CREATIVE CONNECTIONS

A Compendium of Case Studies Showcasing Arts, Health & Well-being Initiatives in Wales July 2019

INTRODUCTION In the Spring of 2019 Public Health Network Cymru in partnership with the Arts Council for Wales held a number of ‘roadshow’ events to promote local and national initiatives that used the arts to promote health and well-being in Wales. There is a rapidly evolving evidence base on the ways in which the arts can influence both mental and physical health and well-being (see bibliography). The full spectrum of the arts are being employed in community and health settings including: Music: The benefits of music relate to both passive enjoyment and active participation. For example, singing for older people can affect morale, mental health-related quality of life, loneliness, anxiety and depression. Music is being used in a variety of settings ranging from intensive care to social care and the community. Interventions include recitals, drumming workshops and singing in choirs. Performing Arts: Including everything from theatre to dance the ‘performing arts’ can have benefits, including supporting emotional wellbeing.

Visual Arts and Crafts: Whether painting, sculpture, crafting or other forms of visual and tactile artistry these activities have long been adopted for rehabilitative and therapeutic value. Evidence shows that visual arts activities, of various kinds, can reduce depression and anxiety and increase confidence and self-esteem among adults. Poetry, Creative Writing & Storytelling: Both the spoken and written word are outlets and mediums for expressing and influencing different aspects of health and well-being from engaging and supporting people living with dementia, through to tackling key social and issues such as mental illness, homelessness and end of life care. This short guide aims to highlight the potential opportunities for Public Service Boards and their partner organisations to support their local Health & Well-being Plans by harnessing the inherent skills, expertise and willingness of the many dedicated individuals who are delivering innovative and exciting Arts, Health & Well-being initiatives throughout Wales.

Music Music in Hospitals & Care Cymru Music in Hospitals & Care (MiHC) brings interactive live music sessions to people who are receiving care or treatment in healthcare settings across the UK. We aim to make people feel good, one tune at a time. Music forms part of the social fabric of our lives. We all have a song or a favourite tune that reminds us of a special time or of a moment shared with someone else. Since 1948, MiHC has been privileged to contribute to and witness the magical moments that live music can bring to any kind of care setting. We’ve learned that sharing the experience of a live musical performance can help reduce levels of anxiety, pain and depression, as well as break down social and cultural barriers.
