PRESIDENT’S WELCOME The last few years have been a challenge, but welcome back! I’m honored to experience this year’s Connecticut Convention with you. Thank you to everyone—the sponsors, exhibitors, advertisers—and especially you, for helping to make this event possible. Please take advantage of all the convention has to offer you. This year’s event will focus on knowledge and networking.
DO YOU NEED CE?
Over the next two days, you will have three chances to attend CE-approved education courses. Cathy Trischan, CPCU, CIC, CRM, AU, ARM, AAI, CRIS, MLIS, TRIP, will lead a morning and an afternoon class on Thursday, which will focus on commercial property coverages, and personal lines coverages, respectively. And on Friday, John Fear, CPIA, CISR, will instruct a course on how to avoid errors-and-omissions claims either from what you say—or what you write—to clients. If you’ve been wondering about the latest offerings in InsurTech, or the newest insurance products and services, you are in luck. During this convention, there will be dedicated time for demonstrations from several InsurTech companies and from other companies that are exhibiting in the trade show.
NETWORKING
I hope you were able to take part in the CTYIP Happy Hour Wednesday night. Don’t forget to attend the networking luncheon Thursday afternoon and the networking reception later that night, which will feature the musical styling of DJ Michael Nigretti. More information about what is happening over the next two days—not just what I’ve mentioned here—can be found in this program book. Enjoy your Connecticut Convention, and thank you for being a part of this year’s event. Shannon Rabbett, CIC

EDUCATION SESSIONS
Thursday, March 24
8:30–11:30 a.m. Things Every Agent Should Understand About Commercial Property Coverage
CATHY TRISCHAN, CPCU, CIC, CRM, AU, ARM, AAI, CRIS, MLIS, TRIP
Cathy Trischan, CPCU, CIC, CRM, AU, ARM, AAI, CRIS, MLIS, TRIP Approved for 3 CTPC credits. (6000112177) Sponsored by: NLC Insurance Cos. There are certain aspects of commercial property that all insurance producers should understand before they write coverage for a client. What are the various types of valuation that can be used, and how does each work in a claim situation? How do policies handle debris removal, and why is this such an important issue? Why is ordinance or law something that should be addressed for every building—not just old ones? What does it mean for a property to be vacant, and what effect does vacancy have on coverage? Lastly, how do we address the common exposures of tenants who may be responsible for damage done to their rented space?
1:30–3:30 p.m. You’re Using Your House and Car for What?
Cathy Trischan, CPCU, CIC, CRM, AU, ARM, AAI, CRIS, MLIS, TRIP Approved for 2 CTPC credits. (115146) Sponsored by: Quincy Mutual Group Many of our insureds are allowed—or even are encouraged—to work remotely. Some of them are starting businesses in their homes or garages. Still others rent out their homes on Airbnb. How does the homeowners policy address this, and what should an insurance agent do? And, then there are the cars! What happens when your client’s 17-year-old child starts delivering pizza? With Uber on the scene, the use of personal vehicles for transportation of people and goods has become an even larger concern. Is there coverage available under the personal auto policy? As agents, how do we protect our clients? This course will take a big picture view and then move in close for a detailed view of these issues.

Words matter. Regardless of the way they are conveyed—in print, electronically or verbally exchanged in conversations—the messages agents convey as promises, may have errors-andomissions implications. This session will identify some common areas where these mistakes may appear and provide guidance on how to avoid possible E&O claims. This course has been approved for E&O loss-prevention credit by Utica National & Fireman’s Fund. Call the PIA E&O Department for details.
