World Humanitarian Day: One Humanity World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is held every year on 19th August to mobilise people to better support to those in need of humanitarian assistance and pay tribute to aid workers providing humanitarian services. With 130 million people worldwide dependant on humanitarian assistance in order to survive, UN agencies such as the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) used this year’s 2016 WHD to launch the ‘The World You’d Rather’ campaign, to highlight the situation of refugees and internally displaced persons.
At World Health Organisation, WHD was an opportunity to highlight the key initiatives and policies developed by the European Region Office (WHO EURO) to address migrant and refugee health. These include the strategy and action plan for refugee and migrant health as well as the Public Health Aspects of Migration in Europe (PHAME) project, which was developed within the policy framework of Health 2020. To find out more, subscribe to PHAME newsletter. At the European level, the European Commission expressed its concerns over the situation in Syria while honouring the work of humanitarian workers. This statement was released as The European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department Office has published its first volunteer vacancies database under the EU Aid Volunteers programme, providing practial support to humanitarian aid projects and contributing to strengthening local capacity and the resilience of disaster-affected communities. Go to the Full Fact website to read more about asylum seekers in the UK and Europe and take the Office of National Statistics (ONS) quiz ‘What are migration levels like in your area‘ before reading the ONS latest migration report for the UK.
