This year’s festival is even more special as the City kicks-off for the 25th year of the Christmas Symbols festival and the 50th anniversary of Tangub’s cityhood in 2017. What started to be a simple gathering of the locals in the Tangub City plaza 25 years ago with the first couple Mayor Philip T. Tan and Dr. Jennifer Tan has transformed simple community into a promising world class Christmas destination. For the past 25 years, millions have witnessed how Tangub give all

in celebrating Christmas. From what started as single Christmas tree to amuse a young wife who have just recently relocated to Tangub, the Christmas Symbol festival has grown into the biggest single attraction in Northern Mindanao during the Yuletide season. In his opening remarks and christmas message, mayor Philip Tan said this is the longest running festival in our country and this is the dedication of our people in Tangub to celebrate Christmas, the best way we


can. In her message, Regional Director of Tourism Marie Elaine S. Unchuan says “this festival is a source of pride not only for our Region but for the whole country.� She added, this is not only a celebration of Christmas but the celebration of the success of Tangub, its leader and the people who throughout the years have made Tangub City, the model of tourism development it is today.

This is one of the Crown Jewels of Tangub City which is the Christmas Symbol Festival. DOT Assistant Secretary for Media Relations Events Frederick Alegre said during the opening of Christmas festival 2017 that his festival celebration allows us to express our gratitude to the Almighty God and a channel for us to be reminded the value of sharing, caring and loving our brothers and sisters especially this Yuletide season.

Asec. Alegre added, this day is very significant as the City is also celebrating its 25th years as one of the major festivals in the country listed in our yearly calendar of events and constantly bringing honor and prestige to the region and the Department of tourism as well.

This region is very much fortunate to have this event here in Tangub City every December, because it has already became part of a family tradition to spend their time here to enjoy Christmas in a more interesting and enjoyable way unique to the City, says Asec Alegre.

NFA assures ample rice supply in Bukidnon despite typhoon Vinta’s onslaught MALAYBALAY CITY – The National Food Authority (NFA) here assured the public that there is ample supply of commercial rice and affordable government rice in all public markets.

NFA Bukidnon information officer Maria Socorro Mellomida said there is more than enough supply of NFA rice, while dispelling fears that there is rice shortage due to the effects of Typhoon Vinta that hit Bukidnon this Christmas. She suggested that local residents should patronize government rice sold at only P27 per kilo in selected public

market stalls, instead of buying highpriced commercial rice. At present, market retail price of commercial rice in the province ranged from P36 to P45 per kilo while the special well-milled rice went up from P43 to P45 per kilo. “The price increase will only be temporary because of the nature of the season. NFA, however, is prepared with

CDO university, insurance coop ink partnership to offer executive education program CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan and Climbs Life and General Insurance Cooperative joined forces to design the modules for an executive education program to respond to the training needs of coop leaders. In the signing of the memorandum of agreement held at The VIP Hotel, the two parties agreed that the executive education program will be conducted by Xavier Ateneo’s School of Business and Management through the Climbs Institute of Financial Literacy. “Xavier is very pleased that we have entered into this partnership with the Climbs. One of the key principles of the Jesuit mission is lifelong education and part of it is offering executive education programs,” said Xavier Ateneo president Fr Roberto “Bobby” C Yap SJ. “We are happy that we are

doing this with the Climbs. ... Xavier believes in the values of cooperatives . ‘MAD’ millennials spark volunteerism in NorMin in light of Marawi crisis ILIGAN CITY – As the terrorism crisis in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur was near to end a month ago, and the city comes to terms with the massive devastation caused by the Maute terrorist group, the youth in Northern Mindanao converged to learn how to leverage volunteerism to be of help in rebuilding the war torn city and the lives of its displaced people.

Some 300 youth leaders and college students from the region’s different universities came together at the “MAD Talks: Nagmahal, Nasaktan, Nagvolunteer” forum held at the Doña Juana Actub Lluch Memorial Central School in Iligan City. The forum was spearheaded by the non-government group and a

2016 TAYO (Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations) awardee I am Making A Difference, Inc. (I am MAD) composed of millennials committed to spread the gospel of active volunteerism and selflessness through its collective passion and nationwide advocacy to mobilize local youth. The MAD Talks forum presented

16-31 December 2017 resource speakers and successful volunteers who shared their insights and personal life experiences to inspire the Mindanaoan youth to continue to make a difference through their respective organizations and not to get tired of helping others despite challenges. “It is high-time to focus on the youth in this region in light of the Marawi siege. They need motivation and inspiration for them to be able to accomplish what needs to be done in the area of volunteerism. We hope that with MAD Talks, our youth leaders in the country will be moved by real-life results brought about by volunteerism that will promote more participation, development and peace,” said I am MAD co-founder Christian Marx Rivero, a youth leader from a farflung community in Sibuyan Island, Romblon. Wino Dela Cruz, one of the I am MAD volunteers who spoke at the forum, said, “There may be war, there may be chaos and other forms of distresses in our lives but we can always turn our pain into purpose, our brokenness into blessing. Let us always choose to love no matter what. Love yourself and​​offer the love that you have to others and create a community of shared compassion, charity, and care. Experience that rare joy and a renewed love of life through volunteerism.”​ After the series of inspirational talks, the attendees lighted candles and

formed the letters M.A.D. symbolizing their commitment to be like candles, to give light and be the light to the many especially during dark times. I am MAD vows to continuously monitor and coordinate the youth leaders’ progress in the region. MAD Talks was just one of the activities in three-day outreach program dubbed I am MAD Camp. The first part of the program engaged select students at the host school in various sets of educational, entertaining and team-building activities. All these are aligned with the organization’s four key advocacies anchored on the Department of Education’s core values—love of God (Maka-Diyos), love for others (Makatao), love of environment (Makakalikasan), and love of country (Makabayan), all of which are integrated as well in “The Ten I am MAD Commitments.” Learner-participants also received the “Bag of Dreams” packs with basic school supplies. I am MAD was able to donate as well school supplies and snacks for evacuees from Marawi who are currently adopted as students at the school. The donation was made possible through the school principal Dr. Enerio E. Ebisa, who also served as the MAD builder-coordinator for the Iligan camp. ASEAN info session with RAGCOM NorthMin held in CDO CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – An Information Session (Info Session) with the Regional Association of Government Communicators (RAGCOM) in Northern Mindanao was among the final highlights of ASEAN-info related activities set by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) region 10 this year. Held on 18 December 2017 at N Hotel Cagayan de Oro City, Elaine Ratunil, ASEAN focal person shared highlights of ASEAN achievements this year. The Philippines as one of ASEANs founding fathers has been the chair of this year’s ASEAN’s 50th anniversary with the theme “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World.” Among the important highlights of this year’s ASEAN summit is the cooperation on the six thematic priorities. First is People oriented and people centered ASEAN, where a consensus was signed to better promote and protect the rights of

migrant workers which will provide them better social protection, easier access to justice and health services and treated more humanely and fairly. In terms of peace and stability in the region, ASEAN will counter and eradicate violent extremism and forge maritime security and cooperation. With the completion of code of conduct in the south china sea, between ASEAN and China, the two sides will start negotiation which will help effectively to resolve the tensions and potential conflicts in the south china sea. Further, ASEAN and China have

also agreed to cooperate to protect coastal and marine environment in the south china sea. President Duterte confers with local officials as TS Vinta hits LanaoNorte

TUBOD, Lanao del Norte – The wrath of Tropical Storm Vinta has devastated the province of Lanao del Norte.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte took time to be with provincial officials and town mayors as well, in the aftermath of the severe landfall of TS Vinta affecting 12 out of 22 municipalities of Lanao del Norte. President Duterte in his opening statement expressed his condolences to those who died and to the families who suffered of losing their love ones due to ravaging Storm Vinta. The President, along with some of the cabinet members, had a briefing with members of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council

(NDRRMC) in a presentation- the scenario of the disaster, by the Office of the Civil Defence-Region X, at the function room, Mindanao Civic Center Hotel, Tubod, Lanao del Norte, in the afternoon of 27th December. As of December 26, 2017, an estimated 8,607 families were displaced with corresponding 36,998 individuals. A total of 95 persons were verified dead, 41 are missing and 14 are injured. As validated by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Lanao del Norte, a total of 1,478

houses were damaged, 796 of which are totally damaged. Furthermore, Governor Imelda Q. Dimaporo, being the PDRRM Committee chairperson, has reported five of the 12 municipalities hardly hit, namely Salvador, Tubod, Munai, Sapad and Kapatagan. An estimated P288.7 million of agricultural damages were validated mostly affecting rice, corn, high value crops, and livestock. This magnitude of damage translate to 11,812 farmers left without livelihood. While damaged infrastructure is valued at P168.38 million, the governor added. Specifically, damage to the provincial roads is estimated at P93 million, damage to hanging and street bridges is valued at P85 million. Other destroyed infrastructure include farmto-market roads, access roads, riprap

protection, lined canals, barangay halls, post-harvest structures, and commercial buildings. Knowing the impact of Typhoon Vinta in these areas, the President said it needs a huge appropriation of funds, for the retrieval of all the losses and damages done. “The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), are the twomost sought government agencies that could provide immediate assistance in time like this,� said President Duterte. Other agencies include Department of Agriculture, the Department of Health, Department of Trade and Industry, and our men and women in uniform who take care of the safety especially in transporting those affected families to a safer area.

200 OSY in Bukidnon qualifies JobStart Philippines program MANOLO FORTICH, Bukidnon – Some 210 out of school youth applicants from the province of Bukidnon were accepted to join the next batch of JobStart Philippines program.

JobStart Philippines program is an employment facilitation initiative of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) with funding support from the Government of Canada and technical assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The program seeks to assist young and unemployed Filipinos start their careers and find meaningful employment. Department of Labor and Employment Bukidnon (DOLEBukidnon) Chief Raul L. Valmores explained further that it mainly aims to enhance the knowledge and skills acquired by jobseekers in formal education or technical training in order

for them to become more responsive to the demands of the labor market. It will also help the youth develop their life skills, including those relevant to the values of professionalism and work appreciation, and provide trainees with conducive and safe work environment or venue where they can apply relevant theories and proper work ethics. Likewise, this program is designed to improve the capacity of Public Employment and Services Office (PESOs) in providing full-cycle employment facilitation services. The program covers those at-risk youth – out of school, unemployed, and poor. Qualifications must be a Filipino citizen, 18-24 years old,

at least high school level, should currently not in employment, not in education nor training, and, has no or less than one year work experience. The program has three phases, first is the Life Skills Training (LST), second is the Technical Training, and last is the Internship. Valmores further shared that it was a one-stop process since not only involved the registration process in filling-up of the Public Employment Information System (PEIS) Form which will be encoded on the database but also provided orientation about the program, thereafter. Those who were not able to qualify were endorsed to other employment facilitation programs of the PESO.

Meanwhile, the qualified youth were interviewed by DOLE-10, PESO, and JobStart Project Coordinators. Some 210 applicants were accepted from the 250 registrants. JobStart Program applicant Emerlyn U. Acosta and the vice-chairman of the committee reported that five out of six target activities were implemented for the year. Under the agreement, the PhilHealth accredited hospital shall not impose a deposit requirement for eligible PhilHealth members and their dependents that come to the facility for confinement or admission. This would apply to both emergency and non-emergency cases. It also allows admission or confinement of all eligible PhilHealth members without any deposit requirement in all types of room accommodation. “We are hopeful that this will encourage other private hospitals and facilities to follow suit and prioritize the treatment of patients rather than compromising their health and safety due to financial constraints”, RVP Alonto stressed. PhilHealth 10 intends to intensify and expand its campaign for the No Hospital Deposit Policy to all Private Health Care Institutions in 2018.(PhilHealth 10)
