Core events for city fiesta

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The City Fiesta Committee has lined up several activities for the forthcoming fiesta celebration of Cagayan de Oro.


Councilor Jay R. Pascual, chair of the City Council committee on tourism, reported during the 5th regular session Monday presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy that the committee had already approved the core events for the annual celebration. These include the Higalaay Garden Show and Higalaay AgriFair, which was opened on August 2 at Duaw Kagay-an Park and Gaston Park. One of the main events for the celebration of city fiesta is the coronation night of Miss Cagayan de Oro 2016 which will be held at The Atrium, Limketkai Center. Other core events are the Mindanao Fashion Summit at Rotunda,

Limketkai Center, Kumbira at Atrium, Kahimunan Regional Trade Fair 2016 at SM, Cowboy Festival at P.N Roa, Upper Carmen, and the Higalaay Street Parade and Floats. Also included in the list of events is the Fluvial Procession from Macajalar Bay to Cagayan de Oro River-Duaw Kagay-an Park. There will also be a Centrio Bisperas Fireworks Display on August 27 at 8:00 p.m. at Duaw Kagay-an Park. PNVSCA, CHED call for entries to Volunteerism Story Writing contest CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Do you have a story that features the experiences and contributions of volunteers to sustainable development? The Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVCSA) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) invites you to join the Volunteerism Story Writing Contest with the theme “Volunteering for Sustainable Development.” The contest aims to engage the youth in discovering and narrating the diverse experiences of people and organizations that render volunteer services for community empowerment and sustainable development. It also seeks to highlight volunteerism as a strategy in the achievement of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in support to the Philippines’ commitment to the global development priorities. The contest is open to undergraduate college/university students who have completed or are

currently taking the National Service Training Program (NSTP). Each participant shall choose one Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) and write a feature article on an individual or group/organization whose volunteer work is aligned with the achievement of the chosen SDG. One winner will be selected in each region to help showcase the volunteering stories in different areas of the country. Regional winners will receive P3,000. Entry forms and the contest mechanics can be downloaded at PNVSCA’s website www.pnvsca.gov. ph and Facebook page www.facebook. com/innovatecooperateinspire or at CHED website www.ched.gov.ph. Marawi CPOC tackles security threats MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur – The local government of Marawi convened members of the City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) on August 3, to address the recent security threats in the city.


During the meeting, the council, headed by City Mayor Majul Gandamra, discussed prevailing security issues particularly on the campaign against illegal drugs and local terror threats. Police Inspector Parson Asadil, city chief of police, reported that 65 drug personalities were captured during police operations. Col. Roseller Murillo, commanding officer of the 103rd Infantry Brigade, gave updates on the joint military and police law enforcement operation in Butig, as well as, the interception of improvised explosive devices in the city last month. He said documents and videos were also recovered which can be used to run after those involved in the terror attack. To address security concerns, the council members resolved to increase police visibility in critical areas and

intensify checkpoint and chokepoint operations in strategic areas. They further raised the possibility of reviving the barangay peacekeeping action teams, establishment of a local hotline for faster response, and inclusion of major public schools in the patrol routes of the military. The council also recognized the importance of cooperation and teamwork among the different sectors in protecting the city. In attendance during the meeting were officers from the 103rd Infantry Brigade, Philippine National Police, and Bureau of Fire Protection, as well as, city councilors, city department heads, barangay chairmen, and representatives from the public education sector, media, and religious groups.
