Low birth weight research presented at EuroHealthNet conference Representatives from Public Health Wales have shared the results of their research on reducing low birth weight at the EuroHealthNet Country Exchange Visit. Angela Jones, Consultant in Public Health for Cwm Taf Local Public Health Team, and Kathryn Ashton, Public Health Researcher, attended the EuroHealthNet conference in Paris on 12-13 June 2018. Angela Jones presented the findings from a range of evidence-based interventions undertaken in Cwm Taf which aimed to reduce the number of babies born at a low birth weight. These targeted the three main risk factors for low birth weight in Cwm Taf: teenage pregnancy, smoking and obesity.Following the introduction of these interventions the number of babies born at a low birth weight in Cwm Taf fell by 55 per year from 2012-2016. Angela Jones said: “Low birth weight is important as it is closely linked to increased infant mortality, developmental problems and life-limiting conditions. This research shows that targeting maternal risk factors has the potential to impact the number of babies born at a low birth weight. “It was exciting to be able to share the results of these interventions at an international event and showcase new public health research being undertaken in Wales.” The interventions presented at the EuroHealthNet conference were: • A multi-agency approach to reduce teenage pregnancy which included improved sexual health education and access to contraception targeted in areas with the highest teenage pregnancy rates. • The Models for Access to Maternal Smoking Cessation Services (MAMMS) which used a midwifery led flexible approach to smoking cessation • The “Bump Start” Healthy Lifestyle midwife and dietitian led weight management programme. In Focus Within Wales

This section highlights recent examples of Welsh activity within our borders. This could take the form of collaborations, events and other work related to improving health and wellbeing and reducing inequalities in Wales.

Hossana Ethiopia Link Event in Betsi A successful Grand Round international health event focusing on the Hossana Hospital Ethiopia Link was held on 25th June 2018 at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. The event, attended by medics, nurses, technicians and others with an interest in international health partnerships, provided an opportunity to hear about the fantastic work undertaken by Ethiopia Link colleagues at the Hossana Hospital, including providing practical assistance such as fixing their lift, adapting and mending medical devices, donating equipment and delivering training on managing critically ill adults and babies. It was clear from the presentations that the outputs of the Link work were mutually beneficial, as Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) staff had learnt a lot about tropical medicine and related topics from the productive working relationships and friendships formed. The event was also an opportunity to thank Dr Kit Chalmers for her inspirational leadership of the Ethiopia Link, which she now hands over to Dr Tom O’Driscoll.
