LANAO DEL NORTE – To highlight the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) role in increasing competitiveness, creating a single market and production base, and promoting equitable economic development, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Region 10 held the ASEAN Barangay and Multi-Sectoral Fora on April 26 in Baroy and Tubod towns, Lanao del Norte. “Importante nga makigkuyog ta sa ASEAN kay ang pagtaas sa ekonomiya sa ASEAN, mao pud ang pagtaas sa ekonomiya sa Pilipinas (It is important that we go along with ASEAN because the increase of economy in ASEAN would also mean economic increase in the Philippines),” PIA Director General Harold Clavite said. Currently, ASEAN is named as the 7th largest economy in the world with

a collective income of $2.3 trillion. “We are expected to be the 4th largest economy in the world by 2030,” the director general shared. With the acceleration of the ASEAN economy, time will come when no one will be suffering from poverty because the primary goal of the ASEAN is to improve the

lives of its citizens. Aside from boosting the economy, Clavite stressed that with ASEAN, infrastructure connectivity for easier access to the neighboring countries, scholarship opportunities, and peace and security will be easily established. Way to economic development. To further emphasize the economic direction of the country years from now, Engr. Nestor Lisondra, chief economic development specialist of National Economic Development Authority (NEDA)-X, shared the 25-year vision of the Philippines through the Ambisyon Natin 2040, which could be a basis for unity among Filipinos, especially at this time. “It is envisioned to be an anchor for development planning across administrations, and a guide for engaging with international development partners,” Lisondra said. NEDA’s simplest summation of Ambisyon Natin 2040 is, “Matatag, maginhawa at panatag na buhay para sa lahat (Strongly rooted, comfortable life for all).” Hence, the vision for the country by 2040 is a prosperous, predominantly middle-class society where no one is poor. The people will enjoy long and healthy lives, are smart and innovative and will live in a hightrust society.

shared on the normalization track of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro saying that it is “the process whereby communities can achieve their desired quality of life, which includes the pursuit of sustainable livelihood and political participation within a peaceful deliberative society. Lisondra also stressed that normalization will simultaneously happen alongside the roadmap towards the creation of the Bangsamoro and it aims to ensure human security in the Bangsamoro. To realize such goal, the Task Force for Decommissioned Combatants and their Communities (TFDCC) held several activities like the Values

Transformation Training, remedial literary classes under the Department of Education and skills training through the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). Various socioeconomic programs for the decommissioned combatants and their communities were also provided such as the distribution of farming and fishery assistance by the Department of Agriculture (DA), installation of water systems, facilitation of delayed birth registration of decommissioned combatants through the Philippine Statistics Authority, and conduct of Alternative Learning System (ALS). With all the efforts of the government to achieve peace, Lisondra urged everyone to own the peace process as working for peace is always a joint effort between the government and the people. The ASEAN community envisions a peaceful, stable and resilient community with enhanced capacity to respond effectively to challenges by 2025. Hence, the PIA along with its partner agencies step up the ASEAN awareness to educate community members on the role of the international community, its relevance and potential benefits to the people. intervention to combat malnutrition in the country. Dr. Grace Sicat of DOH-10 said that children who are malnourished are either underweight or overweight and they easily get sick.

16-30 April 2017 Reports issued by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) showed that in region 10 the prevalence of underweight and severely underweight from zero to 71 months old has decreased from 6.66 to 5.72 beginning 2013 to 2015. Meanwhile, overweight has also decreased from 1.17 to 0.80 from 2013-2015. Although the statistics is showing a downtrend, the annual weight/ height/length taking of NNC aims to identify malnourished children in the community to be given appropriate intervention. Sicat further said inadequate dietary intake, household food insecurity, unhealthy household environment and poor health services, disease and inadequate care could lead to maternal and child undernutrition and even death.

Anti-rabies campaign continues, thousands vaccinated CAPITOL COMPOUND, Misamis Oriental – The number of vaccinated dogs in Misamis Oriental reaches 13,671 as the mass anti-rabies campaign of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) since February 2017 continues.

Dr. Benjamin Resma said the program is part of Governor Bambi Emano’s directives to really ensure that the residents of the province are free from rabies or any killer viruses. In Opol town, there were at least 1,815 dogs vaccinated; 1,800 in Balingasag; 302 in Binuangan; 216 in Lugait, and hundreds others in the rest of the municipalities and two cities in Misamis Oriental. Aside from the vaccination, the PVO also conducted and continuously conducting education campaign in several schools in the province particularly to the Grades

5 and 6 students on responsible pet ownership and the what-to-dos when bitten by dogs. According to Janesse Bernas, Nurse II of the Provincial Health Office (PHO), dog bite victims should be immediately rushed to the nearest Animal Bite Centers or in any hospitals for treatment. She clarified that the anti-rabies vaccine is free at public hospitals. Bernas added that pet owners should bear in mind that they have big responsibility over their pets that will not harm others. One of the signs that pets have high risk of rabies is their change of attitude towards their owners; less food and water appetite and very aggressive. Pets must drink plenty of water especially this hot season to avoid unusual behavior towards people. (PIO)

99 families shift from disposable to cloth nappies CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – To show unity by cloth and strengthen the campaign for Earth Day, 99 mothers and families joined the Great Cloth Diaper Change hosted by the Modern Nanays of Mindanao (MNM) on April 22 in Cagayan de Oro City.

15

At exactly 11:00 a.m., participants worldwide simultaneously changed the nappies of their babies to cloth diapers signifying their support to save the earth from accumulating too much garbage from disposables. This year’s theme, “Change Starts Here,” stresses the change that occurs when a local business gains one new customer particularly the local sellers of cloth diapers and other related products, when a parent make one new friend with a common interest on using earth-friendly products, and when the community sees a united by cloth families working create a cultural shift towards cloth diapering and all its benefits. “Kung naa’y harm ang isa ka formula milk, naa pu’y harm ang isa kabuok disposable diaper (If

one formula milk causes harm, one disposable diaper also has a harmful effect),” Meg Gabe of MNM said. Gabe, who shared on traveling with infant and cloth diapers, said that a lot of mothers or primary caregivers do not use or exclusively patronize cloth diapers because they’re bulky, need a lot of effort, hassle and smelly. “Kung smelly, iputos ra gud na ug wet bag. Smelly? Dili siya issue, labhan (If the cloth diapers are smelly, just use a wet bag. Smelly? This is not an issue; wash them),” Gabe stressed. Furthermore, Jeanette Un, owner of Earth Baby, said that cloth diapers should be patronized since disposable diapers are dangerous, composed of harmful chemicals, have environment impacts and often cause diaper rash. “Di ba mas maayo nga tela kaysa plastik ang suoton ni baby (Isn’t it better to let our baby wear products with cloth material than plastic, right)? If we can give them (babies) a better option, why not?” Un said. She also challenged the families

16-30 April 2017

to do what they can to lessen the existence of the carbon culprit. “If we choose to change from disposable to cloth, let me tell you, the effect is big,” Un added. Also, in using disposable diapers, each baby contributes about 2,000 pounds of garbage that decompose for 250-500 years. As for the rash, Un stressed that disposable diapers are so absorbent and they designed to do that, and because they are made of plastic, air could not circulate well keeping the baby in high temperature. Hence, babies experience prolonged exposure to a hot, dirty environment and have

a higher risk to get a diaper rash. “Kung dedicated kay ta, kung love kay nato ang cloth diapers, kung gusto nato ipakita nga modern nanay ko, let’s be an example to everyone. I-promote ang cloth diapers (If we are very dedicated, if we really love cloth diapers, if you want to show that you are a modern mother, let’s be an example to everyone. Promote the use of cloth diapers),” Gabe said. To further convince families to exclusively use cloth diapers, several talks and discussions were provided by the City Social Welfare and Development Office and solid waste management experts.(RTP/PIA10)
