Two MSU-IIT students remain captive, four others released ILIGAN CITY – Two MSU-IIT students who were abducted Saturday night, June 4, 2016, remain in captivity while their four companions, according to unverified reports, were allegedly released at dawn, June 6. Authorities identified the remaining students as Berzon Paeste (4th year AB History) from Zamboanga del Sur and Cid Rick Jamias (5th year BS Electronics and Communication) from Tacurong City. Those allegedly released (and currently in hiding) were identified as Juhary Gubat, 1st year General Education student; Kevin Limpin, an IIT alumnus; Hannah Yurong, a former IIT student who dropped out; and Eloisa Lacson, a non-IIT student. Paeste and Jamias were allegedly hanging out with Gubat, Limpin, Yurong, and Lacson at the Caltex Gas Station in Tibanga, Iligan city on the

evening of June 4. Upon learning of the alleged disappearance and possible abduction of the group, the MSU-IIT Office of Publication and Information (OPI) alerted the MSU-IIT Security Chief Eduardito “Ditto” Maruhom and lawyer Alex Cabornay, head agent of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Regional Office in Cagayan de Oro City, both members of the Iligan City Citizens Crime Watch. In turn, Maruhom alerted the 2nd Mechanized Brigade Intelligence Group of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine National Police (PNP) and NBI Iligan office

about the alleged disappearance of the students. In Maruhom’s investigation, the group of students left the Caltex Gas Station premises late Saturday evening in a white vehicle with plate no. KGJ 661. The vehicle was allegedly driven by a man described only as the cousin of Gubat. The group drove westward, towards the next town, Linamon, Lanao del Norte, but reportedly stopped at a gas station where Gubat allegedly got off to make a call. A few minutes after they continued on the road, their vehicle was stopped by armed men in Tominobo, Iligan City. The students were said to have been blindfolded and brought to an unknown, uphill and muddy area where they were separately interviewed about their parents’ jobs. Later, on Monday dawn, unverified reports said four were released: Gubat, Limpin,

Yurong, and Lacson. All are said to be in hiding for fear of their lives. Maruhom said that the NBI has traced a phone call from a cell phone to Bacolod, Lanao del Norte and as of this writing, military intelligence reportedly said that the abducted students were brought to Munai, Lanao del Norte. Bacolod town is three towns west of Iligan City, approximately 30 kilometers away while Munai town is about 10 minutes away going inland from Bacolod town. NBI, PNP and AFP are now following various leads for the safe return of the MSU-IIT students. Chancellor Sukarno D. Tanggol, for his part, said the matter is still being investigated and the MSU-IIT is “doing its best for the safety of the kids.” (MSU-IIT Office of Publication & Information (OPI/PIA-10 LDN)

More local govt to undergo CCC training on climate change CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Climate Change Commission (CCC) is set to gather this week local government units (LGUs) and stakeholders most vulnerable to disasters caused by extreme weather conditions to train them in handling adaptation, mitigation, and disaster risk reduction and management.

The Communities for Resilience or CORE Convergence Forum to be held on June 8 until 9 in Cagayan de Oro City will bring together LGUs around the Buayan-Malungon, Cagayan de Oro, Davao and Tagoloan River Basins, which are part of the 18 major river basins and communities covered by CORE. CORE river basins and communities, which are considered high risk areas, have been identified by experts as pilot areas and models for the convergence of climate change adaptation, mitigation, and disaster risk reduction and management programs of the government. The forum, which is the second of the series to be conducted across the country by CCC, aims to increase competencies of LGUs on risk information database, competency development on risk management, mitigation, mainstreaming of climate change and disaster risk reduction in local planning and knowledge management. The first convergence forum in Davao City last March was attended by 18 LGUs. “The convergence forum’s main strategy is the development of capacities of key national and local stakeholders, particularly the latter who bear the brunt of the impacts of climate change and are expected to be at the forefront of the response actions,” Secretary Emmanuel M. De Guzman said. The Secretary added that

capacity gaps need to be immediately addressed if a vulnerable country like the Philippines is to be on track to sustainable development. “Innovation and generation of local solutions which are science-based will be utilized to address awareness and understanding gaps on climate change and disaster risk reduction. This will significantly contribute in reducing the country’s mortalities and economic losses from natural hazards and disaster risks,” he said. The CORE Convergence Forum will be conducted throughout the year to cover other major river basins across the country such as Pasig-Laguna, Pampanga, Agno, Abra, Cagayan, Agusan, Mindanao, Ilog-Hilabangan, Ranao (Agus), Bicol, Panay, Jalaur and Apayao-Abulug. The 18 Major River Basins are identified as key priority areas by the Cabinet Cluster for Adaptation and Mitigation. (Climate Change Commission)
