Welcome Welcome to the October issue of the IHCC European and international e-bulletin. This month’s issue will provide you with information on the 23rd Annual Meeting of WHO Regions for Health Network, the 66th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe and Welsh activity within and beyond Welsh borders, in addition to new publications and opportunities. 23rd Annual Meeting of WHO Regions for Health Network The World Health Organization’s Regions for Health Network (WHO RHN) held its 23rd annual meeting in Lithuania on the 22th-23rd September on the theme achieving a healthy, sustainable society and improving integration, inclusion and coherence at international, sub-national and regional levels. Opened by WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, this meeting was the opportunity for regions like Wales to exchange and explore collaborations in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. The Welsh delegation included Rebecca Evans AM, Minister for Social Services and Public Health; and Luke Rees, Youth Ambassador, Sport Wales. Public Health Wales presented on the the Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act as well as Public Health Wales’ Making a Difference report. 66th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe The 53 Member States of the World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Europe (WHO EURO) held its 66th Regional Committee meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark on the 12th–15th September 2016 to discuss accelerated action and stronger political commitment on refugee and migrant health, women’s health, sexual and reproductive health, non-communicable diseases, HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, integrated health services and the use of data in public health. Main highlights included a briefing on the Health in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and in relation with Health 2020 Strategy, as well as a resolution on a European strategy and action plan for refugee and migrant health. State of The European Union 2016 European Commission’s President Juncker presented his annual State of the European Union (EU) speech to the European Parliament on the 14th September. For EU countries, he highlighted the Commission’s priorities for employment, small businesses, access to information and communication technologies, and support to the medias. For the EU’s action beyond European borders, President Juncker announced a new Investment Plan for Africa as well as the creation of the new European Border and Coast Guard. Celebrations to Mark 10 Years of Wales for Africa First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones held an event in Cardiff to celebrate a decade of Wales’ partnership with Africa. The event brought together people who have given their time, resources and expertise to improve the lives of people in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as people from Africa who have directly benefitted from the programme. At the event the First Minister launched a report illustrating the positive impact the Wales for Africa programme has made to thousands of people across Wales and Africa. International Health Strategy Consultation The purpose of this consultation is to gain an insight into people’s values, opinions, experiences and ideas to inform the development of an international health strategy for Public Health Wales. Public Health Wales has a strong track record of international engagement and collaboration which is reflected in its Strategic Plan (IMTP). A new strategy for international health will allow it to consolidate its work and formulate and plan how it moves forward. Cwm Taf International Health Celebration Week During the week of 26th September, the staff at Cwm Taf University Health Board were talking about healthcare projects abroad more than ever before. A series of events were organised to showcase and celebrate the fantastic work that the staff have been involved in, as well as raising the profile of the IHCC’s Charter for International Health Partnerships and what it means for the health board. Health Enhancing Physical Activity Malcolm Ward and Ben Gray from the Policy, Research and International Development Directorate, Public Health Wales recently attended the Health Enhancing Physical Activity (HEPA) Network Europe 2016 conference in Belfast. The annual conference brought together leading academics, researchers and practitioners who are working on the physical activity and public health agenda. The conference provided the ideal platform to share examples of best practice and emerging research, enabling some of this knowledge to be brought back to Wales and provided an opportunity for discussions around potential research opportunities and collaborations between Wales and Europe. In addition to learning from the rest of Europe, both Malcolm and Ben contributed to the overall conference programme. As the work group eader Malcolm jointly led a ‘Health Care Settings’ workshop along with the ‘Environment’ and ‘Active Ageing’ working groups where he presented a report on Physical Activity Promotion in Primary Care settings, based on a trawl of case studies from around Europe supplemented by a rapid literature search. Ben was invited as runner up in the Early Career Research Star award to present his conference paper entitled “Cardio respiratory fitness testing in male steelworkers; a useful addition to their annual workplace medicals?” in the Workplace breakout session. European Health Forum Gastein Mariana Dyakova and Lauren Ellis both participated in the 2016 European Health Forum Gastein Conference (EHFG). Mariana presented in the session ‘Urban environments and NCDs: Engaging multiple stakeholders and sustainable environments to nurture a life free from NCDs’. Whilst Lauren attended under a professional scholarship, and as well as blogging, sat on a panel discussion on Brexit highlighting the Welsh perspective. Go to the EHFG website to find out more.


Welsh Scientist Receives International Recognition Dr Lewis White, Lead Scientist at the Mycology Reference Laboratory has received international recognition for his workat the 26th European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease (ECCMID) in Amsterdam. Three papers by Dr Lewis White were in the Top 10 Diagnostic Mycology papers, having been selected from an international pool by independent peer review. At the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Microbe conference in Boston, Lewis had another paper in the Top 10 Clinical Mycology papers. Again selected by independent peer review of the literature. Professor Rosemary Barnes (Consultant Microbiologist, Public Health Wales Microbiology Cardiff and Emeritus Professor of Medical Microbiology, Cardiff University) said: “To have three papers in the top 10 Diagnostic Mycology papers and a paper in the top 10 Clinical Mycology papers at two of the most prestigious medical conference is a fantastic achievement for Lewis.
