‘Reduce food waste’ – DENR By Erlinda Olivia P. Tiu TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, June 7 (PIA) -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) region 8 appealed to the public to be practical in food preparation and consumption in line with the Environment Month celebration the whole month of June. Regional Executive Director Manolito Ragub said this is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 237, signed by then President Corazon C. Aquino in 1988 declaring the observance of Philippine Environment Month in June of each year. The theme for this year is: “Think. Eat. Save.” adapting the theme of the United Nations (UN) World Environment Day last June 5, Ragub said. The theme underscores the campaign to reduce food waste and food loss as food wastage has consequences on hunger and poverty, nutrition, health, income generation and economic growth. It also draws attention both to the issue and to the fact that high volumes of perfectly edible produce are never making it from the farm to the fork.

“The theme encourages all to become more aware of the environmental impact of the food choices we make and empowers us to make informed decisions,” Ragub said. To highlight the month-long celebration, DENR-8 is set to initiate activities geared not only towards increasing public awareness but also to sound a call to action aimed at sensitizing the various sectors from vendors, consumers to farmers on the importance of reducing food wastage from the various levels of the distribution chain. Studies conducted by UN show that at least a third of everything people grow on this planet is lost between the field and the consumer. This is a big issue considering the enormous waste of inputs to produce food that is never eaten, Ragub said. “Each one of us can do something about this,” Ragub said as he called on people in the region to make practical actions whether in their homes, in their farms, in the workplace, in the market or in the supermarket, in a canteen, in a hotel or anywhere else where food is prepared and consumed. CEBU CITY (PIA) -- The no smoking policy in government offices is still in full force. This, as the Civil Service Commission (CSC), the central human resource institution of the country, and the Department of Health (DOH) jointly issued a memorandum to effectively implement said policy. There are now two ways that both agencies can monitor the compliance with the “No Smoking Policy” among government offices, based on the program entitled, “Race Towards Tobacco Industry-Free Civil Service”. It includes the conduct of on-the-spot regular investigations or audits to assess the effectiveness of established enforcement and monitoring strategy and the other is the testing of standardized compliance monitoring systems in the field.

It also included the conduct of training and seminars to all state workers nationwide to fully achieve 100 percent smoke-free bureaucracy. Nearly 6 million people each year die from tobacco effects, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). More than 5 million are users and ex-users and more than 600,000 are non-smokers but are exposed to second-hand smoke. DOH and CSC encouraged all state workers nationwide to read the full version of JMC 2010-01 by logging on to http://www.smokefree.doh.gov.ph or via e-mail atdohsmokefreeph@gmail.com. (rmn/FCC/PIA7)
