Give us back the Sick Kids! By Phyllis Stephen In what is regarded as a big test of the new Community Empowerment legislation, the Marchmont and Sci‐ ennes Development Trust (MSDT) is leading a bid for one of the country's most famous hospitals. People living next to the Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh have submit‐ ted an application to the Scottish Government to be given irst refusal on the four-acre site being sold by NHS Lothian.
MSDT spokesman, Nathan BowerBir, said: "his is a signiicant test of the Scottish Government's ambi‐ tious plans to give the 'right to buy' enjoyed by rural communities to those living in towns and cities. "he hospital is dearly held by peo‐ ple both locally and across Scotland. Whilst we're sad to see it move, this is a dream opportunity to bring this historic site under community con‐ trol and put it to the beneit of all of us - not just the well off. "he people of this community are driving this idea and it is clear they want more than what we have seen at other city centre sites sold off, where developers cram in as many expensive lats as they can and fence off any green space from public ac‐ cess. "his is a opportunity for ministers to show that these laws are not to‐ ken gestures, but in fact are signii‐ cant acts of reform that truly em‐ power local communities. "People living here see the great po‐ tential of preserving the Sick Kids' heritage as well as revitalising our local area. "We hope the Scottish Government
