Peligrino, 21-year old triathlete from Gingoog City, while Zarah Love A. Palanca, Cabadbaran City, 39-year old grabbed the third spot with a 2:06:10 race time. Mambajao Local Government Unit Sports Coordinator Gilbert Grado said the attendance of triathletes have doubled this year. “We elevated from last year’s race, now it’s no longer relay, but rather solo for the athletes who can compete for the three disciplines and qualify as a triathlete,” he said. Grado highlighted that the second Mt. Hibok-hibok triathlon is quite unique in the sense that its swimming leg is done in a channel and not in the shorelines. It’s a water entry for the sprint distance in the middle of
White Island going to the shore, and full distance stretch from the White Island to the shore for the standard distance race. “It’s a call for triathletes to train harder for open sea challenge, considering the current, wind and wave factors,” Grado said. The event was spearheaded by Promote Camiguin, a private group organized with the intent to develop and promote sports in Camiguin, in partnership with the local government of Mambajao and the Camiguin provincial government. Meanwhile, seeing the success gained and pushing further the development of sports tourism in the island-province, the Mt. Hibok-hibok Triathlon is planned to be hold twice next year, summer and in time for the Lanzones Festival in October. It will be off-road this time for the bikes and trails for the run.
