Photo book documenting Camiguin flora and fauna underway

MAMBAJAO, Camiguin – A collection of stunning variety of plant and animal species in Camiguin is underway following the on-going documentary spearheaded by the provincial environment and natural resources office (PENRO).


The environment office likewise commissioned the Central Mindanao University (CMU) to identify the data gathered based on the pictures and facts noted during the sampling. PENRO Chief of the Technical Services Division Roberto S. Rufino said the collection is done only inside the protected area by trained personnel. “We target to complete this

within the year and launch the photo book in time for the Mounts Timpoong Hibok-Hibok Asean Heritage Park (AHP) anniversary,” he said. The project intends to showcase the island’s rich biodiversity as it keeps up with the AHP standards which are basically anchored in ecotourism projects, protection, and conservation. (JCV/ PIA-10)

EMB showcases notable SWM projects in NorMin

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Northern Mindanao’s finest experts in solid waste management shared their innovations and notable strategies to various partners and members of the Northern Mindanao Ecology Center (NMEC) and the Cagayan de Oro River Basin and Adjacent Rivers Water Quality Management Area (CDOBAR-WQMA) Governing Board in Cagayan de Oro City on June 29. Practitioners from the academe, local government unit, and commercial establishment namely Xavier University, Gingoog City local government unit (LGU) and SWM consultant Engr. Sin del Jamorol graced the learning event which also highlighted the environment month culmination activities. In his opening message, Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environment and Management Bureau (DENR-

EMB) acting officer in-charge, lawyer Abbas I. Lao said the event seeks to capacitate the members, especially the local government units, highlighting that to date, only 37 percent of the LGUs nationwide have complied with the guidelines set by Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. The EMB, he said, has already filed its first 50 administrative cases for the non-compliant local governments at the Ombudsman, and two of these


cases are from Northern Mindanao. Regional SWM Chief Dovee Cherry Geollegue said only 10 LGUs in region 10 have established and

operated a Sanitary Landfill and 36 percent or 737 barangays have materials recovery facility. (JCV/PIA 10)

DTI, LPCC gear up for more activities to protect consumers ILIGAN CITY – Iligan City Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC) tackled during its second Quarter meeting calendar of activities for the period June to December 2016 in its mandate to protect the interest and welfare of the consumers. In order to achieve its mandate and sustainability, the city government has allocated an annual fund of P100,000 for the council to be taken from the appropriation of the City Mayor’s Office. This according to Joseph Benjie Teves, community relations officer, who attended the meeting representing the offices of City Mayor office and Administrator. With the budget allocation, activities include regular price monitoring not only in the poblacion area but to include barangays, operation timbangan in public markets and ‘talipapas (temporary market).’ Other activities include conduct of consumer education and advocacy seminars/briefings, and enforcement of different fair trade laws to protect

consumers from trade malpractices. Provincial Director Ruel B. Paclipan of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Lanao del Norte Provincial Office, said that all LPCC activities primarily focused to ensure the availability of basic and prime commodities at reasonable prices and protect consumers from illegal manipulations and similar situations.
