I was reading a Q&A on protein and protein blends but it didn’t explain the differences between the proteins. Is one type better than another?

A

Yes and no. All dietary protein helps stimulate muscle growth by providing essential amino acids for the synthesis of new muscle tissue after exercise. But every protein has unique features that make the timing of its consumption a factor for deciding which single source or blend you should use at a specific time. Here’s what you need to know.

n Whey protein is a dairy protein

and the most popular supplemental protein. Whey is often used in the morning and after exercise because it digests rapidly for fast absorption. Whey also contains a high amount of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), most importantly leucine, which is necessary for muscle protein synthesis.

WHEY, CASEIN AND SOY: A PROTEIN DREAM TEAM

n Soy protein is a unique and functional plant protein that’s digested and absorbed at an intermediate rate in comparison to whey or casein proteins. Many consumers use this during the day between meals and immediately after a workout. As a result, soy protein extends the supply of amino acids to muscles to continue synthesis after whey is absorbed. Soy protein is a great source of arginine and glutamine, two amino acids that play an important role in muscle building. In fact, soy is also higher in arginine and glutamine than whey protein by 300% and 30%, respectively. These specific amino acids have numerous benefits on the body: Arginine increases vasodilation and nitric oxide in the blood, and glutamine is important for muscle recovery, immune function and many other actions. And both arginine and glutamine initiate natural signals for growth-hormone release. n Casein protein is another dairy protein, but unlike whey, it has a very slow absorption rate. Many consumers take casein in the evening or prior to

THE EUROPA DIFFERENCE

Arnold for decades in various roles, and has emceed the arm-wrestling championships for 19 years. He also leads an MMA workshop, and has a history of inviting some of the sports and entertainment industry’s top stars to the ASF to meet the fans. “The impact of Europa has been felt for years at the Arnold,” says Hackley. “Now, they’ve taken it to another level. Other title sponsors have not had the same cache. A lot of smaller and newer companies would not have invested without Europa’s influence.” Hackley is quick to credit Europa CEO and cofounder Eric Hillman. “He’s one of the best guys in the business,” says Hackley, who is a well-known trainer in the Washington D.C. area. “He’s very generous and separates the hype from the truth. Because of him, Europa opens more doors at the ASF because you feel good about doing business with Eric.”

A GLOBAL JUGGERNAUT

The new partnership of Europa and the ASF coincides with the new globalization of the Arnold brand. Lorimer says that after years of pressure to take the ASF overseas, they finally found the formula to make it portable to different cultures, starting with Europe. “We’ll have our third Arnold in Madrid this year, our second in Rio de Janeiro, and we’re in the advanced stages of negotiating with China in

The 2014 ASF takes place the weekend of February 27–March 2, and Lorimer is still at the helm. “This is going to be our biggest year ever with some great new events,” said Lorimer, whose enthusiasm for the days-long fitness extravaganza also grows annually. “We’re exceeding what we had last year and the response has been very encouraging. We expect people from well over 80 nations to show up for our competitions.” Six new events are scheduled for 2014, and Lorimer cites the growing popularity of the men’s 212-lb bodybuilding division for helping keep the physique contests a popular attraction on Friday and Saturday nights. Lorimer is quick to credit new presenting sponsor Europa Sports Products for creating an unprecedented rush for tickets and booth space. “The expansion this year is attributable to the new impetus from our partnership with Europa,” he says. “Europa has provided an excellent partnership with us. The demand for expo booths this year has exceeded anything we’ve ever had. We’ll have more than 100 additional booths, for a total of 831.” This sentiment is echoed by a familiar face at the ASF: promoter and martial arts expert Fairfax Hackley. Hackley has been involved in the

Six competitions are new to the ASF in 2014. Here’s a quick rundown: n Amateur Scottish Highland Games: In 2013, the professional version of this competition debuted at the Arnold. Now, kilted up-and-comers get their shot to throw stones and toss cabers in Columbus. n Arnold Classic 212 (lb): The IFBB’s men’s bodybuilding lower-weight class makes its much-awaited debut at the Arnold. These guys may give up some size to their counterparts in the open division, but symmetry-wise they’re the best of the best. At this level, the 212 field is always deep, talented and full of fan favorites. n Swimming Championships: This master’s-level meet, to be held at a YMCA in nearby Delaware, Ohio, will include 18 different swim events in the span of one afternoon (March 1). And it’s for a great cause, as all proceeds and donations from the meet will go toward funding Huntington’s disease research. n Tennis Championships: This United States Tennis Association (USTA) youth event will feature more than 300 juniors playing at the Scarborough East Tennis & Fitness Center in Columbus. In addition, the USTA will be holding tennis demonstrations and providing open play for youngsters at the Greater Columbus Convention Center February 28 through March 2. n Wrestling Championships: This youth event will be held at the Jerome Schottenstein Center, a state-of–the-art multiuse arena that’s home to the Ohio State University Buckeyes basketball team. n Pole Fitness National Championship: Strength will be on display in spades in the form of powerlifting and Strongman. But the sport of pole fitness—where athletes perform gravity-defying acts on a vertical pole as competitors in the Pole Championship Series (PCS)—is every bit as impressive in terms of pure functional strength. And yes, some of the pole acrobatics may look familiar to the gentlemen in the audience, but please, no tipping. “We think our fans will really enjoy pole fitness,” says Lorimer. “It’s a sport that’s widely popular in Europe, and we look forward to introducing it in 2014.”

2015,” he says. “We anticipate an ASF in Melbourne 2016, and then in South Africa shortly after that.” The something-for-everyone reputation of the ASF is a key draw for international audiences, proven every year at the original fitness weekend in Columbus. “We had no way of foreseeing 80 nations coming here every year,” admits Lorimer. “We give expression to the widest range of sports enthusiast

of almost every culture.” With plans to hold an ASF on six continents, only Antarctica remains. “I’m looking for a volunteer to get that one going,” jokes Lorimer. Don’t count it out. Penguin tossing, anyone? For more information on the Arnold Sports Festival, go to arnoldsportsfestival.com.

ARNOLD SHARES HIS NUTRITION SECRETS

After years of resisting calls to create an exclusive line of sports-nutrition products, Arnold Schwarzenegger finally decided to make it happen. Finding an ideal partner in MusclePharm, Arnold announced the launch of The Arnold Schwarzenegger Series of sports supplements. They’re already flying off the shelves of supplement stores and creating a buzz worthy of the product line’s namesake. Say “hasta la vista” to your old, underperforming body. Here’s what to look for. Iron Pump utilizes “super nitric oxide” thanks to ION-3 nitrate technology, and is the world’s first molecularly modified arginine. Arginine nitrate is a fusion of the amino acid arginine and nitric acid, which increases blood flow to enhance distribution of nutrients to amplify athletic performance, and support improved strength, recovery and muscle mass. Arginine creates nitric oxide to support vascularity and strength while the highly absorbable nitrate leaves you ready to attack your workout with explosive energy and mind-blowing pumps. Iron Mass is a revolutionary new weight gainer that utilizes a five-stage mass-delivery system, comprised of advanced muscle-plasma-protein technology—which is a combination of hydrolyzed beef protein and lactoferrin protein—an elite complex-carbohydrate matrix and high-performance healthy fats (EFAs and MCTs). The end result is a cutting-edge mass gainer featuring performance ingredients and a balanced digestive blend. Plus, Iron Mass is low in sugar and tastes delicious. Iron Cre3 is a cutting-edge creatine breakthrough featuring ION-3 nitrate technology. With an effective dose that’s one-tenth the size of a standard dose of creatine monohydrate, Iron Cre3 allows you to add strength and build muscle without loading or bloating. This supercreatine nitrate product also contains taurine, coconut water powder and glutamine to support hydration and recovery. This impressive combination promotes intense, longer-lasting workouts, allowing you to smash through training plateaus. Iron Cuts is a three-in-one fat-metabolizing and cutting formula that delivers a harder, dryer and leaner look. The combination of ingredients in Iron Cuts stimulates the fat-burning process while supporting a lean-muscle-building state to create a ripped appearance. Its precise ratios of active ingredients supports optimal levels of testosterone, estrogen and cortisol, allowing users to sculpt the body they’ve always wanted.
