CDO urges continuous improvement as manifestation of freedom
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – During the celebration of the 118th Philippine Independence Day on June 12, in Cagayan de Oro, the city local government stressed that the community should sustain the gains that were achieved over the years as many lives and comforts were given up just to give a better future for the generation.
After the flag raising ceremony and executive wreath-laying, City Mayor Oscar Moreno said that in spite of the dominance of the colonizers, the Filipinos announced to the world that they are free; that they had the right to dream, aspire and attain their own destiny not dictated by any foreign influence. However, the mayor emphasized that vigilance is the price of freedom saying, “Without vigilance, we cannot sustain our freedom.” With this, Moreno reminded everyone to learn from the lessons of the past, both good and bad, and to continue with the good lessons and even improve on them. He also added that the local government units need the ingenuity, total commitment and sincerity of everyone in addressing the focus of the new administration – drugs and criminality. Even if the syndicates now are well-entrenched and abundant in resources, the mayor stressed that these people could not win the hearts
of the people, “the hearts of the people that want to be free, want to craft their own destiny.” Thus, the mayor wants freedom from criminality and drugs, and encourages every citizen to help meaningfully in achieving that. “We declare today our commitment for a better tomorrow and it will never end,” Moreno said as he urged everyone to possess the attitude of being better, work hard for a better tomorrow and quest for excellence. The city celebration commenced with the parade of the Philippine flag from the executive building of the City Hall, passing through different historical sites of the city and finally to the Rizal Monument. The raising of the Philippine flag with full military colors was led by the city mayor, Rep. Rolando Uy, MGen Benjamin Madrigal, Jr., 4th Infantry Division commander, and Philippine National Police Regional Director Lyndel A Dequistado.(RTP/PIA10)
