Charlotte Brennan I am a 19 year old passionate photographer, studying photography in Blackpool and the Fylde College. I have always had a strong interest in the arts and photography for years but have only pursued and developed my love for photography in the past two years. I am an eclectic photographer, my work ranges from street and music photography and digital manipulation to experimental and cameraless photography. My passion for art is as great as my passion for photography and I am often inspired by artist’s work as much as photographers. I prefer to work with a digital format but I have often used 35mm black and white film and experimented with large and medium formats. I spend a lot of time making prints in the darkroom and experimenting with film, outside of the digital projects, as well as cameraless experimentation with scanography and creating cyanotypes. I have developed a great interest in artistic and experimental photography and find it is one of the most satisfying fields I have worked on, as no two results will be the same and the end shots can be somewhat unpredictable. In this project I wanted to explore movement and shape through the medium of different materials, including oil, dye, water, paint and smoke. I have always been inspired by Zena Holloway’s underwater fashion work, the look and flow o the material in the water is beautiful. I wanted to create a similar feeling, like that of being transported into an abstract world, using liquid experimentation instead of solid materials. I used various liquids in a body of water and found myself captivated at how the materials instantly shaped into these mysterious, unique forms. Along with liquids, I have also looked at the forms and shapes of smoke in a similar way. I find myself always looking at inspiration from photographers, old and new, finding new techniques or ideas to influence my photography. A range of my work can be found on my website www.charlotte-brennan.com as well as contact details. My facebook page is www.facebook.com/charlottebrennanphotography

Joe Whitmore

I am 20 years old and a freelance photographer based in Leicester. I stumbled across my passion for photography through my other passion, BMX, when I was 16 and taking photos of my friends when we went out for a ride one day. Ever since I have always looked at things through a photographic eye. I studied a two year National Diploma course at Leicester College and came out with a triple distinction grade. I decided not to go to university as I did some work experience with other photographers around the area while at college on my days off, and was advised that if you have a passion and a style, then why not just jump straight in? So that’s exactly what I did. I have been a freelance assistant for two years now, I have assisted photographers such as Moy Williams (Manchester), Rick Gem from Still Photography (Manchester) Jan Baldwin (London) and Jake Seal (Milton Keynes) to name a few. I am gaining as much experience and knowledge as I can whilst I assist, so that when I have my own work to do I put everything I have learnt into practice.

14

As for my photography, I’d say that portraiture is my favourite field to work in, it’s just such a versatile subject matter. Every person I have photographed is different in the way they look and act on and off camera, whether they are a model or just a regular person who isn’t so comfortable infront of the lens. I also enjoy BMX photography, as I have been riding since I was 14. Automotive, landscape, band and nightclub photography are also amongst my favourites. I have been shooting in clubs for over a year now, not just in Leicester, but Loughbrough and Leeds as well. I have photographed some pretty big artists such as Goldie, Jakwob and Westwood. Recently I have just built up my website - http://www.jwhitmorephoto.co.uk/ This showcases what I think is some of my best work from day one. I also have a facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/JoeWhitmorePhotography - This is where all my work goes ,from photoshoots with models, cars, riding trips and band promotion, anything to do with my photography will be on there. Support is always welcome and I’d like to hear feedback from you about my work. Please ‘LIKE’ my facebook page to keep up to date with my progress and latest work.

Livvy Hukins My name is Livvy and I am a photographer from the middle of nowhere - otherwise known as the Kent countryside. I live in a small annexe on a farm surrounded by acres and acres of sheep and grass. I’m shy on first impressions, I laugh a little too often and I’m a sucker for chocolate cake. I am a realist and a dreamer. I’m a quiet observer. I find beauty in the little things, like the curl of an eyelash or the flash of a smile. I am fascinated by the way a camera captures a moment and turns it into an instant memory. I take inspiration from my own memories, preserved in the shoe box of snapshots that I keep under my bed. I always aim for my photographs to feel like a fond memory, one look and you could remember that particular moment - what it felt like, the sounds, the smells, the tastes… I suppose my photography started at a very early age, as documenting life has been an almost lifelong obsession.

16

Professionally I have been shooting for two years and I’m still working my way up, still assisting other photographers and still taking on unpaid work to get my name out there. I photograph people. I don’t consider myself a landscape photographer by any means, but being a fan of fresh air and natural lighting, locations often play an important part in my photography. In recent fashion themed work I am still embedding feelings of memories and an element of ‘getting back to nature’. In a very hippy way, I believe when you are at one with the earth, you become content in yourself. Go-Zilla - Album Review We were lucky enough to review Go-Zilla’s versatile and fast paced self titled debut album, ‘Go-Zilla’. Now permanently on our iPods, it’s a blend of varied musical genres. If you haven’t already, go listen to this album, now! Album - Go-Zilla (self-titled) Rating - 9/10 Go-Zilla are a London and Kent based, three piece Rock, Dance & Dub group made up of Jon Youseman (Vocals & Synth), Chris Jones (Vocals & Guitar) & Glenn Rice (Vocals & Drums). They have been together officially since May 2012, and have already had radio play on BBC Radio Unsigned, The High Tea Cast and Hoxton FM. They have also been lucky enough to headline at the Camden Underworld, and supported Sonic Boom Six on the 11th February. Their debut album was released as a free download on 3rd February and is self-titled ‘Go-Zilla’. The song Camden Queen is a great mix of Rock, Dance and vocals that fit over the top effortlessly. It has the distinct sound of the electric guitar and drums throughout the song, keeping you gripped purely through the tempo. The song then fades out and back in with a lot more of a dance aspect right up to the end. The next stand out song is Get On The Dancefloor, which starts of as a normal Pop-Rock song morphing effortlessly from nowhere into a Dance, Dub track. Retaining the Pop and Rock elements throughout and seamlessly transitioning between the two styles.

20

Throwdown was their first single, released on the 26th December along with their first professional music video. For the first 15 seconds or so you hear very heavy guitars and drums, with very subtle lyrics, then it explodes into a montage of Rock and Dub with aspects of Dubstep thrown in for good measure. To break the song up they use dance rhythms, which work well with the whole Rock, Dub genre. With the distinctive voice of Betty Be Famous starting the song, you can’t help but find yourself nodding along with the lyrics and backing track. Again, Go-Zilla effortlessly mix between Rock, Dance and Dub and create this great track. Towards the end of the track they once again fade in and out into a calming dance beat, with the Rock drums slowly building up to a fast tempo crescendo. All in all this is a great and listenable album by Go-Zilla, which is made even better by the fact it’s available as a free download. We look forward to hearing what else Go-Zilla come out with in the future.

Robert Bearsby We caught up with a young and talented singer from Kent and had a little chat about his music and how he got to where he is today. 1. When did you first start singing and playing guitar? I actually first started playing the guitar when I was about eight years old but I quit because my teacher tried to get me to sing and play old McDonnald to her which terrified me. At the time I wanted to be Angus Young from AC/DC so singing didn’t interest me at all. I started singing when I was about 15 and for the most part was just told to shut up and stop singing by my friends and family, which I think just spurred me on even more. My sister still denies that she used to tell me I couldn’t sing, haha. 2. What was the first song you ever wrote? It really was quite terrible, I can’t remember the name of it, but the lyrics didn’t make any sense at all and it changed every time I played it. 3. What year did you move to Australia? I moved to New Zealand in 2010 and spent two years living and working there. I then let a friend of mine persuade me to move to Australia with him about 8 months ago which is where I completely ran out of money and had to busk my way back home. 4. While busking back from Australia what was the weirdest place you performed? I would have to say probably Fortitude Valley in Brisbane, it’s full of night clubs which is great for busking because people are normally really generous after a few drinks, but it also means that there are a lot of drug dealers and prostitutes. I have had people steal money from my guitar case, kick me and my guitar, throw up next to me, start fighting almost on top of me and all sorts of random stuff. 5. What was the best place you went while busking back? Probably Hong Kong, It’s a crazy place because it’s just high rise buildings, neon lights, smog and bamboo scaffolding as far as you can see... I don’t think the Chinese are very familiar with busking though.

6. What was the hardest part of having to busk back? I used to wake up every morning and think “what do I want to eat today...” then I’d go and busk and see if I could make enough money to eat it... I lost 9kg in three months, which probably wasn’t very good for me, but I can honestly say I was happy the whole time. Living off of my guitar was very rewarding. 7. We understand you have an EP coming out soon, can you tell us what it’s called? Yes I do, I am in the studio at the moment putting it together which is a lot more work than I anticipated. It’s going to be named after the tattoo I got whilst I was abroad “These are the good old days”. 8. Do you have any collaborations on the EP? Yes, I have been really lucky in the past couple of months. I have John Parker from Nizlopi playing on a couple of tracks, Sophie and Verity who play the violin and cello for Bastille working on a couple of tracks with me and then the whole thing is being mastered by Christian Wright who has mastered Ed Sheeran and Ben Howard. It’s very intimidating working with people who are so incredible at what they do. I’m almost too scared to play in front of them! 9. When can we expect to hear your EP? We have loads to do still but it’s hopefully going to be out in time for the summer tour that I’m doing in June. I cannot wait for the moment that I can look myself up on ITunes! 10. Where can people find your music and your latest updates? I have a Facebook page www.facebook.com/robertbearsbymusic which is where normally post, I am pretty rubbish with twitter but I have a twitter page too @robbearsbymusic

Darcy

Darcy is one of the newer artists on the scene. After taking six months out to ‘rebrand’ she’s back with a brand new image and an even bigger sound. We hear she’s also in the studio working on an EP, whilst studying hard at the British Academy of New Music. On discussing her music she says ‘the difficult thing is, you can’t really allow for any ambiguity, and that’s all I was... ambiguous. No one knew where I was coming from and more importantly no one knew where I was going, so now I’ve come back and I’m hoping my message is loud and clear’. Although she originally studied to be in musicals (she attended Sylvia Young for 10 years before teaching herself guitar at 17) Darcy’s music can most easily be described as ethereal, enchanting and haunting. Not one to shy away from criticism, she describes her upcoming EP as ‘The journey of a destructive relationship, and the reflection upon it’.

30

Now officially relaunched (her new music pages went live on the 10th March), Darcy is due to headline her first gig in almost 8 months, alongside other fantastic artists such as Daniel Greenwood, Thats what she said and Georgina-Lauren Aden. The year ahead only gets more exciting for the indie-soul artist, who is playing at Latitude (date tbc). Let’s wish her all the best. www.facebook.com/DarcyOfficialUK www.soundcloud.com/darcyofficialuk Instagram + twitter:

The City Is Ours - Album Review The captivating band The City Is Ours have just released their latest EP “Here After. Formed in 2011 they are bringing a fresh sound to the Rock/Alternative scene. Their new 5 track EP is quickly catching the attention of the industry and we were fortunate to be amongst the first to hear it. Album - Here After EP Rating - 8/10 The City Is Ours are a very tight Rock/Alternative band with clear influences from people such as Paramore and Deaf Havana as well as influences on certain tracks from Funeral For A Friend. This put together makes for a great EP. All five tracks have a great sound to them with the drums and guitar really bringing something to the unmistakable vocals of Vicky Mackenzie. You can really tell that these songs have been crafted over time to get them just right, and many hours have gone in, in the studio, practicing and recording them. The slight change in singing style throughout each song really makes the EP flow and keeps you listening to see where the track goes next. The lyrics are deep and meaningful and Vicky sings them in that exact way, which makes you sit up and listen.

32

Out of all of the five tracks, we really liked ‘Anything At All’ we enjoyed this song because of the upbeat style of the drums and guitar. The track starts with the intro of drums and guitar, played by Conor and Billy respectively. Vicky’s transition between heavy and softer lyrics throughout the song makes for a track that sits very nicely on the ears. Overall we like this EP from The City Is Ours, and if you like rock then you should definitly give this a listen. https://soundcloud.com/thecityisours/sets/hereafter-e-p

All Round Clothing We launched an original collection in February 2012, but officially launched with our new website and brand in November 2012 and have since added to our range continuously. In this short time we’ve attracted names like Mallory Knox to the brand, who now wear our clothing on tour and in shoots. The brand developed out of a passion for clothing and the fashion industry. All of us had previously worked different jobs in the fashion industry for major outlets, from sales to styling, but found there was no opportunity for a creative outlet. As a result, we created All Round to give ourselves an opportunity to put our creativity in the fashion industry to the test and create a strong brand to be proud of. Our welcome page for the website demonstrates the motto that we like to live by, ‘Take your passion, make it happen’. We use this because we think it’s true of anything, whatever it is that you want to achieve in your life, and for us that is to create a brand to be proud of, you can do if you just put the time in and believe in it. To start our initial collection we created the basic pieces you’d see in any wardrobe, t-shirts, hoodies, jumpers and the like. As we grow we plan to extend our items into genre specific ranges and occasional wear. Our squirrel motif is a staple of most of our pieces and important to our brand, as it represents something quintessentially British. We also donate a portion of the profits from the sales of our handmade cuddly squirrels to The Nature Trust in order to help save the now endangered red squirrel.

‘Fuck Triangles, Be All Round’ http://shop.allroundartiste.com/all-products/16-fktriangles.html This was one of the first pieces we created in the new collection, and was designed with one thing in mind. We were just fed up with seeing triangles on every t-shirt from every independent brand. We want our brand to stand out, and couldn’t believe that people would just regurgitate work or designs other people had already done. ‘Leaves Crew’ http://shop.allroundartiste.com/mens/22-leavescrew.html This one is all about the seasons. It will change with the seasons and the autumn/winter jumper is deliberately oversized and super soft to make sure you stay warm and comfy all winter. If you look closely, you’ll even notice that the squirrel is smiling!

‘All Round, All Over’ http://shop.allroundartiste.com/all-products/25-allround-all-over.html We wanted to start making a move into creating t-shirts that weren’t just a standard sized screen, so this is our first all over print of our trademark Squirrels and Acorns. It’s also a custom cut t-shirt just for us, designed for a fitted look and it’s super comfy 100% cotton. We’ve got a lot more on the way including a new range of accessories and summer clothing, but we pride ourselves on quality so all of our newer items are custom made so that we can be in control from start to finish and create a product we’re truly proud of.

Top Crown Clothing Top Crown Clothing, Founded Late 2011, Established: Anaheim, California, US. Top Crown Clothing is a company founded by two cousins who shared similar ideas about creating a clothing brand that was different yet unique. It all just started with ideas and goals we set out for ourselves about starting up the brand but we knew we had to keep a positive view and thrive for success, no matter the obstacles, so our company could grow and one day be nationwide. Until now, not much has changed, through struggles we have managed to keep going, picking things up as we go and knowing there is still much to be learned. This type of industry does have its stressful moments, but one thing is for sure, we are not giving up on the dream. In life anything is possible, as long as you work hard towards the goal. TOP CROWN CLOTHNG logo is a CROWN. The CROWN represents power, not only as it would to a king, but also to everyone supporting our brand and who wears it. If there is no crown then there is No king. Our slogan is “EVERY DAY IS A BATTLE” Become your own king in this world and lead with us. Our very first tees where released in the beginning of February 2012. Getting the company going was our biggest challenge especially because we were new at this kind of business. Yet with the help of family, friends, and the use of social networking, we were able to get our name known and little by little people started recognizing our brand name and logo, which is one of the principle goals in the clothing industry. Now people recognize the brand just by its logo, which sets it apart from other brands out there. Top Crown Designs are made to give people a fresh look no matter what you’re into. Whether you’re into skateboarding, BMX, the music industry from rap to hip-hop, we really have something for everyone. We supply tanks, t-shirts, hoodies, crewnecks, snapbacks and beanies as well. In the near future as we grow and expand more apparel and accessories will be available from custom

Real. Clothing

Real. Clothing came about during the Summer of 2012. We decided that the only way we could make clothing we love is by making it ourselves. We have all been fans of the independent UK scene for a long time, and decided we wanted to be a part of it by creating our own brand. And so Real. Clothing was born. Our aim is to add something new and unique to the worldwide streetwear scene, and to continue to produce high quality clothing that both ourselves, and our customers love. As long as we are producing and providing people with modern, fresh and innovative clothing, that people are excited to wear, we are happy. We are a personable company, run by a small and dedicated team who provide all our customers with the care and attention they deserve. With Real. we aim to keep ourselves grounded and keep our designs representing our original passion that led us to forming the company. We believe that looking dope should be easy, and our range of products allow it to be just that, with brilliant quality and affordable prices that let us compete in the independent British street-wear market.

48

Our latest collection sees us bringing out bigger and better products and showing what we can really do. However, this is just the beginning for us, we have loads of exciting new projects coming up in the future, including a limited edition tie-dye/dip-dye collection in the summer, plus we will be exploring headwear and releasing a range of beanies and five-panels, all with our own unique twist on them. We will also be appearing at a number of pop-up markets this year and really pushing the brand. We hope that this year is going to be a big one for us.
