museum is located inside.

Thalang Road is known as Phuket’s ‘historical road’ and is located in Phuket City Municipality. It was formerly the trading center of Phuket and most of the houses located along this road were owned by wealthy Phuket people. The houses were built in Sino-Portuguese styles which reflect unique combinations between Chinese and Portuguese architectures. Krabi Road is in the old town area has the Phuket Thai Hua Museum, originally a
Chinese school. It features exhibits about the history of Phuket, concentrating particularly on the role Chinese immigrants played in Phuket’s development. The museum is located at on the end of Krabi Road. Phang-Nga Road has the On-On Hotel, Phuket’s oldest hotel established in 1929. The other buildings in this area such as the restaurants, banks and shophouses all have original Sino Portuguese architecture. Dibuk Road runs directly to the north of Thalang Road and is home to a number of popular eating establishments. This road also features a range of coffee shops. Ratsada Road is alway busy in business time, many bank offices are located here. And you can found a hidden museum “Thavorn Museum” inside Thavorn Hotel.

With over 25 years of service at ONYX Hospitality Group and Amari Hotels
P
ierre-André hails from a family of Swiss hoteliers and restaurateurs. He graduated from École Hôtelière de Lausanne and joined Amari in 1993. He was recognized with the prestigious ‘Young Hotelier of the Year’ award from the International Hotels and Restaurants Association in 1998 and was General Manager of Amari Watergate Bangkok for close to 12 years.
With over 25 years of service at ONYX Hospitality Group, and Amari Hotels Pierre-André is nowadays the company’s Regional Vice-President of Operations for Southern Thailand, Vietnam and the Maldives, providing leadership for the group’s growing portfolio of hotels and resorts in these fast-growing regions.
What motivated you to go into the hotel industry? My parents. They own hotels and restaurants in Switzerland, so I grew up into this industry and have it in my DNA. This is where I started. Afterward, I went to the École Hôtelière de Lausanne which is one of the top schools in the world for hospitality.
Who inspires you and why? It’s a long story, but my first big mentor was Mr. Kurt Rufli, who was the CEO of Amari hotels and resorts. He gave me my first chance by my coming here to Thailand in 1992. He inspired me by
being a fantastic leader, leading at the front, leading by example when I was at a young age and early on in my career. He gave me the opportunity to develop myself, to develop my skills and made sure that I could grow up in the organization. Nowadays we are still friends.
What were your career steps before coming to Amari Phuket? After finishing the École Hôtelière de Lausanne I helped my parents in our restaurants and hotels in Switzerland. After that I came over here to Thailand, worked for the Mandarin Oriental and the Amari Airport Hotel. Then I went to the Amari Pattaya as the GM and came back to our flagship hotel in Bangkok, Amari Watergate. Finally, being here for six years at the Amari Phuket, our flagship resort, as the Regional Vice President for South Thailand, Maldives and Vietnam.
What is essential for you to be successful as a manager? What are the key points? The few key points are being hard working and passionate in what you strive for. What is your favourite part about working in the hotel business? My most favourite part of working in hospitality is to see happy people - happy team members, and happy guests, those make me happy. So being in an industry which is diversified and cosmopolitan inspires me the most to work in hospitality.
How do you stay up to date with trends and regulations in the industry? With plenty of things. I believe in learning and growing, I believe in working with the

Also working with people like colleagues, the Tourist Authority of Thailand or people from overseas to follow trends in general and anticipating trends, being at the forefront. Sometimes I’m inspired by my own team here because there’s a lot of things that we don’t know, if we don’t ask. If you ask you get it. You need to adjust yourself to current and upcoming trends but I think being inspired and try to anticipate trends is the most important thing nowadays.
What are the main differences between hospitality in Western and Asian countries? Actually, everyone in our industry is doing the best they can. The only thing we have an advantage of here in Asia, especially here in Thailand, is the amount of people that we can afford. Compared with Switzerland, for example, there’s a lot of positions that they cannot

afford but fortunately here in Asia in Thailand we can make it. And I think what we can find here in Thailand through hospitality is a feeling from the heart which is really unique. In general, I would say there’s not much difference between one country and the other but here in Thailand we have a cutting-edge when it comes to hospitality.
What do you think will be the biggest challenge hotel companies will face within the next 10 years? I think there are a few; one is technology, also climate change will be a big thing. Another one as well will be the geo source of how people are travelling today. That will be different. In the future people will move much more at short notice. Those are the few points that I would think will be important in
the next few years. And again you never know in terms of technology what could happen. If you look back over the last 10 years, a lot of things have changed and I think a lot of things will happen in the next 10 years too.
What advice would you give to someone looking to follow in your footsteps? To follow in my footsteps? Just be passionate, never give up. Being happy every day when you wake up, then going to work to inspire other people is very important. It’s not only about yourself but if you can inspire other people it means you are doing a big part of your job to step up into the hospital industry, so good luck.
