DOLE GIP, SPES beneficiaries join mangrove propagule bagging LOPEZ JAENA, Misamis Occidental – The eight Department of Labor and Employment-Government Internship Program (DOLE-GIP) and 46 Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) beneficiaries participated in the mangrove propagule bagging in Barangay Mansabay Bajo, Lopez Jaena Misamis Occidental. In line with the celebration of the Month of the Ocean (MOO) in May 2016, and with the theme: “Biodiversity for Food Security,” the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Lopez Jaena in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and other government agencies spearheaded various activities relative to the protection of coastal areas, highlighting the important role of Mangroves as natural barriers against storm surges during extreme weather events. Proclamation No. 57 issued in 1999 declared May as the Month of the Ocean. It mandates the DENR and the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to spearhead the observance of MOO and highlight the need to conserve and protect the country’s coastal and ocean resources. “The Department of Labor and Employment fervently supports this movement for a “green economy” by engaging and advocating programs that promote environmental protection and preservation”, said Leonardo

The department holds the principal role of providing support to business enterprises in developing and implementing environmental protection programs. This includes development/use of green technologies and industry practices and provision of green services. “Beside focusing on education and employment, we also encourage the youth to take part in community activities such as this. When they become engaged in the community, they develop skills and build meaningful positive relationships with other members of the community. More importantly, they are less likely to get involved in drugs, alcohol, and other vices”, he added.
